What about the newly discovered mega duck that had a bite force of 600 tons was 50 metres long was 50 metres tall. It could probably destroy megalodon or anything that ever existed and it was able to fly you could hear it's roar from saturn.

Apex predator of all time? Pff, guess he never heard of Liopleurodon, or Dunkleosteus, or Basilosaurus, or Mosasaurus, or Livyatan Melvilli, or Humans. (Let's be frank. Humans are the most dangerous creatures ever)
Vlac Koku
Vlac Koku - 7 years ago
Lmao, another person thinks Hungry Shark games are proof that those creatures are stronger than Megalodon

First, Dunkleosteus wasn't that strong and big
Basilosaurus was extremely weak compared to Megalodon
Mosasaurus isn't as big as he appears in Jurassic World
Livyatan Melvillei Yes, probably the only one that is actually a threat to the Megalodon, i say its a 50/50 chance

Humans... APEX PREDATOR not MOST DANGEROUS CREATURES.

Lisa Tohill
Lisa Tohill - 7 years ago
Yes, the leather back turtle from that time period of around 15 to 16 million years ago was quite large. I have found a 21" humerus from one a few years back on the quarry. With a humerus that size it could easily be over 10 ft. or more. Modern adult leather backs range in size from 6 to 7 ft.

For all it's hype - depictions and estimates of Megalodon's size are probably exaggerated.  It undoubtedly was large - yet there are other creatures in the fossil record + alive today which have "large" teeth for their overall size.  The development of very large teeth can merely be in response to the prey they evolved to hunt and not necessarily in response to overall size.  Consider the saber tooth Tiger which despite massive canines was not significantly larger than Tigers today.  How about the Fang-tooth fish which lives in the deep ocean and which had considerable fangs - hence it's name.  These illustrate how what a creature consumes dictates the ultimate size and number of it's teeth.  So while a Megalodon was large - having large teeth may have been necessary to be able to take down whatever it primarily hunted.

Megalodon/Sharks - 8 years ago
Megalodon (/ˈmɛɡəloʊˌdɒn/ MEG-ə-lə-don, /ˈmeɪɡə-/ MAY-gə-; meaning "big tooth", from Ancient Greek: μέγας (megas) "big, mighty" and ὀδoύς (odoús), "tooth"—whose stem is odont-, as seen in the genitive case form ὀδόντος, odóntos)[1] is an extinct species of shark that lived approximately 23 to 2.6 million years ago, during the Cenozoic Era (early Miocene[2] to end of Pliocene[3]).The taxonomic assignment of C. megalodon has been debated for nearly a century, and is still under dispute. The two major interpretations are Carcharodon megalodon (under family Lamnidae) or Carcharocles megalodon (under the family Otodontidae).[4] Consequently, the scientific name of this species is commonly abbreviated C. megalodon in the literature.Regarded as one of the largest and most powerful predators in vertebrate history,[5] C. megalodon probably had a profound impact on the structure of marine communities.[6] Fossil remains suggest that this giant shark reached a length of 18 metres (59 ft),[3][7] and also indicate that it had a cosmopolitan distribution.[4] Scientists suggest that C. megalodon looked like a stockier version of the great white shark, Carcharodon carcharias.[8]The tooth of C. megalodon is the state fossil of North Carolina.

Ricky Gaskin
Ricky Gaskin - 8 years ago
If scientist wanted to they could use the DNA of fossilized dinosaurs to recreate them Megladon is definitely one of the creatures I would leave on my extinct list lol! I'm sure it's a wonderful looking creature just stay nice and wonderful in the oceanic grave yard lol! Also I'm sure their are fossils in the ocean deep under the ocean floor the movement of tectonic plates and the continental shelves moving over the centuries has probably made it impossible for scientist to reach especially knowing how high the pressure can get. Go to the bottom of an oceanic trench like marianus trench then dig into the floor and I'm sure you'll start finding fossils after 100 or 200 feet deep but honestly you'd probably die get crushed not just from the pressure but the rocks after the walls start dropping boulders lol!
Ricky Gaskin
Ricky Gaskin - 8 years ago
Vahlia メ come on now of course it wouldn't benefit them but it will benefit others you don't think some billionaire would pay through the nose just to make a massive park just to make money? of course they would and a scientist would give do the experiment for the money not all but one would I garuntee you.

