Lets think about it, they said an asteroid wiped the dinosaurs and fish aren't dinosaurs. Some of the prehistoric fish could have lived deeper down such as the megalodon. Us humans have only really explored 5 to 8% of the ocean today and all scientist can do is make a guess that there is no longer any more prehistoric fish that size. So me over here, I believe these sharks could still be alive. The sharks we have around today were alive with megalodon but weren't as deep. Therefore, megalodon or any other prehistoric creature could have survived so this is what I believe.

This may be a misunderstanding on my part.  I grew
up in Charlotte, NC.  We used to go to Myrtle beach every year and there
was sandy soil pretty far inland from the coast.  Does this mean that the
Atlantic coast was much further inland thousands or millions of years ago
?  I think someone once told me that but I don't know if it is true.

The World Health Organisation estimates that 725,000 people are killed each year by mosquito-born diseases. A staggering 200 million people are at least temporarily incapacitated by malaria alone, of which 600,000 die.
At least one influential individual is spreading the word about the killer insects.

Sea Monsters - Past & Present - 6 years ago
"there were sightings of giant sharks during world war II and off mexico..."

You watch Discovery Channel's mockumentaries much?

"..there are huge ones reported via scout plane..."

Whatever that's supposed to mean...You do realize that simple claims are not going to convince anyone except the most gullible and naive?

"..and a big momma shark that was tagged and had measuring equipment went missing the equipment washed ashore what ever hit her ate her in one bite..."

Not true either...the tagged shark was 10 feet/3 meters long (white shark grow at least up to 20 ft/ 6 meters) and the tag probably was bitten off and ingested by another white shark. We don't even know if the tagged shark was killed, let alone eaten...

There is no such thing as prehistoric. Carbon dating can't be proven.
And I get so sick of people trying to shove these lies down my throat.
The truth is, there five thousand years old.
Not millions of years old.
To get it right, here's a real video to watch.

"I get so sick of people trying to shove these lies down my throat..."

If you get so sick by being fed lies, you wouldn't be watching creationist videos and visiting their websites.

"There is no such thing as prehistoric."

No, just a magical age where magical beings pop other beings into existence, we understand...

"Carbon dating can't be proven..:"

Well, for one thing scientists don't use carbon-dating to date fossils because there is no carbon left inside a fossil to date. Perhaps you should actually try and understand what carbon-dating is and is used for by scientists before criticizing it.

All these people did was make a giant great white. I have seen several Megalodon and they are an orangey reddish colour and not nearly as fat as these so called experts theorize. They typically stay at depths greater than 6000 feet and they only eat Humboldt squid. The are also man made! We made these sharks roughly 8000 years ago to rid the seas of the Humboldt squid as they were responsible for slowing the advancement of humankind by attacking ships.

There is evidence that Megalodon still exists today. Some old photographs within the last 90 years do show that the Megalodon
still exists. Then there was the more recent case that a boat went down off the coast of South Africa
due to an attack by the Megalodon. Also a whale carcass off the coast of Hawaii showed that a whale was chopped in half.
And even a report of a giant reptile called the Mosasaur that was reported by an eye witness during WWII. Also a video
deep under an oil rig that showed a megalodon deep underwater.
Sea Monsters - Past & Present

If the vertebrae is similar I would think that it would hold more weight than teeth. The teeth of a 50-70 foot predator would be very different from a 20 foot predator. The animals weight and size would determine its teeth size and difference. It would need thicker teeth and and likely stronger gum anchors because of the size of prey it attacked. An evolutionary detail in my humble opinion. The larger the prey the thicker and stronger the tooth would have to be. Look at a Sabre Tooth Tigers teeth. The large ones at the front are much thicker and bigger than say a Tiger who preys on smaller prey as Tigers who live today demonstrate. Same phenomena likely.

