I was very fortunate to have swam very close to one at the beach just below the Miniak theatre in cornwall... i was snorkeling and just saw this huge silloutte... i honestly nearly shit it and actually gulped a mouthfull of sea water i was that scared, it was only when it came closer i realised what it was... OMG it was so scary but so awesome... i dont even scuba dive or anythign like that, i was just on holiday and omg ive had pretty cool animal encounters, like stroking a rhino and Hippo at flamingo land and having a Sparrowhawk land within arms length of me whilst bird Watching in a hide... but shit, i have a fear of the ocean and man that thing was breathtaking

it is big, but is kinda difficult for may reasons, the shark is slow and gentle, and had good sight, which means it will avoid any big object, plus, the mouth fully open reaches 3-4 feet, thats not big enough to eat a fully grown man or woman, and if it happent , i guess that person and the shark both will be dead

My sister and I were standing in 4ft deep water at Scalpsie Bay, Isle of Bute, watching red mullet swim around us. It was blissful. Then a giant shark smashed his tail fin on the water just yards away from us. I'll never forget hearing my own heart pounding in my ears as I panicked to get out of the sea. I also heard the very calm voice of a man standing close by, "It's only a basking shark, he won't hurt you". 'Jaws' ruined an extra special moment in our lives. I now know we were honoured to have been so close to an amazing creature.

Surprised at all the comments here. This shark isn't terrifying at all - it's totally harmless and actually quite sweet. See how it politely avoids the diver as it eats some plankton (and that's all they eat). It has no interest in harming humans at all, let alone eating one! They've even got little dots for eyes, not like the large and scary beady eyes of the carnivorous shark species.

Aquaphobia? :) I was always scared myself, caves, seaweed beds, deep water. I just forced myself to overcome it. It helps that in the UK there aren't too many deadly creatures in the sea to worry about.

They look a little scary with those mouths wide open but hey they´re filter feeders so they are harmless :) In Portugal, where I live, these sharks on rare ocassions come to shallow waters and you can see them from beaches. They are beautiful seriously, I would rather have a beach full of these magnificent creatures than one full of portuguese man´o´wars. Those ones are DANGEROUS -.-

Plankton are very small , even microscopic. They feed for hours at a time where the plankton blooms are thickest. This is why it is so important not to disturb them, other wise they leave before they have enough food.
