Good thing fish experience their central nervous system differently than we do, or he'd be miserable. He's probably just aware that he's a shark and thinks he must have swam too deep.

Just to clarify, this fish is NOT blind. Few deep sea fish are actually blind as they need vision for vertical migration and detecting biolumininescence. Chimaeras have excellent vision, and the cloudy appearance of their pupil in this video is just eye shine from the ligt of the ROV.

When exactly this fish first captured in camera. Because National Geographic claim their footage is the first time ghost shark was ever recorded. But this video is uploaded in 2014 whilst Nat geo uploaded theirs in 2016. Which prove that this video is the first to ever record ghost shark.
Brian A Davis
Brian A Davis - 7 years ago
Why does everyone sound like surprised kids? Can an adult intelligently describe the animal and their behavior?
Eos
Eos - 7 years ago
Brian A Davis Because science is discovery, and being surprised is warranted. If they were trying to dress up their observations in pomp and circumstance 24/7 and forego being actual humans having fun, that wouldn't make for very good observing. They can save the prescriptive grammar for the research article.

Lucky-Ebola-Chan
Lucky-Ebola-Chan - 6 years ago
just because something has eyes doesn't mean they use them the same way we do or even can use them as some creatures in caves and the deep sea cannot see since there is so little light in their environments eyes are useless, use up energy and barely even help or even a likability, especially when faced with a angler

In communication studies we are being thaught that the register/vocabulary you chose doesn't necessarily influence the level of professionality of your communication. E.g. I don't speak English well enough to know the technical terms required to further explain what I'm talking about (Fachlichkeit – Fachsprachlichkeit, Fachtexte und Fachkommunikation... s. Kalverkämper et al.), yet I do know there is no scientifc background to your above statement.

What do you think scientist are doing when not researching?
It's kind of their thing, you know? :D
I'm not sure why you are this offended to hear, that these people are indeed scientists.
They are also not living on this boat 24/7. It's like a mobile lab, so people hop on and off as it fits their research.

Furthermore, you only see a part of their life on this ship.
Because usually livestreaming how a paper is written is quite boring.
bbbuster
bbbuster - 6 years ago
Vulcano living on a boat while having the term scientists placed under your name on the crew rooster couldn't be more obscure. You don't see plumbers walking around calling them selfs heating engineers. Researchers would've been far more befitting.

The "degrees" needed for aquatic study in no way make you smarter than the average person. They are niche in terms of higher learning and advanced education. It's one or two fields of study... they do not invent or create nor design, they merely study what already exists it's in final state and record the data. Doesn't take a rocket scientists to do any of this
bbbuster
