Whale Shark

The new, extended, HD version of this video is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6lpDsBYX6A Thailand's Richelieu Rock is a "hot spot" for whale shark sightings and on 4th March 2005 I was lucky enough to capture the World's largest fish in all its glory. This female whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is missing the top of her tail and would be easy to identify again. The music is "Freefall Into The Blue" by Mark Ellison. I was diving with http://www.SantanaPhuket.com More Similan Islands videos on http://www.bubblevision.com/underwater-videos/Similan-Islands/ Full transcript of the commentary: "At Thailand's Richelieu Rock, a whale shark makes a rare appearance. This is no whale but rather the world's largest fish. Whale sharks can grow up to 12m long, although unconfirmed reports circulate of giants of up to 18m long. This female is about the average size of 8m. There is little to match the awe inspired by an encounter with a whale shark, and for many divers this is the pinnacle of their underwater experience. Their 3000 tiny teeth are rarely used. When feeding they hold their mouths open and feed on plankton, fish eggs and small marine creatures. Ridges down the whale shark's back are reminiscent of those on leopard sharks' backs and like the leopard shark, the whale shark is harmless to humans. She has lost the top part of her tail, perhaps due to an attack by a predatory shark when she was a youngster, or possibly a collision with a boat's propeller. The shark's fins act like the ailerons on an aircraft's rudder and wings, helping steer it gracefully through the water. The abstract pattern of spots and stripes gives the whale shark some camouflage from above. Despite being 4 inches thick, the whale shark's skin can become infected if it's mucous covering is broken, so although it might be tempting to touch or even try and hitch a ride on a whale shark, this practice is highly discouraged. For a long time whale sharks were thought to be oviparous, in other words, hatching from eggs laid by the mother. However since 1995, females have been discovered containing hundreds of hatched pups, proving that the young complete their development inside the mother's body before birth. Whale sharks do not reach sexual maturity until they are 25 years old, and pregnancies are few and far between, so they are vulnerable to fishing pressures. Shark fin soup is seen as a delicacy and status symbol in many Asian markets. A single whale shark fin can fetch tens of thousands of dollars in some Chinese restaurants. Until this culture changes or legislation intervenes, whale shark numbers are likely to continue falling."

I got to swim with one over the summer, greatest thing i've done with my life. Snorkelling with them at the surface is pretty standard in the places of the world where they aggregate but scuba diving in the deep must be even better. Do you recall how far down this was?

Another beautiful creature of planet Earth, another awe inspiring being filled with mystery and interesting features. And yet we're bringing it closer and close to meet it's demise, with our greedy behavioural patterns. Economic interest, eh? Well, what about the life conservative interest of this symbiotic relationship of which we all share on this beautiful round globe, we all hold so dear and are ultimately dependant upon in order to continue our survival.

Millions of years ago, a group of sharks decided the violent way of survival was not the way to do. They left the pack, and went on this peaceful, quiet, and serene existence. Watching the whale shark move is just like therapy, you can lose all your stress just be witnessing how peaceful an animal it is. We should all do our part in insuring the whale shark is, and forever will be, protected.

Whale sharks are weird. They're spotted, which makes him look like some sort of fat underwater spotted cat. Also, if its a fish, why call it whale SHARK?? I mean you could call it whale fish because whales are big and since its a big fish it would make sense to call it that. Well, I guess I'll hang out with my blue whale buds to find the bloop source

It's sad to think that in the next 50 or less years a great deal of ocean life may become extinct due to ocean acidification. The pH level of the ocean has always been relatively constant but is now rapidly decreasing becoming more and more acidic and beautiful creatures like this Whale Shark will likely not survive if the Protists in the ocean die off from the acidification.

Thats true. They have electronmagnetic field receptors ( ampullae of lorenzini ) and motion detecting canals inside the sharks head. Detecting blood one part per million of seawater. Not ta mension the lateral line which picks up vibration. But As a last resort they do bite to determine wether the prey is worth consuming. A great design what hasn't changed for millions of yrs. If i got attacked by a shark. i'd try to put it in tomic imobility.
Bubble Vision
Bubble Vision - 11 years ago
They generally use their senses of sight, smell, taste and electro-detection to asses whether something is prey before actually taking a bite.

You need to listen to bubblevistion. Sharks play a vitel roll in the oceans ecosystem. Every animal helps another animal to survive. For insance. If plankton was to die out lowest on the food chain. All the fish would start to die. Then the predators what eat the fish would start to die and so fourth. Sharks are not interested in people They perfer high fat content like blubber. Sadly they have to investigate prey buy taking abite.

If you remove the apex (top level) predator from an ecosystem such as the ocean, the stability and balance is lost. For example if you remove big sharks from an area, then rays and smaller sharks can flourish uncontrolled and wipe out all the stocks of smaller fish. This has already happened in some areas. Google "Why do we need sharks?" for examples... How would we breed whale sharks? I don't think they've ever even been observed by humans mating. There are a few in tanks (that shouldn't be).
needtruth69
needtruth69 - 11 years ago
i like whale sharks cause they don't have teeth but i don't like sharks that have teeth. we can breed more whale sharks. Just kill the sharks that have teeth and breed more whale sharks and other sharks that are toothless. i don't understand why you said requiem sharks are important.

