Hey AC I wanted to just give you a shout out. Your river treasure vids have really inspired my son. We watch most of your vids together. We went out just for fun, spontaneously purchased some masks with snorkels from Benny's. I'll admit I know they're poor quality. But we used them anyway. Every day on our last vacation. I used mine mainly to retrieve a $10 spinner lure I had lost on a log one morning before anyone woke up. Catching turtles. I even found another lure that I replaced the hooks on.
You're a good guy brotha. Thanks for giving my kid something appropriate and inspiring to watch when he gets lost in YouTube land. Cuz god knows he sure does. But it's fine with me as long as he keeps finding fun things he wants to do, because I really enjoy my time with him. Next summer I'll invest in some quality gear and we are going to do it right.

For defogging my personal way of doing it is thouroughly washing ONLY the glass of the mask with detergent, then do the same thing with toothpaste, thoroughly clean the glass. And so u dont get fog everytime before u go diving spit in the mask, put it all over across the glass and give it just a little bit of water so the spit doesent affect ur seeing. This has worked for me and has not damaged my mask.

I snorkel in the surface catching different animals with a net, a lot easier than with just goggles. But for diving and stuff, i don't really see a great benefit with a snorkel.

They have an anti-fog wax in a lil jar you can buy. Buff your lenses and it should keep them from fogging for the duration of your underwater adventure time. :)

My solution to my long hair getting tangled is to wear a bandana. It also helps keep the top of my head from getting sunburned (my hair is a bit thin on top, but not so thin that I can apply sunscreen there). I never have problems with my beard and mustache; my mustache naturally angles down low enough from my nose that it's not a problem. I got my current mask custom fitted to my face, but if/when I need a new one I will definitely look for a mask with a purge valve. I bought mine a few years ago and they were not very common then.

My biggest problem with snorkeling is that I float too well when my lungs are filled with air. It takes more energy for me to overcome the buoyancy than I can keep in a lung full of air, so I dive better when I expel 2/3s of the air from my lungs when I dive. Naturally this means I can't stay down very long, though. I've thought about carrying weights when snorkeling to counter this, but it seems like this might be a bad idea.

If you have that high of tubing then the air you would blow out would not reach oxygen before you breathed back in. You would just be breathing your Co2. And Co2 is TOXIC

Tips on holding your breath for longer? I don't smoke, don't do drugs, any of that bad stuff, I'm pretty athletic and do A LOT of cycling and yet i still find i cant hold my breath much longer than 40-60 seconds and that decreases swim any tips would be nice thanks.

Just curious as to why not take a scuba class?You'd need to take the fresh water additional one as an add on but then you could stay under water a heck of a lot longer. I knew a guy who'd take his kayak out on a river then use a spare air (small tank that is refillable) and not the big tank on his back so he could stay under for 5 minutes at a time. Just seems like this would work better for what you do.

First thing, I am not a Diver, that being said, have you ever looked into a "hookah" type of rig? That is a diver rig that forces fresh air down a hose to your snorkel and you expel the waste out the bottom purge valve. I saw one being advertised a few years ago and thought it was neat, although pretty useless at a depth of 20 to 30 feet. (Think ocean diving.)

Two important things about masks, 1, tilt your head back when surfacing before blowing out, that will help clear the water out 2, always equalize the pressure n the mask by sniffing out a bit of air into the mask otherwise you will get `mask squeeze` that's what gives you red lines on your face at best, at worst you will burst blood vessels in your eyeballs and you`ll look like dracula

I worked in a dive shop about 3 decades ago. Back then, for people who really needed glasses there was a company that would bond your prescription to your mask. I am not sure if they still do that but if you check out skin diver magazine you will probably see ads. It may be helpful for some.

If the standard products that are available at stores (such as the squishy silicone plugs, etc) don't work, you probably need custom plugs/ear molds created for you. You can make an appointment with an ent and they usually cost around $100 for the pair. Might sound like a lot, but if you consider the suffering and even money spent on healing ear infections, it's worth it!

When ascending from deeper water all one needs to do is blow a small bubble or small amount of air up your snorkel and if your timing is good your snorkel will be clear when you hit the surface. No big blow or puff is needed. This serves to conserve energy and keeps one from getting tired out.

For the lady with long hair, I can recommend using a swim cap, but get the ones made of fabric instead of latex or silicone. I'm not sure if they're made of Lycra or spandex, but they are very stretchy so you can get long hair all in them and your head will stay cool. They are much more comfortable than the latex and silicone.

I suspect that water pressure at a ten foot depth would make taking a breath under water difficult when trying to breath from a tube floating on the surface. The buoy would have to have a pump on it to pump air down to you. If memory serves me right, devices like this do exist.

Beau, having been a professional diver a good part of my life, we were taught to simply flip your head forward when you break the surface, and the water should shoot out of your snorkel, if not you still have a breath to get the rest out, just a FYI

So this comment will probably get buried, but here it is anyway. So the only river close to me that gets rafting and kayaking doesn't really have a hard bottom. I tried metal detecting it and couldn't get to signals. Should I just give up on the metal detecting and go to snorkeling instead, or will most everything be buried? I'm wondering if every time the river floods all the lost stuff gets covered up?

I scuba dive I got a full mustache. A non issue for scuba you got plenty of air to clear the mask. Can't free dive with it though. No excess air to clear mask with.

A very informative video, lots of questions I had answered :) One thing I've always wondered, is there some kind of mini-scuba setup where you basically have your setup, but connected to a small scuba tank that would not require full diving gear?

you can run a compresser off of a generator and connect an air line :)
