If you have ever been down to the Florida Keys for the opening of lobster season, then you know how passionate people get for catching lobster. (And for any of you northerners, these are "Spiny Lobster", not the Maine or New England lobster you might be used to seeing.) Anglers from all of over the state and beyond travel down to the warm and clear waters of the Florida Keys for lobster season because it's the best place in the southern US for catching lobster in a family environment. The reason for this is because in the Keys, there are tons of lobster in the 3 to 10 ft depth range so anyone who can somewhat hold their breath and swim has a shot at catching them. And the added bonus is that their tails are delicious... my personal favorite is butterflying the tails and grilling them... yum! Although these Florida lobster frequent shallow water, they can still be tricky to catch for a novice diver, so we put this video together to show exactly how to catch lobster with a net and tickle stick. To me it has always been easier to just flip the net over once the lobster is in. Thus, no need to grab or try to hold shut with tickle stick. You then can use your free hand also.

Tickle stick's are definitely safer too. Eels like to hang out in the same holes and crevices as lobsters, so if you go reaching your hand in blindly for a lobster you could be in for a pretty nasty surprise.

+Shawn Phillips If you're down in the Keys, you'll have plenty of territory to search because the lobster often hold in shallow water on the Gulf side that is sheltered from big waves... just drag a friend around so they can look for structure or holes that hold lobster.

Looks very easy with the tickle stick and the net. We catch East Coast Rock Lobster (Crayfish) here in South Africa while freediving, but have to use our hands as it is illegal to use any other form of apparatus to catch them. Thanks for the cool video.

+Three Swords I do not like to use scuba for lobstering because it's much less of a challenge. The act of catching lobster with a net and tickle stick described in this video of course applies to scuba diving too, but snorkeling is my preferred method.
