Shirley Anne Durden had been snorkeling for scallops with her husband Barry and friend Keith Coventry. After exploring the ocean, the three started to return to the beach where her four children, ages five to 11, were playing in the sand… WHEN, unknown to the trio, a massive shark had recently been spotted patrolling the area multiple times. Coventry reported that he heard a cry for help and saw Shirley lifted high out of the water just as a huge fin broke the surface. A giant 19-foot great white shark had taken both of Shirley’s legs in one bite and, shortly after, took an arm and her head. Coventry, fearing for his friend, fought to restrain Barry from attempting to help his wife. Ignoring the rescue boats rushing to the scene, the shark continued to circle and devoured Shirley Anne Durden’s remains before disappearing into the deep.
