Sharks : Scavengers of the Seas - Documentary

Before being an earthly paradise with enchanting colours, the lagoon of New-Caledonia is above all a paradise for sharks. Usually considered as fierce predators, sharks really are opportunistic scavengers. Scavengers that are not too picky when it comes to their menu: feathers, fins or fur, anything will do. Amongst the most striking scenes which punctuate this documentary filmed for four years in New Caledonia, is the never-seen-before sequence of the planet’s greatest animal, a weakened blue whale, attacked and cleaned up by hordes of sharks from the surface down to the abyss. High quality images and a dramatic backdrop soundtrack plunge us into the shark's world. Author(s): Cyril Barbançon, Bertrand Loyer Director(s): Cyril Barbançon, Bertrand Loyer Year: 2003 Producer(s): Saint Thomas Productions, Canal+ Running time: 52 mn Distributor(s): Village Distribution Awards: Japan Wildlife Film Festival Japan, 2003 Best Underwater Film More English documentary : Be a predator : Ocean - documentary BBC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvTSmVmcsZk Be a predator : Poles - documentary BBC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3GkryGubic Animal Homosexuality - documentary BBC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYdcvRe7ox8 A man among Orcas - documentary BBC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOicyQf_Lhc A Day in The Life of a Dictator (portrait of craziness in power) - Documentary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TposvnTgmJw

Do you ever ask yourself, what does it (life) all mean? Life in all forms are born hungry and will spend thelir entire life seaching for food. What is the point.

I cannot understand why all humans are not preoccupied wirh this question,. Instead, fnd time to hate and be racist.
blarg2429
blarg2429 - 6 years ago
Simple enough: the drives which fuel our hatred also help keep us alive under extreme circumstances, so if you have time to philosophize you've also got time to demonize. It is unfortunate to say the least.

And as Future Man said, the idea that there is a point is not the only possible interpretation.
I, for one, regard all meaning as fundamentally extrinsic, existing only within minds; this does not cheapen the search for meaning, but refines my methods of doing so and instills a certain wariness towards absolutism of practically any sort.

You, sir, are FOS.  Sharks ARE top predators that will feed opportunistically on carcasses. There are hundreds of species, many of which feed specifically on certain types of live food.  Every one is equipped to survive without scavenging.Actually, man is much more of a scavenger of carcasses than are sharks.  When is the last time you killed the animal you just ate?  Welcome to the buzzard and vulture community.

Only fisherman and hunters are real predators.

The ultimate extreme of 'laziness' is....
@ 3:05, the sea bird, rather than fly off when the shark first tries to eat him, waits until--after several failed attempts from the shark--he definitely thinks the shark may now indeed eat him on the next attempt. Then, and ONLY then, does he bother to get off the surface of the water....and even then he does so in a way that suggests he only wants to put the bare minimum effort into it.

Sheesh....I thought I could be lazy sometimes. Nope!

why do none of these "sea scavenger" videos EVER include the bone eating sea worm? Osedax is a genus of deep-sea siboglinid polychaetes, commonly called boneworms, zombie worms, or bone-eating worms. Osedax is Latin for "bone-eating". The name alludes to how the worms bore into the bones of whale carcasses to reach enclosed lipids, on which they rely for sustenance.

Not really scavengers...more like apex predators finely tuned to detect weakness and exploit it. A scavenger is something that relies on another predator to do it's work for it and then sweeps up the scraps. Calling sharks the bin-men of the sea is pretty much the worst analogy I've ever heard.

Also hate these documentaries that put unnecessary sound/visual effects over the footage.

Actually, Orcas (Killer Whales) are the top predators of the sea (or rather the lions of the sea). Orcas travel in packs and have even been documented to feed on great white sharks.

CarbonitePlays ....If you were to study the great white shark, u would never say scavenger.
They are the top predators of the oceans... like the top land predator on the savanna, the Lion.
Yes , they will come in and finish off a dead carcass ...
And if you dress in all black like their favorite food, seal... well you are dinner... same goes for green and white , like a sea turtle.... dinner also!
Study before you swim.... Great whites don't go after humans for hunger...... Use your head before entering their domain!