Ollie marin well it was actually supposedly around 55 to 60 feet long once fully grown and while it may not have been mammal levels of intelligent it was still an apex predator that could hunt creatures smarter then it's self as it's main food source was many types of whales
Draconicus the Reaper
Draconicus the Reaper - 7 years ago
Dr. Steve Brule well actually the closest related shark alive today that you could compare the Megaladon to is the Mako shark...but even then it's not a perfect match as the Megaladon type of shark died out when the Megaladon did

It wasn't in the same genus as great whites. Not even in the same family. Carcharocles megalodon is classified in the family otodontidae while great whites (carcharodon carcharias) is classified in family lamnidae. This is disputed by some scientists but from what I know most agree on this classification.

there were dozens of genera and hundreds of species of mosasaur, so you'll have to be more specific. The largest mosasaurs challenged megalodon in length, but not weight, and would almost certainly have been slower and less adept in the water. So, 9/10 times it would go to megalodon, but that's not to say that a 45 foot sea lizard biting its side wouldn't hurt it (the phrase "sea lizard" is employed comically, I am well aware they were not lizards)

xD megalodon is 50-60 meters long fp
Luke Brown
Luke Brown - 8 years ago
The earliest estimations of Megalodon's length, by Bashford Dean, put Megalodon at 30 meters or about 98 feet, however more accurate muscle structure modeling brings it down to about 20m, Gottfried, Compagno, and Berman used tooth size to create a linear model of link, and of the specimens available to them found the largest to have been 15.9 meters long, or 43 feet, though larger teeth may exist. Using root width and crown height of the teeth, as was done contemporarily by Clifford Jeremiah and Kenshu Shermada, yielded a length of 16.5 meters and 15.1 meters respectively. The consensus is that megalodon was between 10 and 18 meters long (34-59 feet), though some researches still contest it was up to 25 meters in length. It certainly was not 50-60 meters, though 50-60 feet is perfectly reasonable.

They died because of the Pleistocene extinction
Luke Brown
Luke Brown - 8 years ago
that isn't a cause, it's a prolonged component of the extremely complex quaternary extinction event, the loss of flora and fauna, most notably megafauna like the megalodon, between the Pleistocene and Holocene epochs was caused by many different things, including natural climate change and human overhunting. The Megalodon also almost certainly went extinct long before this (a couple million years before, in fact) it perished near the end of the similarly named Pliocene era, which was part of the Cenozoic era, which includes the entirety of the Pleistocene and Holocene epochs (among others, if this is confusing, I suggest you Google a timeline), to wrap it in a neat bow the Megalodon probably dissapeared about 2.6 million years ago, the Quaternary and Pleistocene extinction events happened 12-9,000 years ago. Several factors have been proposed for the Megalodon's extinction, ocean cooling, sea level drops, loss of food supply and increases competition are foremost among them. Most paleontologists and paleobiologists would agree that all of these factors, and more combined to bring about the Megalodon's end.

My theory as to how they went extinct was their prey adapted and became too quick for the Megaladon to catch. And with a body mass that large, they must eat a ton. Due to the discrepancy of how much food they ate and how much they needed to eat, they were pretty much starved to death.

LISard It's mostly the very deep ocean that hasn't been discovered, but Megalodon was known as coastal hunter. There would have been several sightings and attacks. It wouldn't survive just in the very deep ocean. It needs to go up and hunt for bigger prey to survive. Face it, it's long dead.
Luke Brown
Luke Brown - 8 years ago
+LISard yeah... not really. 60 foot pelagic ultra-predatory fish would have surfaced by now, or at least their effects would be noticed, not to mention the lack of adequate food sources for a predator that size in the pelagic zone, and the cooler modern ocean temperatures. it is theoretically possible for an isolated remnant population (of only a couple of individuals) to exist somewhere in the depths, but very, very, very doubtful, and there is no evidence to support it so it is just conjecture.

well, that's where your wrong. human kind does not infact ' rule the world' as some would put it. we merely inhabit the earth. we destroy the earth we do not rule it. to think we do would be completely narcissistic. the dinosaurs once 'ruled the earth' and like all things to inhabit this planet they met their end. our species had a beginning and so it will have an end. nothing lasts for ever, especially not something as fragile as humankind. we will probably be the first species on this planet to cause our own extinction. besides a megoladon is an apex preditor if it did live in the sea to this day humans would not dare trifle with it. call it self preservation.