Cassie C
Cassie C - 6 years ago
Also, the megalodon and the great white aren't that closely related. There's no way it simply shrank until it became the modern great white. You hear them say that themselves in this documentary- part of what stumped them trying to assemble the teeth of a Meg into a jaw arrangement was that they were using GWs as a pattern and the teeth of a Meg are actually very different. Once they figured that out, they were able to finally solve the puzzle. If the Meg had simply shrunk until it became a great white, it would have been a breeze for them to construct the jaw.
Cassie C
Cassie C - 6 years ago
Eddie Plays - A variety of factors triggered various extinction events, including everything from super volcanoes to asteroids. These events usually killed through major global climate change, managing to trap in heat and gases and as the planets temperature rose, not everything could survive. As smaller things closer to the surface of the oceans died, the apex predators would be left without food and starve.

The Megladon STILL is alive and well. It was documented back in 1985, and again in the late 90's well into the new millennium. They didn't become extinct as most scientists believe, because they've adapted in Mariana Trench, where in 1985 it had attacked a submersible submarine type gadget. I wholeheartedly believe that the Megladon learned to adapt like the modern day Great White. There are many different videos that shown this beast of a shark swimming across cameras, and biting in half Sperm Whales, which was discovered either in Hawaii or the Philippines. The way that I personally look at it; IF other types of "dinosaur" type of predators, like the Komodo Dragon, evolved, why not the Megladon?
Sea Monsters - Past & Present
Sea Monsters - Past & Present - 7 years ago
Dear Toni Remer,

glad to see you still active in this thread. Hope you can spare a minute for my prior comment as well...

"There are other creatures in our oceans that we've thought that had gone extinct, but are now roaming the oceans now. We cannot discount that these beasts survived when, as I said before, others had."

Before, you compared the megalodon to a Komodo dragon. How exactly are those animals comparable?
Now you mention creatures in our oceans that we had thought were extinct but are still roaming the ocean. Again, in what way are they comprable to megs?

"We've only explored a very small portion of our vast ocean spaces compared to our space explorations"

Yes, another very popular argument, but how about taking into account what we do know first? You totally disregard that. Why?

"There have been sightings of this beast and was even caught on underwater cameras, especially next to oil rigs."

have you got a source for that? To date you haven't even addressed my first comment here.

"They're the only sharks known to man that can be stationary and can swim vertically."

Where are you getting this info from? The pseudo-documentary "Shark of Darkness - Wrath of Submarine" by chance?
Toni Remer
Toni Remer - 7 years ago
Khatijeh Kattan I'm not a fool. Megalodon sharks exist. There are other creatures in our oceans that we've thought that had gone extinct, but are now roaming the oceans now. We cannot discount that these beasts survived when, as I said before, others had. We've only explored a very small portion of our vast ocean spaces compared to our space explorations. There have been sightings of this beast and was even caught on underwater cameras, especially next to oil rigs. They're the only sharks known to man that can be stationary and can swim vertically.
Khatijeh Kattan
Khatijeh Kattan - 7 years ago
Toni Remer don't be a fool. megs have been extinct for millions of years. larger range great whites are - guess what - still great whites. large poodle puppies aren't great danes, they're just big poodles. great whites may have evolved from shared ancestors of megs, but they aren't them.
Sea Monsters - Past & Present
Sea Monsters - Past & Present - 7 years ago
Hi Toni Remer,

1. Nothing was documented in 1985. What you are referring to is a made up story which has been copied on Youtube by the likes of Riddle. ---> https://steemit.com/history/@fairider/secrets-of-the-mariana-trench

The ship Glomar Challenger was already long out of service and scrapped by 1985, so it couldn't have lowered the "hedgehog" into the Trench in that year. ---> http://www-odp.tamu.edu/glomar.html
Accordingly there was no fresh tooth found. As you claim it was documented, please provide the source you are referring to here.

2. If megs were similar to white sharks, there is no rational reason whatsoever to assume it was a deep-sea shark nor would it be rational to assume it would elude our observation.

3. All those videos you are referring to show either large white sharks, whale sharks or basking sharks or faked footage from Dis covery Channel's mockumentaries Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives (2013) and Megalodon: The New Evidence (2014) or footage from horror films or documentaries. To date there is not a single video that shows a present-day megalodon.

The sperm whale story from Vancouver coast was a hoax: http://www.sagenews.com/article.asp?id=3052

If you mean this from Hawaii https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRwFpDkQYP4&t=2s then it is from the mockumentary Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives. That isn't real either. Those are actors, the whale merely CGI.