some predators are really specific though... I mean, some animals only eat a specific type of pray and this is why invasive species exist. Place in a land where they don't have natural ennemies, they will reproduce like crazy and the native species just won't attack them. some predator are stricly predator as well. for exemple, mantis and spider only eat pray that they kill themselves. the most succesfull predators are the one that aren't afraid of eating carrion though, as this elarge their food suplies and their capacity to adapt... this is why most big predators theses they where their back when dinosaures where rulling the world (shark and crocodile being to perfect exemple...) :)
flymasterA
flymasterA - 7 years ago
I can't think of a predator that is NOT an opportunistic feeder.  Carrion is a different matter altogether. Starving lions will turn their noses up at rotting carrion, while hyenas joyfully eat the maggots along with the rotting meat.
Bob J-M Gervais
Bob J-M Gervais - 7 years ago
You would be surprise to know that most scavenger can become hunters when they need to. for exemple, hyenas, that are really known for their scavenging behaviours actually hunt down 60% of their meals. most predators will often becaume scavengers when easy food is available. for exemple, tigers, one of the best hunter out their is also known to eat meat that is half rooten, simply because it was an easy meal. another exemple, crayfish are also known to be scavengers, but trust me, they can turn into hunters real quick when the need for food force them too... and they also eat a lot of vegetation as well. the great white shark is an apex predator, but not all sharks are. and even as an apex predator, the best way to stay strong and healthy is to eat easy targets. sharks are more of an opportunistic animal then anything else, and this apply to a lot of big predators and scavengers. their is only a thin line between being a hunter and behing a scavenger, and generaly, the most succesfull animals are the ones that have a great range of food and have the ability to adapt to each situation. scavengers and big hunters have an esseical role: they take out the dead, sick, weak, old and less healthy animals and let the stronger ones survive. they stop the propagation of sickness and they shape the behaviours of their prays. when you are out their on the open sea and you don't know when the next meal will come, you just have to eat or become the meal of another animal. To me, the analogy wasn't a bad one, as shark clean up the ecosystheme taking down the weak animals. also, even tho scavengers will more often fallow predators to get the scraps, animal eventually die of oldness or sickness or injuries, so all scavengers don't only depend on other animals to eat. they can search food for themselves. I wouldn't call a shark a scavenger, i would call it an opportunistic eater.

I assure you, the gradual death by starvation the predators would suffer if they found no prey is much worse than the sudden death by biting and thrashing the turtles suffered.

Humans who have faced true risk of starvation and lived to tell of it often compulsively hoard even the tiniest scraps of food for months at a time you know, though I'm unsure what long-term effects sharks and the like suffer from brushes with such an agonizing, slow death. If you got hungry enough, you'd do anything to alleviate it.

at about 46:40 "these living fossils have been around for 5 million years. Long before any other fish" That is incorrect.
The evolution of fish began about 530 million years ago during the Cambrian explosion (of life)
f.e.
According to fossil records, hagfish have existed for over 300 million years, which means they were already old when dinosaurs took over the world!
yes, yes, these are the creatures this video also mentions. So they are a bit older. 5 million years is a blink of an eye in fish evolution. Or consider this: dinosaurs became extinct about 65 million years ago, and they appeared after the amphibia, which appeared after the fish, so the oldest fish with 5 million years is a bad joke
askquestionsplz
askquestionsplz - 8 years ago
lol if you are relying on carbon dating, you are living a lie. carbon dating is known to be skewed to fit the historical narrative of the past. we don't know anything about our own cultures 10K years ago, to assume anything from that time span is wrong. blind tests on dino bones revealed dates within the past 100K years, versus millions, when the subject matter was kept private from daters.

That might be true, but not all fish are descended form the Hag, and many of todays species & sub species are likely to be younger, I think that is what is meant by the commonly accepted wrong term of sharks being older, and what about Megaladon ?

Awesome docu! One of the few on YouTube about sharks I haven't seen. They are beautiful animals. To me, the most beautiful in the world, and my favorite. The only thing I don't like about this docu is that is claims they are simply "common scavengers", a description that brings to mind funny-ass WW2-era Navy training reels, which claimed that sharks are cowardly and splashing will scare them away lol! In fact, while sharks are indeed scavengers, as all predators are, they are also IMHO the best predators on the planet, with an vast array of sensory organs for detecting prey from miles away, even in murky, polluted water, and I'd stake my life on the belief that any terrestrial predator and even many aquatic predators would turn green with envy when confronted with the shark's 6th, 7th and 8th senses, giving them their mighty powers of predation! xP Anyway, this show pwns! Thanks for posting!

Seän Shepherd
Seän Shepherd - 8 years ago
+Dr. Be Yeah, it's sad. Nature ain't pretty, but it is efficient. That's why, after several bad experiences, I've come to understand that man is ironically closest to being a part of nature when he's at war. The only problem is that man also does things in war that don't happen in nature, even in the cruelest jungles of the Amazon. The point is, nature is beautiful, but to our human and thus humane minds, which understand things like mercy, love and gentleness, she can also seem harsh and unforgiving. It's like a quote I heard on another shark documentary, on Shark Week I believe (I'm paraphrasing): "Sharks are exactly like serial killers, except that while serial killers kill to have fun, sharks kill to survive." This is why even though I feel SO bad for the whale and other prey, I try to force myself to look at the situation from the predator's point of view, or even just remind myself that it's natural and supposed to be that way. But I agree, it is sad and the music didn't help. /facepalm
