Kayaking with Orca, or Killer Whales off Sooke, BC on Vancouver Island.

Theyre All Around Us! Who knew when I woke up on this Thursday morning that it was going to be an extraordinary day that would produce a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It was a beautiful afternoon with calm seas; so, Allan from West Coast Outdoor Adventure Rentals http://www.westcoastoutdoor.ca and I decided to take the Hobie kayaks for a spin. Heading out towards Secretary Island just off Sooke, BC in the Juan de Fuca Strait, we got word there was a large pod of Orcas close by. We were so excited to receive this news and at the prospect of seeing killer whales; we were immediately intrigued. As luck would have it, the whales were just as intrigued by us. We could see the whales were swimming near Otter Point, about a mile and a half from where we drifted and bobbed about like buoys in our kayaks. We could just make out the black specks of dorsal fins on the horizon. The killer whales were hugging the shoreline, so we were completely amazed at the events that would take place over the next 30 minutes. Even though we were in the open, usually turbulent, waters of the Juan de Fuca Strait, we were in a flood tide so paddling was smooth—effortless. We held our position and the whales got closer, and closer. The entire pod was heading our way. The pod got a little closer, then a lot closer. Then they were all around us! And under us! And beside us! A mother and her calf gave us an unbelievable experience; if I hadnt caught the scene on video, I would never have believed it. I can wholeheartedly say that this was one of the most stunning, thrilling (and scary!) events of my life. Mother and baby swam straight towards us, and dove directly in front of the bow of my kayak. I could see them both swimming under my kayak and then disappear into the depths. Not knowing where or when then would emerge, I sat in anticipation. And then, they surfaced directly in front of my kayak. Wow. Unbelievable! They were all around us. Dont believe me? Think Im exaggerating? This is no fishermans tall tale, and I have the video to prove it. Join me on my adventure and watch this astonishing recount. Dont forget to check out the official Discover Sooke Online website to learn more about Sooke businesses and our community www.discoversooke.com. http://www.discoversooke.com West Coast Outdoor Adventure Rentals is located at Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina http://www.sookeharbourresort.ca ***UPDATE*** We'd like like to let everyone know that we have been in contact with the DFO (Department of Fisheries and Oceans) as they had some concerns about this video. We assured them that our intentions that day were NOT to intentionally place ourselves in the middle of whales, but rather head out in hopes that we might witness them passing by from a safe distance. "L-POD" were spaced out about 1km in diameter, which placed us amongst them before we even knew it as they were close to shore and moving very quickly. We felt that we didn't have the ability to safely move out of the way nor did we have the time. They appeared around us as quickly as it started. There were fishing vessels and a whale watching boat near us, so we felt we were doing the proper thing by just staying where everyone else was. West Coast Outdoor Adventure Rentals does not rental kayaks for the Strait of Juan de Fuca and are only used in the Sooke Harbour and Basin. These were not rented, we were on our own time. Resident Orca, which these are, are often around the summer months. That's not to say they don't frequent the waters around Vancouver Island off-season, but they tend to travel further distances in the winter months and might not be around for weeks on end.

Transient Orca are year round and in lesser "pods", usually 2-3 together, sometimes more, but are frequent throughout and even come into Sooke Harbour now and then, such was the case 2 weeks ago.

om gawd... Awesome, but you do know that when they swam underneath you, they were sizing you up!  They're smart enough to do a coordinated wave attack on an animal trapped on a piece of floating ice... and smart enough to decide you are an easy tasty morsel to flip over. I love killer whales, but goddammit, I'd decidedly choose a bigger boat to be in while watching them! lol   :)
Monique D
Monique D - 7 years ago
Actually, our Southern Residents do not perform those behaviours. They are fish-eaters! Transient orcas are mammal eaters, but even the transients we see in BC do not perform those types of behaviours. We don't have ice flows. That's yet another interesting thing about orcas- they have "culture", and behaviours that are very specific to type and clan. We don't see orcas here in BC that prey on mammals on ice flows. :)