Filiform dimensions
Filiform dimensions - 8 years ago
+Cierra Rouse I think they would flee. It's way too risky to attack a megalodon. I'd think they would be afraid to put themselves in that situation unless it was unavoidable. They usually use a specific method to hunt and gather smaller prey by charging and tackling, but I just don't see that method being effective. Based on their diet, I believe it had great speed for it's size as it hunted agile creatures as well. Whales were a regular part of megalodons diet, and aside from humpback whale calves some very particular orca manage to snatch, they don't actually hunt adult whales. Also, the bite and jaw difference is substantial.

Abtin Nassaji
Abtin Nassaji - 8 years ago
nope. ur completely wrong lol. megalodons are about 60+ feet. way bigger than a blue whale. the reason they are extinct is because there was nothing big enough for them to eat.. blue whales are 30-50. megalodons are +60. they were huge! look at teeth fossils...

101ified - 8 years ago
+Cierra Rouse Pfff just because orcas are intelligent doesn't mean it's super smart. If they see a fking megalodon they would run the fk away. Also a megalodon is as big as a whale. Orcas would be too scared of something that size to fight it. If it actually happened the orcas would be running and the megalodon would be chasing.
Cierra Rouse
Cierra Rouse - 8 years ago
That's a null argument, but a better one is Megalodon vs Orca.
Orca is currently the apex predator of the ocean, incredibly intelligent, hunt in pods, very strong, big bodies...
an Orca can grow to 30+ feet, couple that with 10+ others and you have a team that could take down a megalodon shark... a 50+ foot shark wouldn't be as agile as the Orca is. Nor do I believe it would have the intelligence the Orca does. Plus they didn't hunt in packs (assuming because no other sharks do). A sneak attack would work in the Megalodons favor, but being pursued by an Orca pod... it would stand 0 chance.

There existed hundreds of species of mosasaur ranging in size from 3 feet to 56 feet long. They also had a span of existence of nearly 100,000,000 years. I know of none of them for which there exists evidence of predation against Megalodon's (the largest Mosasaur, Mosasaurus hoffmanni, at 56 feet long would have been as long as Megalodon's but would have weighed less and probably been slower) also the time in which Mosasaurs were extant ended right around the same time Megalodon's came into being, Megalodons continued to live for tens of millions of years after all Mosasaurs were extinct, and for that whole time there is little doubt that they were a, if not the, apex marine predator.

Megalodon may be the most sensationalized creature in all of paleontology (thanks to the media). A handful of teeth and verterbrae and apparently it's defintive proof that there's an 80 foot long supersized great white shark that swam around firing lasers out of its eyes or whatever. I don't dispute that Megalodon was a very large shark but the hyperbole is frustrating when we know so little.

+alejandra pan Scientists should have already estimated that these kind of sharks can't survive over a certain depth of ocean, just like the limit depth of a blue whale is about 500m or so. Otherwise, they wouldn't have label it "extinct" on their list.
I find it plausible to think that these sharks can go much deeper than the whale. Since at a certain point, any living being would be crushed to death.
It is possible that there are creatures out there that can go very deep into the ocean due to a survival mechanism on their body, but those are the type of creatures that haven't been discovered yet.

If I had to pick one thing to believe that was real from back then I would pick these guys. I think the reason they died was because they killed everything, each other until only the biggest one was alive and it just couldn't feed enough to stay alive. The waters it lived in wouldn't have had the life to sustain it, even if they did evolve and adapt they wouldn't be mega anymore, maybe Jaws size. they would have evolved to a smaller size to compensate for the lose of major food sources and the Ocean changing. As they said we can only find Teeth and the odd bone, meaning they most likely didn't survive the continental shifts and became trapped in small land oceans that soon dried. The life of a sea creature back then was, get to a large body of water with food or grow a set of legs.
JR Black
JR Black - 8 years ago
Well somewhat. . Scientists say that Megalodon went extinct because ,All the big creatures and Whales move to the colder climate Waters, which science said that Megalodon was a Warm Water Creature. .so who knows. . Maybe the other creatures got smart and adapted to cold climate Waters to Avoid The Megalodons.

