Thanks for sharing thoughts from such a famous freediver. I can't help but cringe when I see someone touching sea life though... Who are you to bother living forms in their own environment. You are but a guest here, please be mindful and don't disturb the sea life.

why is he ruining the corals???
לוסיה קונסטנטינובסקי
לוסיה קונסטנטינובסקי - 6 years ago
at 0:35 he touches the brain corals with his spins and then moves all the sand around them, corals are living creatures and they are very sensitive, every touch or even sand can kill them.

If you re interested in Freediving, please do not direct yourselves towards a PADI course!! Although well known name in the submarine industry, they are a money making machine recognising only the potential value of a freediving curriculum.
There are way better organisation that are actually in love with the sport.

I, myself have started with APNEA TOTAL and once my instructor level acquired, will decide upon SSI or AIDA (to have a more internationally recognised diploma)

PADI will taint the sport with various low qualified teachers.

Nice video
I would like to have access to sea and a good partner then I could go deeper than my personal record (12m and 3 min).
And sadly here in Germany are not very much free diving schools and less spots where you could free dive.

And all I can, I have learned by myself.
And all I know is it is nice sport but also very dangerous.

Love the channel folks. Free diving I managed 34 meters on my gauge. could hve gone deeper but surfacing after that greater depth would have meant surfacing into path of speedboats where I was in greece. Believe almost anything possible as I was down for 4-5 minutes on one lungful each time. Buit I was able to give a two week span. felt I could have gone much deeper for much longer. No buddy to dive with was another reason i stopped experimenting. Trick is - don't spend energy on the first ten metres. Let the intial descent when your body first goes vetical drive you down and I found a mermaid wiggle that cost no energy eventaully got me pat the magic ten without having burnt much oxygen, thereafter the depths are yours if you have the bottle. c

I'm so happy to know you're now aware of the safety, risks and techniques needed to free dive without risks. This discipline is one of the most rewarding skills a human can have. I love when you guys go an film something other than you're sailing adventures there always soo good an educational, over the last 6 months or so I've wanted to pursue in underwater filming particularly all the sea life down there but was skeptical as I suffer with fairly bad ears even sometimes getting earache from even the depth of 2 meters at the local swimming pool :( I never realized that everyone had to equalize properly and never really tried it myself, I can now put this to the test an hopefully I can make something of what i have learned here, Thank you gain.

+Sailing La Vagabonde I wasn't complaining. I'm sure there's not much you can do to connect out in the middle of the Pacific. I was watching your videos in the Caribbean where it all seemed fairly safe - you were within sight of land and there seemed to be people all around. Then, you're suddenly out in the middle of the Pacific. No longer seemed safe. It was like transitioning from a peaceful, beautiful dream to something scary.

thank you so much for covering this. i would love to get into free diving, especially when i get into the more tropical areas later in life. i especially liked him covering how to equalize the ears easily, i tried the "squeeze the cheeks" method, and it works like a charm, this will help me out tremendously as the past few years i have had big problems with even going a few feet down in a pool !! i will certainly try this equalization method this summer. thank you for your informational and inspiring videos, and keep them coming !! looking forward to your pacific side videos soon

Yep, agreed, IMO diving alone anytime is or can be asking for trouble...Elayna should always buddy dive together with him, no matter what...It only takes a second to drowned... I am a certified scuba diver for many years, as my son is and he freedive spearfishes mostly the California coast...But he never goes out alone...I don't care how much meditation, yoga or panic training you may have...If you happen to get tangled up in steel fishing leader at 20 feet down and you cannot break free of it alone, you are going to most likely panic and drown...
Believe me I love diving, especially scuba, but our instructor pounded into our heads to always buddy dive for safety...