I can't even watch videos on captive or wild orcas without idiots spouting anti-SeaWorld propaganda. Do your research, people. Just because you watched a "documentary" on the subject does not make you an animal welfare expert.
Keith James Lapere
Keith James Lapere - 9 years ago
These creatures are very intelligent mammals. In the wild there are no known cases of them attacking humans. Curious and mischievous for sure.
Along time ago i went for a dip on the East coast along with some buddies in the Bay of Fundy,We did not know at the moment but a whole pod was swimming around us. Didn't take us long to get out of the water but as being normal humans and never seen these magnificent creatures in the wild before we got the living shit scared out of us!.But seeing them in the wild we were in awe! I was glad to have the privilege once in my life time!! All i can say it was bloody amazing!!! I had realised after then they don't belong in any aquarium for people to see. There should be no more capturing. The ones in captivity or the ones born should remain as they won't know how to survive in the wild. You haven't seen a erect dorsal on a full grown orca,  until you see it in open water, it is huge!! That just shows how healthy it is. They have attacked and killed trainers in captivity but that is only because they have been cooped up for so long and they get bored. Even sea lions, seals and dolphins believe it or not. As my brother use to be a trainer and got bit on the back of the calf while coming out of the pool on the plat form and ended up with quite a few stitches.
If you ever get a chance this is the place to see them..... in the wild they are more amazing then seeing them as a amusement in a park some where.

Anyone who is posting a reference to the doc Blackfish does not seem to understand that this video in no way appears to be harming the whales. The kayakers are minding they're own business and happen to see a pod of whales in the Vancouver area, which is completely normal. The kayakers are not HARMING the whales, the kayakers are watching them from a distance and the whales happened to, being the emotional beings they are, swim up to the kayaker sand say hello! It was the whales choice to swim up to them and stop by for a visit, the kayakers didn't go to a 100ft cement pool filled with chlorine to force a visit, it all happened organically! I love the documentary blackfish, and I am a strong advocate for marine mammals freedom, but I do not think referencing blackfish is appropriate for this encounter.

+Luna Orca12 Says who? SeaWorld? Try finding an independent and objective source before berating a movie. It doesn't lie, you just decided to swallow SeaWorld's opinion on it. Try watching a fall from freedom or frontline: a whale of a business. Educate yourself beyond captivity related sources.

Orcas look much healthier and happier in the wild but blackfish isn't really the place to get educated about these amazing animals. Blackfish put 69 lies into the movie. Do your own research. I'm not saying you can't be against seaworld, I'm just saying that blackfish lies ALOT about killer whales.

As Oracas go with the title King of the Sea  it makes me wonder if there trying to comunicate with us but will we ever know what they are saying? they could be saying Let our friends and family go or we are ready to show our full secrets but thus will we ever be able to understand them Orcas are unique creatures who deserve as much as we but thus there is the cruel in the world who wants to see animals like them suffer It makes you wonder

There are many whale watching tour groups on Vancouver Island but check the best time of year for optimum chance of sightings for orca and humpback whales.  If you are a nature lover you will not be disappointed to visit our majestic wilderness.  By the way, you are safer, by far, to be kayaking  with orca close by than driving in your car.

THIS is how these magnificent creatures are meant to be viewed: in their natural habitat! NOT in a 35ft tank at an amusement park! I'm terrified of being on boats or any sort, but I wish I could get over that and be able to go on such a liberating experience as this!<3

Orcas are extremely intelligent animals, actually not whales but distant cousins of dolphins. Although this pod primarily eats fish, their species have been found to be highly adaptive and can switch up their diet and learn new tactics to catch prey they haven't hunted before. I think maybe from previous encounters with humans on tour boats they have an idea of what we are and so those kayakers were as safe as could be expected, under the circumstances..............I still ain't getting that close to them though, crazy ass white ppl !!!!