Simon Eriksson - 9 years ago
I would argue that the prehistoric Megalodon is actually, due to millions of years of evolutions, the Great White shark that we know today. It just became smaller, because the teeth comparison between the actual Megalodon and a Great White are extremely similiar despite the size difference. So with that in mind, the Megalodon was probably just an upscaled Great White. I've heard scientists debate about wether to call it the latin name "Charcharodon Megalodon" or "Charcharocles Megalodon". Charcharodon would fall under the same category as the Great White (which latin name is Charcharodon Charcharias). Charcharocles would indicate that the Megalodon would have been an entirely different type of shark, but seeing as how the teeth's look allmost the same I find that hard to believe.

The seas became shallower, some marine mammals like whales also became smaller, much of Megalodons prey disappeared during the course of millions of years, which is why I think it is fair to say that the Megalodon still exist today, but in the size of the Great White.

I also don't think that the Great White or for that matter any other type of predatory shark has a "max size" they can grow to. We all know that predatory fishes usually tend to be larger when there's much prey to feed off. A great white has a potential to grow to massive sizes, and I still think they could (if the conditions were right) grow to the size of a Megalodon.

There was a news-report from Australia (the video is up here on youtue) which shows a huge (supposedly) Great White breaching the water next to a shark cage. The shark is in the background, and the cage nearer the camera and even then, the head of the shark is massive and looks allmost to be the same size as the cage or even slightly bigger. Some has questioned if it actually is a Megalodon or a huge Great White.

Scientists can't prove the Megalodon is extinct because they have not explored every part of the ocean. #Dumb Scientists
Estarile
Estarile - 9 years ago
Where are the unfossilized six inch teeth? How could a shark the size of a frickin bus that hunted whales in mostly shallow water hide from an increasingly patrolled ocean? Where is megalodon getting the food to fuel its 70 foot body? Why hasn't a young megalodon, strayed into coastal waters?

Saying that we haven't explored everywhere and thus megalodon mug exist and scientists are dumb for saying otherwise proves you to be the dumb one. You have no proof megalodon exists, there is plenty of proof its long dead.

Shark skeletons are notoriously hard to find due to being made of cartilage(the stuff your ears are made of), and not bone. The chances of an average fossils (read bone) forming are pretty rare, but for cartilage to fossilize is crazy rare. I think there are like three locations world wide that had the right sediment content to preserve shark fossils.

Estarile

Unfortunatly a single unconfirmed eyewitness story has nothing on the lack of evidence of a living megalodon. As other have said, it would hang out in shallow seas and at the top of the water column. Megalodon was also the size of your average bus, and like any shark shed teeth like we shed skin cells. It's highly unlikely that it still exits in our time.

You must be talking about coelacanth, you can't compare a 60 cm fish that mainly eat smaller fish and live in the deep with a 50 tons - 59 feet sharks that prey upon whales.

And megalodon grows up to the largest I've seen is about 125ft I know this from some satalights sorry for my spelling again but it is around the size of 4 school buses that are 40ft
Harold Hecuba
Harold Hecuba - 9 years ago
+Nathaniel LEACH > For a supposed scientist, you are once again, NOT VERY PRECISE. That is true of your math, as it is true of your spelling when it comes to species such as the Coelacanth, things in your alleged area of expertise. 4 school buses, at 40 feet in length EACH, would add up to 160 feet, not 125 feet. YOU ARE NOT A SCIENTIST; you are clearly not even a high school graduate.

I have no idea where U got the reference but the biggest animal that ever lived is blue whale which is 98 - 120 feet and megs biggest speciment are only 59 feet...maybe someday they can get a bigger example but untill then let's stop guessing and stick to the fact that it grows up to 59 feet...okay.!?

Megalodons still live people they have been staying deep in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans they are still alive I'm a marine biologist I know this stuff I've encountered one in Australia we thought the ceacalauth went extinct sorry if I wrote the name wrong but they are still living and there was a jet that was never supposed to get lossed with that good technology but it went missing in our waters so why can't the oceans hide our megalodon and that's not how they look they have bumps on the back and have a point on their side fins sorry people I'm extremely tired today but they still live and for you people out there please listen this is very serious information and thank you for your time to read all this

OMG thank you! Somebody thinks! Even if they dies of some sort of mass extinction, some could of just gone deeper into the ocean and then reproduced. Like you said. If you can lose a jet in the ocean, you can lose a species in the ocean. There are a bunch of undiscovered creature in the ocean! More then on land! (We think).