4. In what way is the Komodo dragon really comparable to C. megalodon?

5. 99% of all animals have gone the way of the dodo. It is you that must explain why the meg should be the exception.

6. As with most meg-lives-advocates, there is no consideration whatsoever on what scientists do claim about this shark or its extinction. Why?

frank dizzle
frank dizzle - 7 years ago
Espada2234 the coelacant was a deep water cave dwelling fish not a 60 foot apex who preferred warmer coastal shallow (in comparison) waters. There are no videos on YouTube that are legitimate for the existence of Megalodon if it's not published in a scientific journal and blasted on every science site and Google search then it's not real don't get me wrong it's nice to think about but that's just not the way the world works we don't need to search every square inch of a jungle to know there's not a penguin there
Espada2234
Espada2234 - 7 years ago
Not always. the coelacanth was considered extinct for longer there was barely any evidence on it till recent decades. here is a video that has me believing. some are fake others aren't https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNsnHdIxovw but the biggest question is this. animals evolve how to see know it didn't evolve aswell? All I am saying you can never been fully 100% certain
Khatijeh Kattan
Khatijeh Kattan - 7 years ago
Espada2234 scientific consensus confirms they have been extinct for millions of years. that is fact. if they existed, there would be tremendous amounts of evidence.
frank dizzle
frank dizzle - 7 years ago
Espada2234 they can tell you what isn't down there. Megalodon. They would be up here too. Not just down there. And we'd see evidence. So if they aren't up by the top they aren't by the bottom. Cuz the top was their hunting and breeding zone. So if they aren't in the warm coastal shallow they aren't in the complete polar opposite of the water they thrived in. It would be like a penguin leaving a plethora of fish and ice for a desert and the occasional bug
Espada2234
Espada2234 - 7 years ago
Experts can only go based on what they know and they still know very little about the oceans. No one can say for sure. example Experts once said the giant squid didn't exist and look what happened.they also once said that the coelacanth was extinct look what happened. I am not saying that it is still alive but I am not saying that It's 100% impossible either. for all we know it could have adapted in a way not seen who knows.
frank dizzle

Espada2234 http://www.iflscience.com/plants-and-animals/could-megalodon-still-live-deep-ocean/
Great article. But hey What do they know right. They're just experts
frank dizzle
frank dizzle - 7 years ago
Espada2234 and btw the previously thought extinct animals aren't 50 foot apex predators that spent their lives patrolling the coasts eating mammals. They small fish and sharks that have always been extreme deep dwellers and or plankton eaters.
frank dizzle
frank dizzle - 7 years ago
Espada2234 sperm whales dives a lottle.over 3000 feet. We seen them. Giant squid are down there. Seem them. Found evidence. Meg PRIMARILY fed on whales as they would need massive amounts of blubber rich food to support the metabolism. Sure a meg would kill a sperm whale 4k feet down but it wouldn't ONLY feed at 4k feet. It would also hunt them at the surface and everywhere in between. We would find new teeth as the shed them constantly. There would be carcasses of animals with massive wounds. Doesn't matter if we have explored 1 percent or 99 percent they know enough about megalodon and sharks in general to know they wouldn't abandon their nurseries, warm waters, food supply and millions of years of instinct to all permanently dive to only the unexplored ocean to areas where their primary sources of food don't frequent. They would still follow the whales. Still have babies by the coast still shed teeth still leave massive holes in dead animals still be seen on occasion stikl have ANY evidence of existence. They're dead. For good. Forever
And until one shred of evidence is discovered there's no argument.
Espada2234
Espada2234 - 7 years ago
Actually It does. sperm whales dive that deep to feed on giant squid and meg didn't just feed on whales either. truth of the matter is people know next to NOTHING about megalodon and even modern day great whites.ever year people are learning new things in comparison we know maybe 10% of everything about great white at best.
frank dizzle
frank dizzle - 7 years ago
Espada2234 but the meg spent almost all its life hunting and breeding in warm water close to the surface in coastal regions. Their prey didn't live in the unexplored part of the ocean. The unexplored ocean is very very deep and doesn't support large predators that feed on whales.

