Stand up paddling with a new GoPro HD HERO camera (httt://ww.gopro.com) mounted on a 10 ft pole in search of getting video of the Great White shark at San Onofre state beach. I paddle out on my Hobie Stand up paddle board, 250 yards by myself and within minutes a shark surprised me with a swing of his tail, almost knocking me into the water. The shark swam away and another 7' shark appeared and circled my board off and on for 12 minutes. it was an insane experience which i hope to enjoy again soon. chuckpattersonsports.com chuckpattersonsports.wordpress.com e
Humans have a fear for sharks that may be in part innately rooted in our past when we did need to be on constant alert for large predators. More importantly, in today's world we constantly are subjected to the media's stereotypic characterizations of sharks, which are rife with misinformation and actively promote fear and loathing. Finally, we as humans are used to controlling the world around us - damming rivers, flattening mountains, shooting a charging elephant - but sharks, like typhoons, lightning and tornados, are something we cannot control, hence our great interest in them.
What are the chances of being attacked by a shark?
The chances of being attacked by a shark are very small compared to other animal attacks, natural disasters, and ocean-side dangers. Many more people drown in the ocean every year than are bitten by sharks. The few attacks that occur every year are an excellent indication that sharks do not feed on humans and that most attacks are simply due to mistaken identity.
How many people are attacked each year by sharks?
Worldwide there is an average of 50-70 shark attacks every year.

What the fuck kind of statistic is that? Is that the chances of someone getting attacked by a shark in their life? You know how many people don't go to the ocean? This is stupid. Find me the statistic of people who encounter sharks unprotected and how many of them are attacked or not. I'll tell you, it's not 1 in 11 million. It's likely somewhere around 10%.

the only reason that this guy isnt dead is because the shark was THIS time not interested in him.
By all means I LOVE SHARKS, especially white ones, I love seeing them in any kind of docu serie or movies, but that doesnt mean i'm willing to risk my life by going into the water with one.
The reason these white sharks are coming to the shores and are more curious about people is because they see them more often then they actually should.
We humans are creatures that live on land, but we can sustain in water, altough not for a very long time.
They are the habitants of the sea, and I respect them for it by understanding that my place isnt in the water, nor in the water with them.
The increase of sharkattacks and the reaction to it : more shark hunts, is thanks to the people that go in the water altough there is an alert of possible shark attacks (i.e. surfers, boarders, kayakers, swimmers,...)
Its solely due those people and their tourist behaviour these creatures have to die so they can ensure people's safety in those areas.
And i think this is completely wrong.
You may encounter sharks and live, but its like russian roulette, it is bound to happen sometimes.
There has not been a shark sighting there for quite some time but a couple of years ago sighting "Fluffy", a much larger Great White, was common. It was always interesting to see surfers in the line up pull their feet out of the water as she would swim by, it looked like everyone was doing "the wave" with their feet. Like that would save us.
