Bubbles coming out of the mermaids mouth really made me laugh. Think about this, fish "breath" underwater, but can't survive on oxygen on land, which means, they don't breath. Water flows through the lamella, that's a part of the gills, which is actually their lungs. When water flows through it's gills it sends oxygen rich blood to parts of the brain that signal it to pump its gill muscles. It's basically flexing to survive. It would have to be to same for the mermaids. If you put a fish on land it will bob it's mouth open and closed constantly. That's the muscles trying to quickly pump blood through to their brain cause it can't breath oxygen without lungs. And if they can't breath air that means they can't make bubbles. Well, they can on the surface of the water if you through 'em some food. Yep! I'm high as fuck!

If a group of humanoid apes evolved in the ocean they would probably have a stronger sense of smell, excellent eye sight, and a second eye lid to cover their eyes from the salt.
