Are you even allowed to use that track? Pretty sure it'd be copyrighted. Unless it's open source, but i'd be surprised if KSP uses open source music.

Kai Holdaway

While kayaking off La Jolla California I saw a thresher shark roll out of the water and its long tail slapped down under its body like it was trying to hit something, but not overhead like Simon Oliver’s science article indicates. I do not think a thresher can strike overhead because that would be spine-breaking. I believe a correct interpretation of the article’s video is that as the shark brakes with its pectoral fins, which throws its rear body and tail vertically forward, it  quickly twists sideways and delivers a fast sideways slap followed by a return slap and twist back again to face forward. This slap from the tail mimics the movement of a whip. The thresher only appears to be slapping overhead; really the thresher quickly twists to slap. Oliver states that threshers sometimes slap sideways. I think their long flexible tails must always slap prey in a sideways motion.

Kai Holdaway

Andrew Givens
Andrew Givens - 6 years ago
You are quite correct! Slowing the video down to 25% and watching closely, it is apparent that there is indeed a slight 'twist' of the rear body and that the tail is slapping sideways. There does still seem to be a slight upward curving of the spine, but it's clearly not directly upwards (axially) but at a more oblique angle - upwards and outwards at the same time, so it's definitely using the spine's lateral flexibility to achieve this swift motion.
Good spot and great assessment!

Does theory of evolution explain how species come up with such sophisticated designs? why this species 'decided' to develop a thresher tail to kill prey instead of some other design/mechanism?
In same context, is developing tools and technologies like automobiles, rockets etc is in same league as this species developed thrasher tail, only incredibly faster? Let me rephrase:- Is development of technologies by humans part of "evolution" ?
Sean Sharpe
Sean Sharpe - 9 years ago
No, our intelligence is an evolutionary trait of our species, but the specific things an individual learns is not passed on genetically to offspring. The things a person learns is not an evolutionary trait, but the intelligence TO LEARN is.
vbhatia06
vbhatia06 - 9 years ago
+Sean Sharpe Are you saying fact that humans (homo sapiens) have elevated intelligence  is not result of evolution?
Sean Sharpe
Sean Sharpe - 9 years ago
The traits I mentioned and spoke on are physical traits of each organism, not personality traits, or specific learned skills or information. A learned skill is not the same type of "trait" that is passed on through genetics.
vbhatia06
vbhatia06 - 9 years ago
+Sean Sharpe Based on what you said, does producing children later in the life (40s) have better chances of impacting "evolution" and 'passing' traits that one might have learnt/mastered in his/her life?
Sean Sharpe
Sean Sharpe - 9 years ago
Intelligence, abstract thought, the ability to recall information learned, language (to pass on ideas and share information), and many other traits we possess, are indeed products of evolution of our species. The technology is a side-effect of those and other traits we possess. Species do not "decide" to evolve. Whatever traits an organism possesses that makes it more likely to survive long enough to pass its genetic code on (produce offspring) than one without it, give that organism an advantage over the ones that lack it (they will more often die off before passing on their own code). Over time, these slight changes, which give survival advantages, will become a dominant trait in that species. Using the words design or creation, imply a designer or creator...neither of which have been shown to exist, or to be a necessity. Selection pressures are what dictate which traits are more likely to spread a genetic code of any given species (ability to find food and water, reproduce, and survive in a given ecosystem).

threshers may cause cavitation, which can result in extremely high temperatures and even sonoluminescence if the pressures and temperatures get crazy enough. i don't know if it's been proven or not yet, but there have been plenty of scientists that theorize the complete dissociation of oxygen and hydrogen during the phenomenon. so, it might not be that ridiculous.

Hi. Really?  No one knows that stuff, you were told in school and no teacher has ever proved it to you.  The only thing that makes evolution different from religion is getting grades based on the absorption of the curriculum, otherwise people would toss out evolution just the same.  Getting an F in school is a good reason to believe evolution is worth knowing, otherwise it really isn't.

Evolution doesn't matter when you clock in at your job, or raise your children or dealing with bank robbers or judging the guilty or helping the innocent.  Religion  IS!!! No matter how you cut the deck, after you get your diploma or degree, unless you are in the field of science, it really is garbage.

Religion matters everyday because it deals with people and issues and how to solve them. Evolution only says the strong will win and the weak will die.  That's it, meaning....war is inevitably the philosophy of evolution.  VIOLENCE is the only way to cleanse the non believers of evolution, just like you trolls are doing to me on this thread.  You can't prove it is real, so you want to shut me up by attacking me.  That's all you have.  IF you had better proof than calling gay, or calling me stupid, or calling religion absurd, you would provide that evidence rather than your Neanderthal like comments which reveal nothing and it certainly doesn't prove the evolution of YOUR thinking when you use words like CLUBS.

"Evolution real, religion stupid."  You guys sound like the cave men they taught you in the fairytale to believe.  Accept how come no one has dug up a caveman, or a club.  Or a human wearing a loin cloth.  These teachings come from the bible.  The cavemen evolution is insulting are Adam and Eve who wore loin clothes.  Black people and nations in early Africa used to wear loin clothes.  They are making fun of Christians, can't you see that.  Evolution is only a mockery of RELIGION.

Ight dude you keep believing what YOU WANT to believe. You say there is no evidence yet the evidence you write is based on a book you believe written by a supreme spiritual being that states the world is no older than 7000 years old. I hope you don't truly believe that and if so people are a lot more messed up in the head than I thought. Have fun being an idiot while the world moves on.