+MrPitiboy There in the same family group, but not the same species. Just like Primates, there is many different species of primates but they aren't the same.
Its like looking at a Neanderthal and a homo sapien (actually a lot more drastic then that) and saying that we are the same.
Well atleast Neanderthals and humans could mate, dolphins and whales cant.
MrPitiboy
MrPitiboy - 9 years ago
+vShoTzZ25 Well, people are split on this subject, some say they aren't whales, some say they are.  I've seen scientists on the matter saying that they're whales, while others disagree. But it seems to me like the majority accepts Orcas and Dolphins as whales. From what I've read, it could be an opinionated subject(with an emphasis on "could be"). Please, feel free to enlighten me on why they aren't whales, I'm always "upgrading" my intellect from various sources, so to speak. :)
vShoTzZ25
vShoTzZ25 - 9 years ago
+MrPitiboy Wrong, both orcas and dolphins are related to whales, they aren't whales.
That's like saying were are baboons, or chimpanzees.

I am always ready to be corrected if needs be so maybe they are, but I think I've heard somewhere on a video about "Blackfish" that they aren't whales........can't remember for sure so you'll get the benefit of any doubt I may have until I can say otherwise.

Guidelines are set--guidelines to help the Orcas so they don't become too acclimated to humans.  Though the experience was wonderful for you, your video will attract others to do the same, and has the possibility of driving humans into the waters.  Humans who have little knowledge of the territorial and feeding habits of wildlife need to educate themselves/ourselves.  B.C. is a beautiful, wild place.  Respect its waters and know that we share it with many animals--not only those of the human variety. kn

It's obvious that the orca came towards them, they are no match for their speed. They just sit and paddle the boat to turn it to watch. The bull is indeed checking him out and he's just in awe.
I'd rather have 50 of these waterbikes (that's what we call them in the Netherlands) in the water than 10 whale watching boats!

That's in captivity where they are often abused, only fed when they perform tricks, fed dead fish (they should be hunting it) forced into pods that are not natural, often separated from their mothers/calves. In the wild, no human has ever been killed by an orca.

ATN

Besides, there are different types of Orcas. The ones in that area only eat fish. Shamu was caught in the wild, he might be one of the mammal-hunting kind. But he didn't even try to eat the people he killed. He just killed them. Because he was caught from the ocean and put in a fish tank. That's our doing and no reason to be afraid of them in the wild.

Orcas don't hunt humans. THOSE orcas don't even hunt mammals in general, so they are no danger to humans. But even the ones who do hunt mammals don't hunt humans. There is not a single record of an attack in the wild (of course they go bananas in those tiny tanks in Sea World...)

Sooke has a lot of sports fishing boats and local pods often circle boats in hopes of catching a salmon on the line or else going after seals and sea lions lured away from shore to do the same thing. Whales could have mistaken their paddle boat for a sea lion until they got closer. Transient whales often use ships as a screen... allowing them to approach sea lion and seal rocks without their fins being seen.

While I was out there, as you heard, I thought it was J1, yes he was alive then. Were you lead to believe this was L-41 because of J-1's disappearance? Because J-1 was still alive and around when you uploaded this video, and, although the angle makes it hard to tell for sure, it doesn't look like that orca has L-41's distinctive nick half-way up the trailing edge of his dorsal fin.

Well , in a strange way , its a test . We use it for politicians and industry and businesses . If they are not on the side of the Orca & Dolphin , and care about their welfare and health , then we perceive them as mercenary , evil , money grubbing bastards , who dont even care about people. This is Very Bad for their " business " . And it encourages people to hear what scientists ( like Ingrid ) have to say. Its a Win / Win situation ! :-)

This was a Southern Resident pod. In the video I state the large male Orca heading for me is "Ruffles", from "J-Pod" and his number was J-1. However I was wrong. I'm lead to believe that this was L-Pod and likely was Mega or L-41. You can search those names and numbers online to see the whales. Unfortunately Ruffles hasn't been seen for a few years and is presumed deceased.