Fenton Hardy
Fenton Hardy - 6 years ago
Listen, man is the most advanced species on the planet, we bettered ourselves through hard work, Sharks kill for fun, they seem to love killing animals. I think human beings have done a lot of good, I know how it is to kill someone I served in the Vietnam War, and it was tough, I felt so bad I couldn't sleep well for a week. Human beings are great because we can adapt, through technology, we also have common sense, which animals do not have for the most part. Like your dog, every time the doorbell rings the dog starts yapping up a storm and you tell the dog, Look Burglars don't ring the doorbell, and the dog gives you that look of "Duh...what's that mean?". My point is human beings are not in general, horrific, some are of Course just look at Communism and Socialism, two evil philosophies. Humans were God's great creation because he gave them knowledge, smarts, and the ability to adapt. Some animals can adapt and are smart, the Killer whale for example, however they still can build houses, walls, nor use tools and weapons. I don't think animals have that I feel bad for what I killed mind, they kill it eat it, move on, Humans should take part of that approach as far as other animals, we are a top predator, we must fight to remain there, living on leaves does not lead to a sustained lifestyle in the wild, most vegetarian species that haven't the natural ability to defend themselves like getting out of harm's way with great speed like a Zebra or a Gazelle, or having horns to fend off predators like Moose, Deer, Buffalo, and many other horned creatures. Humans should not murder each other, but it happens, sharks attack each other, so do wolves, bears do too. God didn't screw up he gave us freedom to choose, to be good or evil, the evil murder, steal, pillage and torture, four things common in Communist Philosophy and well as Socialism, while the good, defend themselves and others, help others without being forced to, as well as follow God's word. As my father once told me think of it this way, if God wasn't around, the world would be a lot worse. The things man does to survive such as killing an animal for meat and fur, helps feed and warm him, we farm food to balance our diet. As long as the parts of Animals we kill are used, and we don't overdo killing them, they are moral killings, they cannot be called murder.

Sims 3 Forever Dude a predator of that size literally could not exist. The only reason blue whales can get so big is an almost unlimited resource of food. No predator today could be that large anywhere near the surface of the ocean. Plus you clearly are making stuff up, if it exists how come you are the only one to ever see it or talk about it more people would have noticed a predator of that size by now
NTJ1984
NTJ1984 - 6 years ago
Well, you're not entirely wrong, but neither are you fully correct. If you watched the video in its entirety, you would have heard that they mentioned that the Megs fed on lots of things, such as whales, giant sea turtles and fish just to name a few. There were some very large species of fish and turtle back then that along with the other things in its diet, would have been enough for Megs to survive on. Now this isn't brought up in the video, but many fish species (along with other animals) will only grow to a size that their environment and food supply can sustain. This is supposition, but as we don't know for sure, it may be possible that Megs were one of those species. And the fact that yes, a new species of squid has been discovered and is being called the kraken does lend some credence to your argument. However, just you saying you saw this thing, with no official documentation by the authorities, or you giving enough details to let others try to research the incident in question is like me saying I was attacked by Cthulhu while he made the Bloop noise, and then hide behind the circular logic that you guys weren't there so you didn't see it and can't say I'm lying because no body lies on the internet.

Brenda Davis - I'm not him, but I can answer you- both yes and no. He's referring to an animal known as the Livyatan Melvillei, which was a giant predatory whale that's now extinct. The whale is also being called the Leviathan whale. The Melvillei part of the name is to honor the author of Moby Dick. It was apparently the size of a full grown sperm whale but with a bigger mouth and much larger teeth, which easily reached the size of 1-2 liter bottles. (I've seen several people mention it in the comments, so I just googled it. Definitely worth some quick reading. A short article from NatGeo- https://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/06/photogalleries/100630-leviathan-mellvillei-sperm-whale-fossils-science/)