It could be speculated the Meg couldn't be in the diving range of the giant squid, which hunts avoids Sperm whales that get them, so military subs could go that deep long enough to follow and record Meg or even go down that far to wait for one of them to make sonar contact.

May I also point out modern Subs may be able to out dive the Meg too and no way give off any indication Meg could sense that it was a whale, but it would be an interesting assignment for a crew to verify and track a Meg down for research purposes.

+Katherine Ann I find it funny how people say that "OUR GOD IS THE TRUE RULER, HE LOVES US" and stuff like that. Why? Because other relligions think the same about our GOD. And let's not forget about religions that existed waaay before the Christians (like lets say the gods that egyptians believed in). For me religions are made up, but still I can not say that I don't believe in GOD, I was just taught that way. If there truly is GOD (or even gods) then he (they) doesn't necessarily look or do things, the way we people think he does...

And yes, I know my explanations are really bad, that is why I suggested articles, books, and documentaries. I am only in the beginning of my spiritual journey, and I do in fact read the Bible every night (I have a Chronological one) and I am only so young, so if you'd like a better explanation then I suggest books, documentaries, going to church or talking to someone with more knowledge than me

+Fashion By Katherine It describes in detail in the Bible the correct methodology for sacrificing the darn birds. It's in Leviticus. It's not at all metaphorical.

The Laws of Thermodynamics (science) actually directly contradict the notion of the omnipotent God described in the Bible. Matter and energy cannot be created or destroyed.

Science gives you more detailed evidence for how the world works, complete with testable phenomena, laws of the natural world, theories actually FULLY SUPPORTED by evidence and NOT CONTRADICTED by evidence, no silly metaphors for this and that.

There is no evidence of the world-wide flood that the Bible describes (there were many floods throughout prehistory, but none that encompassing), no Ark has been found (certainly not one that could support even a fraction of Earth's animal population taken in pairs), etc, etc.

How do you address the purely ecological issues with a flood covering everything? With three words:

God did it.

Doesn't matter if there were fossils dated to "when the flood began". That DOES NOT prove a global flood.

By the way, where's the evidence that kangaroos swam from Mount Arafat to Australia? And how about the pandas and most every other animal? Why does the evidence support the theory of evolution and not your creation story?

I'll tell you why: your creation story is pure bunk.

Pray for yourself.
Katherine Clardy
Katherine Clardy - 9 years ago
+Mark Branham actually, there is scientific evidence for the flood. scientists found fossils of animals, humans and plants that were dated around the time the flood began. As Christians, there is little we understand about God's doings (and the birds, a lot of the stuff in the Bible is not literal. it represents different stuff in modern today) Its people like you that I pray for, and I really do. You'll be in my prayers from heer on out. (also, if you'd like more answers than i can provide, I can recommend some reading. there are lots of great books and documentaries that have much more proof of how science confirms the Bible) :) <3 Love you! Take care

+Fashion By Katherine You won't do anything. Talking to yourself won't do any good. You might as well ask Santa for his sleigh.

Let's see, what's also in the Bible? Oh, you can "purify" yourself by burning birds. You can live after dying by talking to a God who never reveals himself. Apparently, snakes can talk to humans. Apparently, people in the Stone Age packed two of each animal species into a massive wooden ship.. without regard to the sort of diseases they were bringing aboard and with technology unavailable in the Stone Age! And don't start that the ocean animals were allowed to swim and didn't have to be brought aboard! IT WAS A GLOBAL FLOOD! Do you have any idea how problematic a GLOBAL FLOOD would be for any water animal that lives in a certain environment- certain salinity, pH, food sources, etc???

Why is there no scientific evidence for anything like that? Explain that!

But whatever happens, something good comes out of it, as long as you believe :)))
Katherine Clardy
Katherine Clardy - 9 years ago
+AfricanHobbitHunter Oh I'm not trying to convince you of anything, just explaining :) Those are works of the devil, not God. But God is what ends it, rewards people, and brings the dead ones to heaven. And the flood was because after the apple was eaten from the tree of knowledge, man began to sin so that angered God. So he told Moses to bring all the species, male and female, ad his family so the earth's population could restart and become good again.

To those saying we are big enough, take this for example:
In current life, the Blue Whale is 30 meters long compared to a 15cm wide human that is 1.7 meters tall.