On top of the over-all general awesomeness, I've noticed your camera work and editing getting better with every video! Great video! A partner is a must! Shallow water blackout is killer! Staying down an extra 10 seconds chasing a fish could be your end. I would of liked to see some video about what your partner should do if you do suffer from SWB. It usually happens very close to the surface! As I see you dive alone a lot don't push the limits! No fish or lobster is worth it! I've lost a few friends in only 10 to 20 meters due SWB chasing a fish!

This was so interesting and beautiful to watch. Not to ask a dumb question, but did he have the stroke because he went too deep?
Sailing La Vagabonde
Sailing La Vagabonde - 8 years ago
Hey +MsGreatGlam! No question is a dumb question :) It was suspected 'Decompression sickness'. DCS is when nitrogen bubbles get trapped in our blood due to pressure at depth. Long stay, repetitive dives or quick ascents increase the risk.

I noticed you guys learned a lot from Carlos in the sense that Elayna no longer free dives with her snorkel in her mouth like in some of the spear fishing videos I've seen from you guys. For those youtubers reading this that haven't read (about)/(don't do) much freediving, I've read it's not advised to freedive with a snorkel in your mouth. The reason being that if you black out while having a snorkel in your mouth water could rush down into your lungs and you could suffocate even if your partner pulls you to the surface. It's interesting to see you two acquiring new skills and becoming more experienced and good visual proof that Carlos's school teaches good lessons. Great videos as always.

If you're interested in free diving, I recommend tracking down a copy of 'The Big Blue'. An amazing film by the incredibly talented Luc Besson, starring Jean Reno, and a phenomenal soundtrack by Eric Serra. You will not be disappointed. Amazing footage and cinematography too.
Nathan Johnston
Nathan Johnston - 7 years ago
Jean-Mark Barr was the star of that movie. Jean Reno was a fantastic supporting role. The movie was based on the life of Jaques Mayol with a little creative licence from Luc Besson. That movie I watched as a boy in outback Australia motivated me to take up spearfishing, become a scuba instructor and pearl diver in Australia, then around the world on a 20 year career. Thanks Luc! ...but my real hero is not Mayol. He is a little known Greek sponge diver named Haggi Statti. Haggi was the MAN!

Look, I'm sorry Jonathan, really I am for your loss. But I just made a comment about how I enjoyed their episode, all their shows. You are going off on something personal. So they forgot to mention a very important part of free diving? I'm sure it was unintentional. And, every single person is different, allergic to and susceptible to different things, environments, etc.... example, bee stings kill one man within minutes another walks away. I'm in Tennessee so I don't do much free diving unless it is in 15-20 ft of murky water. Good luck t you sorry for calling you a pup. But stop with the guilt trip for yourself and others

I wish me and my fiance had the courage to leave our home and our careers to live like you two do. I've literally had a dream of sailing with you guys.
How did your families react to your absence at home?
Even though I'm 24 years old, if I told my mother that I was planning to leaving home, for even just a 6 month adventure, I think she would be devastated... almost angry with me for being so "reckless". :( But my heart aches for the adventure.

+Savvy Sailing You can't equalize pressure in your ears with ear plugs, you can only use them on the surface(snorkeling, surfin, swimming...)
Sailing_And_Fun
Sailing_And_Fun - 8 years ago
+Peter Linch That was random, but funny. To be more specific, Riley mentioned problem with chronic ear infections and wondering if ear plugs would keep water out during deeper dives.

what about ear pressure?
John Doe
John Doe - 8 years ago
+Jonas Rosenven thanks man.
Jonas Rosenven
Jonas Rosenven - 8 years ago
+John Doe That is why it is important to equalize the pressure. The most common way to do it is pinching your nose shut and trying to blow air out of it until you hear a click in your ears and feel the pressure going away. It has to be done several times as you go deeper. He describes this technique and another one at around the 5 minute mark.
John Doe
John Doe - 8 years ago
+Jonas Rosenven doesnt ear pressure affect you in the ocean? He said hes been as deep as 140 meters. I cant imagine the pressure at those levels.