Lil' Pliosaur The seas also have never been rich enough in Whales to feed Megalodon. I mean, come on, think about it. Megalodon, a Fish, that at most was 100 feet long and 100 tons, that doesn't seem very possible that a Fish would get that big. But Whales on the other hand, are the biggest Animals on Earth. Whales have always been the biggest at least that we know of. But seriously, a 100 foot long, 100 ton Fish???????? That's just crazy, but, if it's possible for Fish to be that size, it is 100% possible for an UNKNOWN species of Whale to exist that is much larger than a Blue Whale. And think of Squid. If we have 46 feet long Colossal Squids, who's to say that somewhere in the dark, unexplored, impossible to reach ocean depths, there isn't a Squid much longer and heavier????????? The Kraken is said to be of myth and legend, but there's no proof of that, but nor is there proof of a known Squid that is as big or long as a Kraken. I believe that it is possible that the Kraken could potentially exist somewhere in the very deep, inaccessible, dark ocean.

Striker X
Striker X - 6 years ago
Christopher Tucker not true at all
Tigers on average grow a few inches longer and weigh more by like 1 or 2 hundred pounds
Tigers are Bigger and ironically enough have more stamina
Tigers are know to chase down prey longer if necessary
But Tigers usually go straight for the Fatal blow meaning normally they attack the throat
Now here's where the lion normally takes the victory Lions have thick means that actually protect their throats therefore it's almost impossible for Tiger to fatally take down a lion quick enough
Tigers normally go for a pin down into a jugular bite very quick kills
Lions on the other hand use their powerful blows from their paws to inflict stun and knockdowns
Therefore usually in a fight a lion can get the upper hand because of the protection of its main and the fact that it'll actually sit there and box with its opponent rather than go straight in for the kill like a tiger wood tigers are too quick for their own good
Striker X
Striker X - 6 years ago
Dylan Roberts exactly bruh
It's the same with Tigers and Lions
On average Tigers are bigger and stronger yet Lions are considered King of the Jungle
It's because Tigers tend not to risk the injury of fighting
Tigers hunt and sneak up on prey
Lions tend to actually fight their prey

I've seen how they work together to rock a mating pair of sea lions off a chunk of ice then systematically stalk and rip them to pieces, the most devious and calculating animal in the ocean in my opinion - the dolphins are gay if anything, the unicorns of the sea but killer whales are more like velociraptors, sometimes killing for sport.

+charmedfan7704 Wow. Even before reading your comment, I asked the exact same question. I'm a HUGE fan of Great Whites (and sharks in general), but many ppl still wrongly call the GW the "ultimate predator" in the ocean. The Orca is EASILY the ultimate predator, as it is not only MUCH larger than even the largest GW (an Orca can weigh an incredible 22,000 pounds vs. 6000 for a very large GW), but it's also faster, and MUCH smarter than any GW.

And the GW fears Orcas, as well. There was a Nat Geo documentary that showed an Orca killing a GW, and what the sonar readings showed is immediately after the Orca killed the GW, all the other GWs fled the area, which is known to be a gathering place for GWs. Again, I'm a big fan of the GW, but puuuleeaaase stop with the "ultimate predator" crap, because as fearsome as the GW is, the Orca puts the GW to shame.

Orca's wouldn't be that way at all if we didn't let them over populate with these false protection nonsense and they only kill smaller sharks, almost all white sharks these days never reach their maximum length of over 23+ feet now you always get to see small one around 11-16 feet rarely those of 17-18, and those small white 11-16 feet are not a match for an orca who usually around 25 feet, just not a fair kind of fight, when the orca's are killing their babies

Orcas have no known predators. The young can get killed by other orcas and large sharks but a full grown adult in a normal pack do not get hunted. Even one adult Orca by itself will kill a large great white.

Uh, no, that's not how ecology works; first off, food chains don't exist. There are food webs, because species are interconnected through direct and indirect intermediary interactions, which can be further controlled by population density and phenotypes.
Orcas kill great white sharks as adults. The only time an orca is preyed upon by another predatory species is when the orca is incredibly young. As juveniles and adults, no animal except for humans can prey on them. Even a white shark cannot take on and survive an orca attack.

"6th sense" All organisms have more than five senses. It's not magic. Cetaceans do not "sense magnetic fields." Their brains, just like ours and many other mammals, do possess magnetite, which is part of long-term memory processes in organisms that can quantify such experiences.

