+kansasthunderman1 I imagine one reason is to practice as if you were diving for real, so wearing all gear to get comfortable with it. Second would be simply cos the pool is cold.

You pretty much got it right. Just get a 13,000 foot snorkel and make sure you have strong lungs to push against the water pressure.

Firstly: a really long snorkel just creates dead space that you continually inhale and exhale, re-breathing the same air over and over instead of replacing it. CO2 build-up in the dead space will make you feel breathless and make you take the snorkel out long before you use up the O2 in the air trapped in the dead space. Secondly, if you try to breathe through any length of snorkel with your head fully submerged, you will really struggle to pull any air into your lungs against the pressure.

With Method 1 (displacement clearing) keeping your head back, after you've exhaled, until your face clears the water will completely clear the snorkel. Bringing your head forward after you've exhaled but before it clears the surface will often leave a little bit of water in the snorkel which you then have to blow clear.

your lung capacity would be too small at some point and the air wouldn't change at all inside the tube. It would bounce up and down in there and you would run out of oxygen

First time I used a snorkel I thought it was so you got an extra breath to make it last longer underwater ... so I breathed in a whole load of water and I felt sick !!

I'll never forget surfacing with a snorkel and trying to breath through it, not realising the tip was dipping in the water, so for some reason I inhaled stronger and stronger til I ended up deeply inhaling a huge glob of water...I was already out of breath before that...fuck

Nope, it just allows you to face downwards while swimming around at the surface. May seem like a dud, but you'll find it is really convenient to be able to keep track of what you're seeing down in the water while coming up for a breath :-)

Yeah, thank you for sharing the first method. For some reason, something like 95% of snorkelers don't know about the much easier method number 1
