Sharks Discovered Inside Underwater Volcano (EXCLUSIVE VIDEO) | Expedition Raw

A real life sharkcano? Ocean engineer Brennan Phillips led a team to the remote Solomon Islands in search of hydrothermal activity. They found plenty of activity—including sharks in a submarine volcano. The main peak of the volcano, called Kavachi, was not erupting during their expedition, so they were able to drop instruments, including a deep-sea camera, into the crater. The footage revealed hammerheads and silky sharks living inside, seemingly unaffected by the hostile temperatures and acidity. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Watch all clips of Expedition Raw here: http://bit.ly/WatchmoreExpeditionRaw ➡ Get More Expedition Raw on Youtube: http://bit.ly/NGExpeditionRaw About Expedition Raw: Surprises, challenges, and amazing behind-the-scenes moments captured by National Geographic explorers in the field. Good morning National Geographic I really like to somehow get a hold of Steven Spielberg to see if I/& you can ask him if there is anyway he can help undo the damage that was done making everybody scared of sharks from the movie “Jaws”. I watched a video I can’t find that a scientist found a remote island in the Pacific I believe it was the Pacific, and there were so many sharks he thought for sure there would be no fish and actually the fish reproduced faster when the sharks were around so they were more fish than you could ever believe in the same area as tons of fish!!! I hate to say it is done a bad thing that movie did, sharks don’t want to hurt you!!!

For a long time now, mankind has known animals have a "6th sense" about disaster. The presence of sharks in the volcano means it's probably safe for now. When they flee, you flee.

If only one of the sharks was robotic, my life would be complete... For about two weeks, and then I would demand that they need to also be all robotic, and fly to be cool ever again... After that they would need mini-guns, and after that they need to travel through time, and retroactively colonize Mars in the name flameadon 64, the forgotten game cartridge that never happened, but they like me, love to add the numbers 6, and 4 at the end of everything. Hmmm, I guess what I'm saying is I have a very short attention span. Sharks are neat, and volcanoes are hot, now if you would excuse me, I need to Google "Flamladon 64" click images, and see what pops up!

Perfect source material for a B-Movie. You could call it Lava Sharks or Sharkano Basically the Volcano erupts, spewing fiery sharks onto an unsuspecting seaside resort. Perhaps the eruption has somehow given the sharks the ability to fly and shoot lava out of their mouths.

Water can't be compressed, so perhaps the underwater eruption just pushes the water out of the way and the sharks along with it. It's not the same as having rocks or molten lava flying through the air.

Given the well known propensity of many land animals to anticipate earthquakes and eruptions I'd say it can be assumed the sharks and other life also get early warning of an impending eruption. They are even more likely to get significant signals acoustic especially underwater so it doesn't surprise me, just the environment they are living in which is very hot and acidic.

assaultbravo14

Ohhh Science how we love thee!!! You impress us with your Facts and your Wisdom knows no bounds!!! We find no fault with thee. Science, You who controls all Truth and has never been proven wrong!!! You merely have become more Correct as time ushers on!!! Even when your Facts are found less correct than your new correct finding you have been and will always be correct. Even when you new correct finding is found less correct than your new new correct finding you have been and will always be correct. Whether you send out false facts, true facts, or could be true, might be true, will just say they are true facts. They are all facts and we know all facts are correct. Whether they be actually correct, not correct, less correct, somewhat correct, half correct or if you look at it this way correct. Correct is correct and facts are facts. Not to be challenged or disagreed with. The beauty of Science is at hand!!!! Science was correct and 100% factual when they said nothing could survive there. But now they have made a more correct statement that is more factual that things can and do survive there. Ohhh Science I am humbled at your knowledge. I am transfixed at your ability to never be wrong but only be more correct. How easily people can for so long believe less correctly that Pluto was a planet, then more correctly believe that it was only a moon. Then realize that believing it was a moon was actually believing less correctly and believing it was a planet was more correct. HOW DO YOU RUN THE MAAAAZZZZEEE OF TRUTH? We are so lucky to have such an excellent guide.....