+KeenKwest nobody knows how life started.  What we DO know is that life mutates and changes over time.  That process is called evolution.  Evolution is not a theory about the origins of life, but rather, how life changes over time and it explains the great diversity of life found on the planet.  In terms of origins, there are various theories about the formation of the first amino acids, proteins, DNA/RNA, etc.  The big question is how the first self replicating structures came into being, along with a membrane to hold a cell together.  Some people say "hey, it must be god" and others have quite a number of interesting possibilities.  Either way, sounds like you would benefit from a basic course on Evolutionary Biology.  It is not the enemy.  You can believe that God created life, and that then life evolved.  That is what scientists believe who also are religious.  But this fear of/denial of evolution is rooted in a misunderstanding.  Evolution is real.  It is happening now.  The evidence is overwhelming and irrefutable.
KeenKwest
KeenKwest - 9 years ago
Let's be completely real hear.  Both Creationism and Evolution have no basis for a beginning.  You can't throw out creationism.  So what makes evolution true.  Observation science.

I'll give you three that science has.
Genesis 7/11 ;)
the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
Tectonic plates of cracks in the earth are OBSERVABLE.

Genesis 9:11-13
He makes a promise to man to not destroy all life with water again.  He set his bow int he sky to remember not to destroy us.  When we look in the sky, he looks on it to that it is his covenant.  This is OBSERVABLE.

Matthew 16:3
And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day; for the sky is red and lowring, O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times;Man is not given time.  We count hours, but if we don't have the sun, or star constellations, man doesn't have time.  We of course made instruments now, but they came originally from OBSERVING THE SUN.  This is observable.

-Leviticus 15:5
And whosoever toucheth his [diseased] bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.
This is observable science before evolution, that germs build up through night, more so if you don't shower or bathe before rest.  OBSERVABLE

And when he that hath an issue is cleansed of his issue; then he shall number to himself seven days for his cleansing, and wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in running water, and shall be clean.
-Leviticus 15:13  I believe tissue back then meant clothe.  This is very much practiced today, heavily so before fellatio is performed or sexual activities for the prevention of transferred bodily fluids. OBSERVABLE

1 Samuel 17:50  David and Goliath
My favorite story of observable science is true homage to Dennis the Menace. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.  Slew in the bible translates to a gruesome death, David became intense in battle and to put it nicely exploded the head of Goliath the giant.  Gravity.  The bigger they are the harder they fall. OBSERVABLE

Strongest became King (survival of the faithful) not fittest
He became famous
He became wealthy
He became educated
He became a judge
Weapons are effective
Gravity
Intelligence triumphs brute strength
Trust your plans, to accomplish goals
OBSERVABLE POINTS

Now, this is where you come in and say no it's not.  You are fucking gay. You are a dumb ass, and refer me to no books, no videos, no authors, just your opinion until the thread runs dry.  Since I took care of that, I guess you can be on your way now.  Have a nice day. buh bye:)
Benno Lyon
Benno Lyon - 9 years ago
the big difference between "evolution" and "creation" is a scientific theory isn't just.. you know, the imaginings of people or the feelings of faith people have.  Its based on observable evidence.  So, many people can look at actual evidence we can agree is in front of us, and try to infer explanations based on the evidence.  Creationism has no evidence.  This does not mean the theory of evolution explains everything, or that creationism is wrong, it just means there is zero evidence for creationism and overwhelming evidence supporting evolution.  (Antibiotic resistant bacteria is a good example of evolution within our lifetime).  So, those of us that require evidence, which is the foundation of reason and rational thought, go with evolution.

+KeenKwest Oh Evolve its such a dirty word :) How dare they mention it, so whats your fantastic theory to explain everything in nature, you think life just appeared after 7 days? You must be very selective about the books you read. Creationism is about as ignorant as it gets, go run with the other lemnmings until you actually have something educated to say instead of crying about evolution.

+CodenameChristmas Myths about Thresher Sharks

There are a number of myths associated with the thresher shark. Although (as discussed above) it does use its tail to strike and stun prey many factually inaccurate reports and myths have developed over the years which have greatly exaggerated the destructive power of thresher shark’s tail. A thresher shark will thrash its tail around to defend itself when caught and brought onto a boat, and divers have been injured by thresher shark’s tails. However, a thresher shark is not capable of decapitating a human being with its tail nor is it capable of breaking people’s backs.

"Famed big-game angler Frank Mundus, in his book Sportsfishing for Sharks, recounted a tale in which a longline fisherman off the Carolinas leaned over the side of his boat to examine something large that he had hooked, and was decapitated by the caudal fin of a thresher shark estimated to be 5 m (16 ft) long. The head supposedly fell into the water and was never recovered. This account is considered highly improbable by most authors.[8]"

Apparently this shit is pretty brutal too. One guy got decapitated because the thresher jumped out of the water near the boat to kill a fish (breaching) and the tail swished and decapitated the guy on the boat.

There's a shrimp that does this as well. It "punches" so fast that it causes the same effect.

Yeah I think you're right I mean.. nothing's impossible there are surprising things in nature but I think cavitation would be impressive enough already I don't think its very plausible that a shark would be able to break molecules with only a mechanical force.. Actually I don't even think any man made device breaks molecules using mechanical forces. At least unless I'm mistaken even commercial airliner turbofan engines can't achieve that at max power..

Thank you for pointing this out. This was just speculated by the researching biologist, but not proven. He thinks it might occur from a localized explosion or shockwave. There is always a possibility of a miscommunication too. It is really cool to get input from everyone and always appreciated!

Great video right up until it turned into sci-fi with the "breaking water into hydrogen and oxygen". Cavitation is a result of a dramatic drop in water pressure causing it to boil which gives you water vapor, not hydrogen and oxygen.