As a whitewater kayaker I had always heard of shit like this. The story goes..."and a kayaker went missing today off the coast of"...... Think of it like this. From the BOTTOM and that's all they see, YOU LOOK LIKE A FAT SEAL, and that's their food. Sharks and Orcas alike will want to take a peek only to find out your are a little bag of bones with a plastic side item (the kayak). Trust me, if they thought otherwise, this footage would be at the bottom of the ocean and you would be orca poop!

In a way , I agree with you. Why should they trust us ? After all that we have done to them. I do not really understand it , but they do trust us. When Orca strand while hunting in the shallows, a whole town will go to help with the rescue . Our Orca seem to remember this act. Ben ( yes, we name our Orca ) even came to thank Ingrid ( who named him ). Our Orca eat rays and sharks. Not people :-) . In general, Orca ( and other dolphin ) are regarded as people .
tasman763
tasman763 - 11 years ago
In New Zealand they are simply known as Orca . I know that they are called Killer Whales in other places , but we do not call them that. They are regarded as Spirits of the Ancestors by some . I find this a nice way to see them. Ingrid swims with them , and some actually play with her . We are starting to understand that Orca are a good measure of marine pollutants ( do a tissue sample ) . As we all depend upon the sea, this is important. Orca make me smile :-)

Obviously this must have been quite an experience, its class to see animals like this in their natural habitat. Not put in a chlorine tank! But orcas scare the crap out of me. They're very graceful but I also think they look quite menacing. They're very intelligent. I saw a great David Attenborough documentary about them recently and they're so clever the way the work together to hunt prey. Certainly don't trust them! But sure why should they trust us humans?
Henriette Anton
Henriette Anton - 11 years ago
again.... these whales aren't out to eat people! The problem with that lies in captivity where the whale turns on the trainer - and i don't blame them. Hundreds of kayak tours depart daily to see these animals, and they have never bumped a kayak. The attitude and view toward these animals needs to change! They don't swim toward you with the intention of eating you and your boat.
Henriette Anton
Henriette Anton - 11 years ago
Agreed - these animals are the largest of dolphins, therefore they portray the characteristics you would see in a wild dolphin when it interacts with boats. They are simply curious and playful. Just because they are nicknamed 'Killer Whale', it doesn't mean they are a vicious eating machine to humans!!
Henriette Anton
Henriette Anton - 11 years ago
I totally agree man, everyone needs to chill out here. The highest number of reported attacks are from CAPTIVE Orcas. These captive orcas are unhappy ...don't even get me started on that topic!! If you put yourself in their territory, you do it at your own risk. These wild animals aren't out to get you, they are simply moving through the area so sitting quietly in a kayak won't provoke them. I say good on these guys - I would love to have this opportunity. Anyway, can't we all just get along?

Glad you are still alive. Maybe you just do not understand the problems you created. Whales are intelligent animals with curiosity, So called killer whales are also vary playful. In Alaska I watched them break apart a raft of logs while just playing with the logs. Take a log by the end down deep and then release it. The log would shoot up out of the water. What if they are feeling playful with your brightly colored kayak? You are endangering the whales by your presence. View then from afar.
karransk
karransk - 11 years ago
One difference though. Whales are unusually intelligent animals, especially humpbacks and Orcas. I have had experience with animals in the "wild". Most of them avoid man, unless you happen to either provoke them or in fear, do something real stupid, like run. If you show no fear, you can play with the most venomous snake (even a King Cobra), as it senses vibration and if you show fear, it reacts aggressively. Or, if you step on it by mistake.