I'm sure most of the larger animals flee when an eruption occurs and return later, and some are killed.  The attraction is the minerals that the volcano emits, which feed bacteria at the base of a huge pyramid of life there.  The place is food rich for the smallest, and thus larger and larger animals.  Eruptions interrupt life there, but don't seem to wipe it out entirely.  It returns as soon as things calm down. It's similar to a forest fire. Animals flee, but return as the plants grow quickly back.

my opinion...actually this may have a bad meaning, since the water arround volcano is toxic and not a normal habitat to those sharks...so what makes them go there could also be hunger since there no much medium size fish left in the ocean, sharks would go there to find food amongs species thats lives there ??

I was making a joke, its a thing called humor you are apparently devoid of. If one of them was capable of carefully lifting it like any non 13 year old girl should be it wouldn't matter how expensive it is. I know how much camera housings costs as I own some and regularly lift them all by myself you fucking chode lord. And Dumbbells aren't cheap they are generally about 80 cents a pound for decent weights and up.
Jonathan Morgan
Jonathan Morgan - 8 years ago
These guys are pros from Discovery finding sharks in underwater volcano plumes and you are wondering why just one guy doesn't lift the expensive camera equipment, with all sorts of other meters on it, alone? Seriously? There are fragile mirrors hanging off the thing. Pro level underwater camera housing costs easily $5,000 plus. I'm sure they simply want to be as careful as possible.

It's not like they're lifting dumbells.

You would come off as a massive asshole for not continuing along quietly. But then again I would just whip out my phone and show you that run can mean to move in a hurried or hectic way.

You're the retard who cant construct a literal sentence, I'm just fishing...

Back on track, the hammerhead has increased ampullae sensitivity to hunt out fish that usually cover themselves in sand such as stingrays
So with that in mind it would be more of a probable conclusion that the reason the hammerhead was drawn in in the first place was because the tremors or movement caused by the volcano where mistaken for their favourite meal.
Without taking into consideration the increase in temperature and fallout of an eruption if it was on movement alone it would be more likely for the hammerhead to be drawn towards it

GrassPossum
GrassPossum - 8 years ago
+WRLondon Running is actually a common term used in fishing circles. When a fish takes off with the bait for example it is referred to as running. However I didn't see anything clever in pointing out that Hammerheads "have been proven to detect electronics underwater" which is a nonsensical statement really. ALL SHARKS hunt by detecting electrical impulses in the water. The moments an animal or fish makes and their biological systems create minute electrical impulses which they detect, but the term electronics is another thing altogether and could mean a lot of things few of which have in fact ever been tried.
No but you tho

That take some testicular fortitude to go THERE to get footage. .. it's rumored that some of these NG photographers have a separate crew just to carry thier balls around. ...cause they are so big.

1Feet is equal to 5.89556465 corn seeds?
Randomturtle001
Randomturtle001 - 7 years ago
A foot is 30cm or 300mm (Roughly)
So if the seeds are roughly 6mm
300/6=50
So 50 seeds per foot.

+MaQuGo119 I coincidentally have an ear of corn my wife intends to cook for dinner and the kernal is 4mm x 6mm. so 6mm x roughly 6 seeds is 36mm and a foot is like 31mm so yeah. That's actually right. Doesn't seem like it would be tho...

And the bag used to weigh the camera down?  What happens to it?  I hope it's not just left there because that'd be adding to the trash we've needlessly left in the environment

The weights in the bag could have been blocks of salt. This is a very old trick. When the salt dissolves the package that it was used to sinks floats back to the surface. If that was the case then only the bag would be trash. If salt was used then the bag would have still been tied to the camera package and would have been recovered as well.

+CloudchaserShaconag A bag of weights in an underwater volcano isn't going to be causing extreme environmental or ecological damage. When you stop consuming packaged goods and throwing them in landfills you'll be morally able to complain about these people leaving a tiny bit of waste inside an active volcano.

+CloudchaserShaconag Nevermind what I just said, just saw the yellow bag... that's pretty retarded..

+CloudchaserShaconag Depends on what materials it's made, if it's a metal then most metals corrode really fast and disentegrate in SALT water. If there's plastic then that's fucked up..

Amazing footage. Of course the creatures receive a sign from the environment just like foxes use their magnetic sense to hunt and do ice fishing

+BeZZGix01 you know photoshop is primarily for static imagery right? if you wanted to make a baseless accusation at least say that it was some kind of special effects software

+BeZZGix01 I don't think GoPro can go to that depth in the water without it imploding. Doubt it's photoshop maybe its the lense