It's pretty fucking hilarious that a bunch of bloodthirsty kids want to (1) see animals rip each other to shreds (2) think they know more ecology than ecologists (3) think they know more marine biology than marine biologists.

Yes they are killed by orcas but Great whites are on top of the food chain cause they eat a larger variety and they really both are apex predators they been killing each other through time and both are very intelligent speicmen with Orchas and sharks both having a 6th sense of picking up on magnetic fields
AdeptLen
AdeptLen - 7 years ago
Dylan Roberts Quite often. Many individuals have killed white sharks. They hunt together because it's easier and they can feed the pod.
AdeptLen
AdeptLen - 7 years ago
Dylan Roberts incorrect. Orcas near North America and other parts of the world are recorded as often preying on sharks, sometimes exclusively for periods of time.

An individual adult orca is more than enough to kill a white shark.

If the Megalodon still existed, then Green Peace and the Japanese Whalers would've seen one by now. Whales were the major source of food for Megalodons, and whales migrate, so the Megalodon would've had to follow them (but like said, Megalodon struggled with colder water), just like how Green Peace and the Japanese Whalers follow the whales. Pretty sure both Green Peace and the Whalers would be freaking the fuck out if their radar pinged something 60-70 feet long following the whales.
The huge "Black Demon/Devil Shark" reported in the Sea of Cortez, is likely a Whale Shark. They get pretty damn big too, and have been confirmed to be in the area.

Yeah like the Megalodon will just stand there and let the Killer Whales batter her to death. Megalodon's skin is thick which would minimise the killers bite. One bite from the Mega can snap a Orca in half, and I don't see it unable to catch them. Also, if you knew anything worth shit about Orcas, you would've known they're intelligent creatures and would absolutely avoid a creature twice as big as them. If fact, in this scenario, the Orcas would be the ones running and the Megalodon chasing (if hungry).

Some scientists believe that the reason the megalodon went extinct because of climate change which caused whales(they're main food source) to move to deeper/colder waters which the megalodon could not follow so they eventually starved to death from lack of food, and died out, but some believe the megalodon could of adapted and went to deep waters where we haven't explored just yet because most of the ocean has not been explored

The Bigegest is a fearsome beast. Tales of this beast date back to 5,000 BCE, when man was still young. The beast was said to be taller than a mammoth and as wide as a snake. It was known for its long, dangerous tusks that it would wield in battle with other bigegest of similar proportion. The winner from this display of dominance would gain a harem of bigegest, usually a mix of male and female, whom the winner, be it male or female, would mate with furiously. Because the bigegest was highly bisexual, more homosexual than anything, it died out fairly quickly.

Nah, mate. It's "Mer-ih-lund."

No one seems to understand that the Chesapeake Bay is in VIRGINIA. “Magree-Land” has a tiny fraction of the bay. Idiots.

Impossible. If the orca would have whiped out megalodon there would have to be an enourmous pod of them. The megalodon would probably kill 5 of the orcas.

What if Meg were more like a bull shark? He would then have loads of small teeth, and likely be bigger than a bus. Comparing the teeth of a Meg tooth near a Bull tooth, there isn't much immediate difference. I just looked.

It is interesting how mosasaurs usurped the throne of lamniform sharks so quickly, but they didn't have to compete with carcharhiniform sharks (e.g. bull sharks, tiger sharks, giant snaggletooths, hammerheads, etc.) which are generally more adaptable than lamniforms & these didn't become diverse until well after the dinosaurs. More successful than lamniforms? Probably. More adaptable/dominant than sharks in general? Very speculative. & we all know they are at the mercy of extinction events, sharks have survived several extinction events

Mosasaur was smaller and weighed less (the biggest Megalodon was actually around 20 meters and the mosasaur only 18, and a big part of the lengh was it's tail)

Megalodon would most likely win in a 1v1 but mosasaurus was more successful as a species as far as we know

Mosasaur wasn't that large compared to the Megalodon, if I'm correct. Orca's are pathetic compared to the Mosasaurus, and Megalodon.