wow. you are a real troll. nice work troll ! I fear many things troll . Pit Bulls , Rottwielers , and humans . Mostly humans . I dont " sugar coat " anything . There are remarkable testimonies of Orca human interaction all over the web . Try Danza con Orca . Try The Woman Who Swims with Killer Whales ( Ingrid....who has a PhD in cetation research ) . In Aussie, a pod helped a whaling team catch Blues for many years. All documented. So shut YOUR mouth. or is that too hard ?
tasman763
tasman763 - 11 years ago
I have multiple references I can give you . No deaths. None . Nil . There is a recorded case where I live of a surfer being grabbed , but the Orca let go as soon as it realised it was not a seal . It was a case of mistaken identity, and not an attack , as you like to call them . Our pod eats sharks and rays . Zero humans. Ingrid Visser and Steve Hathaway regularly swim with the pod. I take it you know who Ingrid is ??? .....where is my wetsuit ??? lets go !
Dan Wright
Dan Wright - 11 years ago
Rare or not, it very clearly rebuffs any comments people make about there being no attacks in the wild. An attack is an attack whether it is 1 or 1001, the point is, it disputes anything people on here have been trying to say doesn't happen. Look, I love those animals, they are awesome but, I'm not foolish enough to say they won't attack in the wild whether it's swimming or kayaking. If they get annoyed, they'll do it whether it's in a kayak or not. People need to stop kidding themselves.
thr3351
thr3351 - 11 years ago
There are exceptionally rare cases but orcas in the wild are generally temperamental, friendly and social mammals. People have been in close proximity with orcas in the wild ever since it was possible and there have only ever been very few recorded incidents involved with these creatures, let alone any fatalities at all. It's very possible to be overtaken and killed by these giants but if they were that aggressive all the time, there would be a very different story and background for them today.
Dan Wright
Dan Wright - 11 years ago
Ok Annie, Miss statistics, we'll take you to Puget Sound & we want to see you jump in & swim with the Orcas to test your theory. You seem to be so sure nothing can or will happen that we would like to see you follow up on your theory by jumping in and going swimming with them ? If you know so much this shouldn't be a problem for us to witness !
Dan Wright
Dan Wright - 11 years ago
I think your name pretty much sums up your comment !
Dan Wright
Dan Wright - 11 years ago
Do some research, yes there have been attacks in the wild, not deaths but, attacks nonetheless so, don't kid yourself & sugar coat things. I get tired of hearing that they don't attack in the wild when there have clearly been cases of that happening, In California, a man was bitten by a K.W. and needed over 100 stitches & there have been more attempts but, why you people leave that out just because no deaths occurred is mind boggling. Tell you what, throw on a wetsuit & jump in with them !!
Dan Wright
Dan Wright - 11 years ago
That's just it, the people on here that are leaving sarcastic comments like to leave out the incidents where Orcas have attacked & bitten a man in California, Charged at a kid swimming in 4 feet of water, yes the attack was aborted but, it proves they aren't these gentle creatures that won't act out. Or back in the early 1900's when a pod tried to tip the ice that some people & dogs were on. Now, people will say, they thought the dogs barking were seals, stop that crap, that's a joke !!
Dan Wright
Dan Wright - 11 years ago
And my original comment affects you how ????????????
Dan Wright
Dan Wright - 11 years ago
There is an article, I read that but, In 1972 a man was bitten by a killer whale in California & needed over 100 stitches so, yes, they can & will attack, just because the initial attack doesn't mean a person will be killed, it proves the fact that they can & will attack & can very well lead to a death or more. It's funny how people leave that incident out all the time when it happened in the wild. It wasn't a case of mistaken identity. The Orca was saying hey, this is my turf !!
Dan Wright
Dan Wright - 11 years ago
Why is it ridiculous ? They are wild animals & wild animals can & will act just like that. It's ridiculous because you don't like it if someone doesn't agree with your line if thinking ? If you don't like what you read just move on, being ignorant with a response is not needed so, If you feel like you want to leap into a kayak and interact with these big guys, you do that but, unless someone is directing a comment at you, just keep your mouth shut ! Is it really that hard ?