Bad idea. Requiem sharks (the ones you mean) serve a very important role in maintaining the balance of the ocean ecosystem. If you kill all of these apex predators it will accelerate the death of everything else in the oceans. Sadly this is currently happening anyway because of the relentless demand for shark fin soup. Shark attacks on humans are extremely rare. Don't buy into the "man-eating killing machine" hype peddled by silly scary movies and sensationalist documentaries.

@p0rcelaing0d on the contrary, some animals like the fox can be seen as mythological creatures such as guardians or demons, or even gods, they have respect for alot of animals, however they had to eat and doing this is just tradition of the many many centuries of survival have taught them, however its a tradition that is no longer necessary for survival

Whale shark is a fish, not a shark as it mentions... It should not be in shark fin soup, but fish soup. Anyway, the fin makes terrible solution for hungry jacks. Check this out! @MysticWhizz Not at all because I know they are generally safe to dive with, but I was so excited at seeing my first whale shark that I used all of my air in about 25 minutes. At that stage I was absolutely desperate to see a whale shark. People were even teasing me that I hadn't seen one yet in 1000 Andaman dives. If you gently stroked its chin it would probably just ignore you, but it might just swim away if it got stressed by divers being around.

@emporer15 Sharksuckers are much smaller & more streamlined than people, & whale sharks are completely used to their presence, & may even get some benefit from being cleaned by them. Totally different to big, clumsy humans, which are totally alien to them. We have no way of knowing how much they are stressed by divers riding them, but we know that it might damage the mucous covering on their skin, thereby predisposing them to infection. Also their natural feeding habits might change.

@MultiSnakevenom wow, for serious? Whales have bones in their fins, bones that are only present in mammals, they also give live birth and produce milk for their young, another trait only mammals have. It breathes air. It can stop swimming for periods of time and hold still-which by the way no fish other than the nurse shark can. Do I need to keep going? I can elaborate on bones if you want me to. Bone structure is very important for mammals.

@waterproofvideo1 It's often called vignetting. That rig (Sony VX2000 in Gates housing) had it quite badly. In these shots I'm already zoomed some way in from full wide angle. To get rid of them completely I would have to zoom more, but didn't want to for this subject. They could be removed in post production, but this clip is from an old DVD I made that was mostly viewed on CRT TVs where overscan would crop the edges anyway.

Man doesn't learn from history. Climate changes combined with man's overhunting is what made the mammoth extinct. Plus large animals just don't populate quickly enough to compensate. The whalesharks are facing the same situation, but with an added bane. Our world's oceans are being polluted. Mercury is becoming a big issue. So all this added up almost guarantees extinction of the whalesharks

I had a similar encounter at Far Garden, Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, 3 days ago. It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen; I could have reached out and touched it's tail (though of course I didn't). I was amazingly lucky; it was only my 25th dive and my instructor said she had to wait 10 years and do 6,000 dives before she saw her first. Shark fin soup should be replaced by Japanese Penis Soup; it would be slightly less pointless. (No offence to non-fish eating Japanese people:)

i think the divers in this video are a little too "agressive". at least there was one semi-responsible diver in there who stopped another from reaching out and touching crap. just because you spent your 75 bucks for a day dive doesn't give you unlimited access to the underwater wonders. Diving is a privelage and you have a responsibiliy to NOT FUCK WITH SHIT! unlike the way all you fuck-tards buzzed around that whale shark like you were looking for a place to park on it. douchebags!

You are right. It is time that Asian governments initiate with a legislation to stop eating shark fins soup. Honestly, shark fin has no taste at all. Due to the high price it fetches, many people assume it is a popular and famous delicacy. In fact Shark fins are not suitable for consuming as they can contain high mercury contents.

@Shukie6174 Let's see. What makes an animal innocent? The dictionary definition of innocent "free of guilt or sin, esp. through lack of knowledge of evil". Considering "evil" is a purely human concept, I'd say all animals are innocent. Now, you make it sound like we're taking out our frustrations on them. That brings up images of things like torture. Is merely eating something considered "taking it out" on it? If it is, then let me remind you that the Chinese aren't the only ones who eat meat

Thanks, guys. You all make me really proud of being Chinese. Maybe one of these days I'll train my stomach to eat racist bastards alive, because things like cannibalism aren't beyond the nonexistent morality of us sadistic communists. It would be a great way for population control, wouldn't you agree? As for torturing animals, we're not the ones who started breeding cows to be so over-muscular that they can't even walk straight to be ground into a few hundred Big Macs to make poor people obese.

@katel88 there might be a sociological explanation for that. food famines were very prevalent in asian history, particularly in china and india. china's population actually decreased by 60 million people in the 1800s due to famine. they weren't fortunate enough to be able to pick and choose what to eat, so they ended up eating practically everything. that practice turned into the culture we see today.

I'm not gonna take any sides, or pick on anybodys culture here, but to everybody who thinks "shark finning" isn't cruel or senseless, just remember this one statistic: Every year, 4 people are killed by sharks. In the same time period, 4 million sharks are killed by people. Just a little food 4 thought. Just make sure the food doesn't have fins on it! ;)
