it's still not something you want happening to you (especially on vacation), but it's not such a big deal. you REALLY have to watch out for jellyfish and stingrays, because they're everywhere and it hurts like HELL....believe me.

Better to stick to the water parks when you guys visit Florida beaches.
I lived in West Africa for a while and sharks abound there, but almost no one uses the beaches. I also doubt all shark attacks there even get properly counted.
Still, we were always a bit leery when going into the water.
If you ever go there, it's beautiful and you can have miles of beach all to yourself. Trouble is, if the sharks don't get you, there's a good chance jellyfish will.

Just for clarification: We are a much greater threat to sharks than they are to us (and by far more lethal!) . Any protection like e.g. in South Africa is a good thing and will just "maybe" help to protect this world's ecosystem.