In prehistoric life, take this: Amphicoelias Fragillimus is estimated to be 60 meters long.

We would have heard reports from ships and vessels about a large shark swimming in the water.

Great White Sharks are older than humans and still there
Luigi Gaskell
Luigi Gaskell - 10 years ago
The theory of Carcharocles megalodon growing smaller overtime and eventually becoming Carcharodon carcharias (The Great White) is rather problematic since great whites were already around during the same temporal range as C.megalodon (I.e They were alive at the same time).
MegaBspark
MegaBspark - 10 years ago
the genus charcaradon covers sharks such as great white, mako, basking shark and some others including megalodon, read somewhere or maybe saw it here scientists believing megalodon is more closely related to the mako than the great white, so yeah you're right about it not being a direct decendant but still looks more like a giant GW than anything else.
Luigi Gaskell
Luigi Gaskell - 10 years ago
Funny you should mention that, the closest living relative of Carcharocles megalodon is the modern Great White. A Great white has more in common with Megalodon than any other shark. Though I don't think they're the same animal. They are certainly very closely related but I don't think they're the same animal that simply grew smaller overtime. It's kind of hard to do paleontological studies on sharks and cartilaginous fish in general since their skeletons don't fossilize. I think megalodon may have left descendants that still haven't been discovered by the scientific world, but I don't think the great white is the direct descendant of megalodon.
MegaBspark
MegaBspark - 10 years ago
maybe it didn't, maybe it got smaller through evolution because of its main food source dying out and began to rely on smaller fish and mammals eventually becoming what we call a great white.
Luigi Gaskell
Luigi Gaskell - 10 years ago
I think the main cause for Carcharocles megalodon's extinction was the disappearance of its main food source. A large predator like megalodon can't sustain itself solely on fish, it needs to hunt larger animals that can provide more nutrition (like whales). Megalodon relied mostly on whales to keep it sustained, but the time came when the whales could no longer survive in specific waters, this means they need to migrate to colder waters. A whale's blubber can insulate it from the freezing temperature of the new waters, but a shark like megalodon doesn't have the ability to insulate itself, this means that it can't follow the whales into the freezing waters. With its main source of food gone, megalodon eventually went extinct.

It is said to believe that the shark went extinct due to the evolution of the ocean itself, the ocean got colder and when they were still alive they could withstand warm water, and other reasons. Those who believe that the shark is somewhere in a trench farther down the ocean is obsurd, considering the farther you go own the colder it gets.

Technically, you are correct. However, in some trenches deeper in the ocean, such as say the Mariana Trench, have sulfur vents which heat the water, making it suitable a suitable enviorment for sharks and other forms of life.

Apex predator of all time? On sheer size alone? I call bullshit. Large size actually restricts predators in what they can eat. Megalodon may have been a powerful predator, but if it has to spend more and more energy chasing and eating progressively smaller, more agile prey animals it's going to go extinct.

Besides T-rex wasn't even the largest theropod. Giganotosaurus was longer and Spinosaurus, the largest theropod on record currently at about 50+ feet

+EvilCleric No, you're off again. When people say "of all time", they mean that there hasn't been any predator in the history of the earth who was as dominant as species "X". Mega is a strong candidate for that title, and yes, size is the fundamental factor. However, it is not the ONLY factor.
The sperm whale fails to hold that title despite its size simply because it is too picky in how it eats, virtually only eating small fish and the occasional giant squid. The mega ate whales by BITING THEM IN HALF.
At the end of the day, the most dominant species of the entire history of the earth, land or sea is homo sapiens sapiens.
Of course, you're right that you can change the context and setting and make a point that neither man nor the mega was an apex predator. Example, a mega was useless once it stranded itself to shore. Likewise, a man is useless without weapons or traps. yadda yadda...but, i'm not going to split hairs like that.
Master Asia
Master Asia - 9 years ago
Did the phrase "apex predator OF ALL TIME" just bounce off your skull? The apex predator that survives the longest is the one that gets to be called the apex predator of all time.

