I'm traveling to SD from South Florida and snorkeling there this weekend! How deep is the water there? Do I need a wetsuit in September?

Hey, thanks for the reply! I'll be snorkeling & freediving in and around the caves. Not interested in fishing but thanks for the warnings. Generally how deep is the water in the area? Like 20ft? Super stoked and never been to California before.

You can see stuff in the surf and some kelp and structure as shallow as 10-15ft. It drops off to about 80ft if you go straight north parallel to shore.
Watch out for the Kayak Tours. Most of the people on the tour have never kayaked before so they might not see you.

Hi Gyasik! Yes, I would recommend a wetsuit so you can stay out longer without going numb. :) You can rent a wetsuit in town. If you are just snorkeling around, La Jolla cove is beautiful. There is not fishing no taking anything from there. Also stay out of the caves unless the surf is absolutely flat. Thanks for the comment. Hi Lisa, I take my non electronic valet key on a lanyard around my neck (inside my wetsuit). The water is so warm right now. You are going to have a blast.

Hi Finchman1, It was a 5mm back in 2012. Now it feels like a 2-3mm with some holes in it. Temp was around 62.
A new 5mm would be perfect.

I never release a moray.. I only remove them from places where I worry about my kids getting bit. They do make good soup though..
