its stupid a friend of mine got a herniated cervical disk from a snorkel swimming freestyle with it. The snorkel holds air who has weight and that weight pushes your neck up so in order to compensate you use cervical back muscles which if not strong enough put pressure on the cervical vertebraes whose discs might herniate

I think that this snorkel is really good if you have neck or back issues. Can't comment on how easy it is to get the water out of it because I always manage to keep it above the water and don't do flips. It increased the amount of time that I can spend in the pool and made swimming pain free. I would recommend a nose plug however unless you are really competent with breathing because it is hard breathing in your mouth only when the nostrils are open. Good swimming aid.