And if sheer size alone determines that, then the blue whale which eats krill and mackerel would be the greatest apex predator by that logic.
aattitude
aattitude - 9 years ago
+EvilCleric lol 55 feet long is INCREDIBLY huge still!!
The "apex predator" does not mean "most successful" predator, numb skull. It means while it was alive, it had no natural predators.
It is likely that both livyatan melvillie and the mega were the two apex predators at the time. Id probably agree livyatan melvillie was more successful, simply because whales tend to move more efficiently than sharks. Both were at the top, nonetheless.
Master Asia
Master Asia - 9 years ago
+Nathan Pak Except it actually grew between 50 to 60 feet, the 70 foot margin so many fans love to erroneously throw about actually came from an error in scaling jaw to body ratio (same things has actually happened with multiple pliosaur specimens). Only a few animals are known to breach the 70 foot mark like Shastasaurus (which being a marine reptile, conveniently left a 70+ foot skeleton)

Weight and jaw power scale with the size of the prey which considering it ate whales, was needed. However there have been fossils found where the whale survived long enough to heal from these wounds so don't think the C.Meg had some mythical 100% successrate at hunting. No predator ever has done that.

C.Meg was also hardly the unrivaled king of the ocean during it's time, it shared it's home with livyatan melvillie, a giant carnivorous sperm whale.with an equally massive jaw and surprisingly enough a very similar bite force strength (again it needed it because it ate the same food as c.meg) And in a fight between these two monsters, that high bite force is going to matter more on a creature with a cartilaginous skeleton. However that is neither here nor there. Honestly the winner would be whoever got the first bite in meaning both c.meg and livyatan won and lost.

However that's beside the point. Size does not dictate the success as an apex predator, which is what I was saying earlier. What dictates it being the apex predator of all time is how long that particular predator remains successful, which for Carcarodon, is absolutely unrivaled at about 13.5 million years, surviving from the mid Oligocene to the early Pleistocene. Size only means it had big food to feed it. Prey became smaller and more agile, on top of the dropping temperature is what finally killed of the megalodon.

And no, don't try to sell me that "they might still be out there." bs. Sharks like that would stay near their prey aka whales. And no they can't be in the deepest depths of the ocean because a big active shark like that needs a lot of oxygen and the lower you go, the less oxygen there is per square meter of water.
Nathan Pak
Nathan Pak - 9 years ago
Megalodon grew to a length of 70 feet. The animal's weight was 100 tones. The bite force was 5x powerful than that of T-Rex and it is the biggest and most fearsome apex predator that ever and will exist!

Meg can't do that and would have had to chase down prey big enough to make the energy pay off worth it.

I don't get the arguement that the Megalodon is the ultimate apex predator when compared to the T-Rex overall. In the ocean, yes, obviously the Megalodon is the dominant force. On land though, the T-Rex is clearly the dominant predator. If the Megalodon were stuck on land then I'd put my money on the T-Rex 10 out of 10 times. So the arugement makes no sense. Clearly, Megalodon is apex for water and T-Rex for land.

+Theycallmesomething When you say that, take this for example:
The jaws of the first ever Megalodon fossil found might have been a sub-adult.

John Smith
John Smith - 9 years ago
Unless you know of teeth 10 and almost half a inch? That would be the equivalent of a 82 foot shark or 25 meter and now 20 meter is the larger estimates right now a 7 inch Megalodon tooth would equal a 55 foot Megalodon but since common teeth are around 5 to 6 inches than it would be this 5 inch=39.3 feet 12.0 meters the size of a T-Rex but this is a small average size so since that Megalodon is by far the fucking size of a t-Rex even by sue anyway 5.5 a 43.3 foot Megalodon or 13.2 meters a 6 inch would be 47.3 feet 14.4 meters 6.5 would be a 51.3 foot or 15.6 meters and again a 7 inch 55.3 feet or 16.8 meters now there are only two or maybe even more i haven't researched about teeth that are 7 and a half inches well close really one a seven 42/100 and a seven 62/100 the 62/100 is the largest one being a half quarter or very close to half quarter (12.5/100) over seven and a half which would equal one foot so back to what I was doing a 7 and a half would equal a 18 meter Megalodon or 59.3 Megalodon making it 59 feet equal to the size of the largest mossaurusus to ever exist (grew 10-15+ meters) and already larger than the largest livyatan (17.5 meter) and with that extra half quarter that equals a foot or 11 inches makes it exactly 60.2-3 feet or 18.348 meters or 18.379 being larger than the largest livyatan and mossaurus and one of the largest predators and 20 feet larger than the largest T-Rex but from looking at the picture and what it says which I think it said it grew 70 feet is inaccurate but still 50% larger is HUGGGGEEEEEE so I myself and you and the person were all wrong and in fact the largest Megalodon to ever exist grew 60.2-3 feet and that Megalodon was massive compared to T-Rex!

