5 Tips for Choosing a Budget Bluewater Sailboat | Atticus Live

Never miss a live stream! Text ATTICUS to 43506 to receive a text notification every time we go live! We get a lot of questions about how to choose a budget bluewater sailboat. Atticus is a used production fiberglass sailboat that has some great bluewater features (full keel, protected rudder, split sail plan, and a decent sail area to displacement ratio) but we rushed into buying her, and it took us 3 years to get her ready to sail again. Luckily, those three years taught us countless lessons about boat construction, and we wanted to share some tips so that you can avoid making some of the mistakes we did! Did you like this video? Love watching your videos I have enjoyed them from video#1. But Jordan you have to try to stop interupting her every thought. Trust me I know because I'm the same way and my wife hates it Lol.

Hey Cabin Cruiser Little Big Time! Thanks for saying hi!! Haha! I will definitely remind Jordan to knock it off with the interruptions! I got a water bottle for our next live stream, but I felt so bad pulling the trigger! #toonice!! Thanks again for watching!!

Hi Guys, for sure the most informative vlog on you tube. keep them coming. Love you both... well maybe 80/20 in favour of Desiree!!! We'll keep checking in on you.

Project Atticus - 6 years ago
Haha! You're so right Bob! We would be wounded if you let us drink alone :) Very cool! Well I think the reason not many people sail there (as far as I've heard) is that there is only one port that's "safe" for cruisers, so I think a lot of people bypass it. That being said, if we could find a place to leave our boat, and then venture inland that could be cool! Which spots do you like there? And super cool that you guys got married there! I bet it was incredible!!

Yes, LOVE Jamaica, a topic/place very few Sailing Videos venture to. Pam and I were married there in 2009 and we've been going back every year to celebrate the anniversary. Not sailing unfortunately, for now we do the resort thing but we intend to someday and why we're looking for any info from people who have. We know where to go or where not to go on land but no experience from the water.
We watched your live stream from start to finish after you posted it... bottle of wine on hand of course. Somehow it just wouldn't be civilized to have you guys drink alone!!!
Have fun, be safe and see you guys soon.

I wrote down what you mentioned last time, "small boat topic", and short, medium term and long term goals. Great ideas! So you guys will be in Jamaica in February?! Very cool! What's the occasion?

Haha! Hey Bob! Desiree here! Thanks for BOTH compliments! Glad we're providing helpful information! We're excited to release our weather fax video on Monday, which we're excited about too! Any other concepts or questions you'd like us to cover? Thanks for watching and saying hello!

Hey guys! Any suggestions for what skills one should try to have in order to make some money while cruising?
Project Atticus
Project Atticus - 6 years ago
Hey Benjamin! Great question! We've met all sorts of people making money while cruising! You could do remote online work (like social media or writing), you could have a skill like massage therapist, you could be a welder, or in our case we specialize in sewing work and Jordan can pretty much fabricate anything from scratch now-- it took him 3 years of refitting Atticus to get there, but it has paid off! Really anything you can think of that goes into boat maint. Outboard maint. is great! Are you taking off any time soon? Hope this helps!

Great video!!! I have one question that I haven’t seen anyone ask you yet: are there any issues working abroad? Work visas?
Gene McKyle
Gene McKyle - 6 years ago
Thank you! That answers it!
Project Atticus
Project Atticus - 6 years ago
Hey Gene! Thanks for your question! We generally only do work for cruisers, so it's kind of a bubble and a grey area. We try not to take any jobs from locals- most of the time cruisers like working with us because we speak english, and we are culturally similar, if that makes sense! We haven't had any issues yet. Hope that answers your question!

What part of the refit would you say took the most time ? Seems like a tiller steered boat leaves you exposed in storms ...
Project Atticus
Project Atticus - 6 years ago
Hey California Kayaker! Hmmm, it's hard to say what took the longest. Jordan probably has a different opinion than I do (I was intermittently working on yachts for weeks or months at a time during the refit to continue to finance the work). I'm tempted to say that re-coring, fairing, and painting the decks took the longest time. And true re: storms, but we like the comfort knowing that it's such a simple system that not much could go wrong with our steering in a storm. We're still figuring out the kinks of comfort while sailing :)

“Don’t go for the biggest boat that you can afford, go for the smallest boat that you are comfortable with.” How very wise, excellent advice, how many times do we see Youtube videos of young couples looking at potential live aboard cruising boats and concentrating on the size of the ‘kitchen’ etc without sparing a thought for the rig, hull and sail maintenance and mooring costs that come with a larger boat. The extra 10 foot rule makes perfect sense. Your full keel and split (ketch) rig are perfect for what you are undertaking. I sailed a small yawl for years and found that with the mainsail safely stowed she could handle almost any wind with a partially reefed headsail and the mizzen. Tiller steered too. Your practical abilities which let you earn money as you go and as it is needed, show us your sensible approach to funding your voyage. PS. It’s snowing in the UK right now, I think you are in the best place.

Hey Peter T! Thanks for your thoughtful comment! We're always striving to be as smart and practical about risk management as possible, so we read and do a lot of research! Haha! I'm glad it's not snowing here! I'd start to miss hot showers too much!! Stay warm and thanks for saying hi!

Funny! How to get your girlfriend/wife, I just told my wife we are living on our yacht, I dont like living on land its a better life and we can go whereever you want. Great point of views from you both, keep up the good work.
Project Atticus
Project Atticus - 6 years ago
Haha! Yeah I wouldn't advise Jordan's approach! I always say, go out on a sail and let your partner fall in love with the lifestyle herself first. Get a captain, get delicious food and drinks. Splurge so that you know what you're working for during the crappy parts of the adventure (like the refit, seasickness, storms, etc). Anyways glad you enjoyed the LS! Thanks for watching!! Let us know if you and your wife end up hitting the water!!

There is also the option of part time (periodical) sailing before you jump into the big decision of doing it full time. Great video, lots of valuable advise! Well done! ;)

Been on this ride since the first release of the first video....I was so bummed when there was a long break in the videos, I thought it was no more and then suddenly, a new Atticus video, jubilation and dancing in one of the restaurants I run....my employees thought I was crazy My wife loves your videos, and I love you guys for that, she was a little hesitant about my dream of a cruising life. But thanks to you guys, she’s all in, we r saving every dime, researching boats and she’s learning how to swim......you got me right off the bat, but you have given her the dream and for that, I am truly grateful........

Great info, I enjoyed it very much, my 2 cents,, look for message boards of boat owners who own your possible boat. Sail small boats, if you can master a small boat, the larger ones are easier for the most part. It"a fantastic market for mono hulls, your thoughts on the boat time and costs to keep up between small and larger is spot on.

Thanks you guys Cheers, Popeye in Sarasota

Hey Popeye in SRQ! This is great advice! Message boards are a great way to get information! Also I've heard of some new sailors specifically buying a boat like a westsail specifically because the westsail community online is so helpful, well documented, and informative! Thanks for watching and say hello to SRQ for us! Have you been to Taco's to Go yet? My (Desiree) father owns it! Tell him you're a subscriber and he will love you!