Nooo.. They are just in kayaks - which are very eco-friendly vessels, and are gratefully appreciating nature! So appreciate that yourself and that it's not but one more gas-leaking motored vessel.. And enough with McCarthyism-like accusations of what all their experience adds up to.
thr3351
thr3351 - 11 years ago
If that were the case, humans would have been on the menu for killer whales a long time ago. People have been living and interacting with killer whales for as long as they were put together on the same planet. Not a single documented case of a fatal attack to humans by wild orcas in history. The real danger lies with captive orcas, as there have been actual fatal attacks to trainers in aquariums like Sea World by mentally unstable orcas. Wild orcas generally don't perceive humans as a threat.
thr3351
thr3351 - 11 years ago
There has never been a case in recorded history of wild orcas (different from whales in captivity such as Sea World's whales) actually attacking humans. The closest they have ever come to an attack involved a boy being mistaken as prey by a pod of orcas but they realized he wasn't food and quickly aborted their strike. I believe there's an article about that. Captive orcas are actually more dangerous than wild ones. Wild orcas never threaten humans unless perhaps they are threatened first.

You go on believing that. There have been cases years ago where a killer whale pod tried to tip the ice of some people & dogs standing on it. Whether of not they thought the barking dogs were seals is irrelevant because they were also spy hopping ( poking their heads up out of the water ) to see what was on the ice & they are intelligent enough to distinguish the difference between people, dogs & seals so, my point is, there was a attempt in the past to knock humans off of floating ice !!

usually yes, they have a friendly attitude towards humans and boats. as long as you give them there space anyway. there is a reason there called killer whales

amazing video! that bit at the end was breathtaking! I have seen Minke whales and humpbacks and fins go under the boats I was on and they checked us out and even breathed on me, but I have never had a close encounter with orcas like this. :) Someday I will though.

Orcas are a type of dolphin not a whale, they are called killer whales because they kill whales and eat them.

people need to relax. i live on Fidalgo island (near there) and the whales often purposefully move into the boats wanting to check everyone out. the best thing is to just to not move (esp in a motor boat) - and it is more them making contact then us. i really think the whales enjoy themselves checking people out.

Just so you know since records began there's never been a fatal attack or even an attack that produced anything more than a minor injury of orcas on humans. Most people believe that when they roll over they're sizing you up but it's a complete myth. They're merely curious.

Resident orcas (i.e. ones that permanently live near the coast) only eat fish, not large mammals. It's transient and off-shore orcas that you have to worry about. And you need to go to the middle of the ocean to see those, and (hopefully) no-one is stupid enough to do that in a tiny foot-pedalled kayak.
Sam H

This is AMAZING FOOTAGE but there's no way I'd like to be in that position. You were about 5 feet away from being orca lunch. You were extremely lucky you werent killed.

I think, what would scare me most would be, to have an orca not know I was there and either ram me, or accidently surface under my boat. I have enough imagination that it would certainly be on my mind. I suggest that when you do what you do, don't ever wear a tee shirt that says, "Bite Me." It would definately be the wrong shirt to wear.

Simply idiotic behaviour, you were about 30 seconds and 3 feet away from being a Darwin award nominee! Facing wild Orca's in a paddle boat! Let me think about that for a second....

Thank's Maybe I'll take you up on that some Day. It's Funny when I watched your Cool Video I had just spent a couple of hours off the coast of North Carolina in a Kayak with a Pod of Dolphins following me. My boat was slapping the waves and they started slapping their Tails as if to mimic me. A little scary as there were about six of them within about 25'. Orca would have been even more amazing. Great Video ! No offence about the Fish hook. That's my fathers sense of humor coming out in me!

Thanks for the info mate. I do have an interest in nearly all animals (but no real formal education). I just find it really weird that no Orca has thought "I wonder what this strange thing tastes like". They strike me as very intelligent, and I believe that curiosity is tied to intelligence. For the record, I greatly respect and admire Orcas. I just wish I understood why don't really attack humans.