MegaLodon vs Godzilla.
Megalodon can rip GodZilla's leg and trip it over but GodZilla's legs are are coated with strong, padded, armored skin. Godzilla can fight under water but the Megalodon can do under water and shoot up and bite Godzilla's face and stun it for a while then pull its tail so it topples and hits it head which can break the skull or damage its brain if there is enough force. Godzilla can grab the Megalodon and headlock it and break its windpipe or claw at its gills or chest. Godzilla can slam the Megalodon and bash its cartilage skull on the land or Godzilla can step on its head and pull its fins or tail and rip it off and be a the Megalodon with it. This is a good match but after this speculation the MegaLodon will win.

People realize the problems and know they can't change anything due to how powerful the people providing messages already are.

Don't act like your country doesn't have problems either. They're probably just kept more secret and aren't publicized because your country doesn't focus on that as much as we do. Put the same kind of tv power into your country and you will find a bunch of idiots like here in the america.

+Christian Barajas American TV wouldn't be so fucked up if there was no audience for it.
Sensation beats science every single time.
If somebody mentions the word America to me, this is what comes to my mind:

1) obesity, McDonalds
2) middle class poverty, capitalism
3) no public health care

I don't have a problem with American people. I do have issues with your government and media

+Autumn Nuzman It seems that those poor representatives always make the news, and seem to amuse a large part of the American society with this kind of attention seeking TV shows. Not all of you are the same of course, and I don't hate everything about America
Autumn Nuzman
Autumn Nuzman - 10 years ago
It's not that Americans are all acting that way, it's just that poor representatives are portraying us that way. Although a lot of Americans should wise up about the representatives they choose. And we're not all obese, or anorexic, some of us are average weight, it's just that the weird ones are somehow the ones who become famous.

+therobloxuser12
I agree with you on that. It's similar to me bashing muslims because I have a problem with Islam. The real problem is in the message, not in the people. But clearly the message affects the people badly and I feel the same about the USA. All these attention seeking tv shows, fast food addiction in an obese society and people refusing to take care of each other with a national health care system ($$$)

Call it superficial but that is my view of America

I am going shark cage diving in south africa and I am looking for scientific information about behavior of great white sharks.

Not some retarded cartoon with the purpose of selling it to an audience. Americans do it to everything, for commercial purposes. A simple game of wrestling was commercialised into "catch" with Hulk Hogan getting pissed off if you tell him how fake it is. The movie "jaws" was commercialized as well and led to a worldwide misconception of the behavior of sharks

I'm okay with the capitalist attitude of Americans, looking for sensation and trying to sell everything. But it's a big shame that they tell lies about nature for commerical purposes
. Every fucking American documentary on youtube has lies, sensation and horror stuff in it

+GojiFan98 LightOppressor Ha! Do you always take little jokes in an internet comment thread so seriously? But since you want to get nitpicky about it, Gipsy Danger would have made minced meat out of the early iterations of Godzilla. Case closed.
Galaxeus
Galaxeus - 9 years ago
Showa 50 meters. Early Heisei 80 meters. Middle-late heisei- 100 meters. Millenium 50- 55 meters. Final wars- 100 meters. Zilla- 60 meters. Legendary- 108.2 meters.
Galaxeus
Galaxeus - 9 years ago
Bruh, I don't need to look at size charts. You forget I'm a Godzilla fan. I know just about everything there is to know about Godzilla. So of course, I know the sizes. Heisei era would be too much for Gipsy Danger. So would millennium.

+GojiFan98 LightOppressor Godzilla has grown over the decades; when he made his debut in 1954, he was just about 50m (about 164 feet) tall http://godzilla.wikia.com/wiki/File:SIZE_MATTERS_-_HOW_GODZILLA_HAS_GROWN_OVER_THE_YEARS_-Plus_Zilla_Name_Change_Evidence-.png

It's not really fair to compare T.rex to Megalodon one was land based and other was water based. Also most marine predators are often larger than land predators so it's a bad comparison it's like comparing a Lion to a Great white Shark.
