Nicole FREEDIVING for LOBSTER + SPEARFISHING!**100% Hand Grabbing ACTION!** No NETS or SNARES!

This is a recent dive during mini season...although the main crowd had picked off many of the lobsters already we still found a few and had a great time out there. I love hand grabbing only, and here we even teamed up. Much more to come! Please subscribe & check my instagram page @NicoleSurfer, thanks for watching!! ………………………………… I originally found this sport on my own, and have spent hours researching info/watching others videos, and holding my breath on my couch, lol. I did some things the harder way initially, hence you will notice I'm wearing wetsuits with no weight belt (didn't even own one yet). I did that the whole first cold season lol, it was really hard to stay underwater being so buoyant and hunt/shoot fish, but I worked it out! I leave a lot of full clips that may not seem so eventful, but for me it really represents a lot of what is the reality of (at least my experience in) freediving/spearfishing. For me, it's 90%+ about the beauty, the freedom, the moments, the nature, being in harmony, witnessing another world full of life, and then there is the hunting aspect that comes in after, and doesn't conflict with the other appreciations. When I spear and kill a fish, or a lobster, anything...I respect that life and that it is suffering so much, and I want that to show in every way I handle that creature. Then to be as humane as possible even in how they are killed (quickly). It is not lost on me that until I came along, that creature was living a life, and that it ended so I could be nourished, and I always give my thanks and respect. On a side note, it always "bugs" me a little (pun intended, lol) when people throw around lobsters like they are not alive and experiencing misery, I even kill them (knife through head) BEFORE I twist their tails off so they don't experience a slow death. I just like to share these ideas, because I think as the evolved species that is hunting, we can be conscious about how we end something's life, unlike the rest of the animal kingdom that can't. Just sharing my 2 cents here :) To each their own though. You might notice..I don't "only" hunt big, impressive, trophy fish (to say the least! lol). 99% of these dives were from walking to the beach carrying my gear, and swimming offshore a couple hundreds yards out to the 1st reef. There is a lot of spectacular life out here, but I can easily dive a few hours and only come across a few good fish. I'm out there to have fun, dinner is a bonus, and I don't have any ego about the size...my attitude is that I'm grateful to have it and it's going to be delicious fried up. Heck…small means will fit right in the pan- whole! Yummy! lol. Yes, I often dive solo. I made sure I was knowledgeable in enough ways to minimize the biggest risks, and the rest of the risk I accept. I NEVER push my breath holds while diving. I would ONLY do that with someone watching me directly, knowing I'm pushing it, in case I blacked out. I dive within my comfort zone, I won't risk trying to hold a little longer, a little longer, just for that fish...because I understand there is no forgiveness in that kind of error, if you end up blacking out. So I listen to my body and surface before I really need to, I pay attention to the time I'm down. Boats are the other thing I look out for constantly, and then the sharks...but it's not sharky around here at all (very rare to see other than a nurse). I tie off my float and keep my fish there, they're only on my hip for a short time. Thanks for watching! May everyone get to be able to get out and do something they love! - Nicole - tags, Bimini, Riffe, Otter, Float, shore, beach, dive, evolve, torelli, lobster, spear, fish, fishing, spearfishing, hog, stonefish, night, lobster, tarpon, hawaiian sling spear, pole spear, spearfish, ocean, girl, sexy, bikini, reef, freedive, snorkel, fish, snapper, underwater, freediving, Nicole d'Aiguillon, girl, women, sharks, shark, diving, girls, free dive, woman

When I lived on Hollywood Bch I would dive with scuba. I would kick out to the 60 ft reef line then turn my air on and hunt. I would dive in the winter it was a lot of work and tobe that far off shore hunting alone was creepy I would drift dive out of palm bch the boat follows your flot line and when you surface the boats right there. Something about hunting alone where no one can hear you scream or save you cool as hell. Try off New York street lots of patch reef no one hits. Sometimes I got big fish and had to kick back on the surface shark central when that far from the beach.Great show God Bless.

Have you unboiled any yet? And have you heard the original track of that ilk, Psychic TV's "Papal Breakdance" (featuring mostly JFK and John Paul on vocals)? (You'd probably enjoy it, and his cover of "Good Vibrations".) Anyway, I'm jealous y'all got TWO, since up here in Stuart I've been holding off on lobster diving for the time being because of our blue green algae issues. (There's no way my dad'll ever pass on boiling the head of a big one, and even though we clean most of the orange liver out, mycotoxins aren't something I want to take chances with... so I don't want to risk catching any big ones 'til after they stop draining Lake Okeechobee.) Oh, and my suggestion about "unboiling" them does Not apply to separated carapaces... since if you cook THOSE below a boil, their crab-like meat turns to mush.
Bob H
Bob H - 5 years ago
Yeah, I haven't tried that one myself yet (not surprisingly, since it came out yesterday... and I think I'll still cook the big heads separately anyway)... but one thing that I did get off the internet that already has been a big help is a method advocated by some UF students, of de-veining the tails, wherein you stick the thicker end of the broken-off antenna up their butts (not the UF students's, mind you), instead of using the thinner end... such that the spines on the antenna are pointed out of the butt, and thus hook the intestine a lot better. Gotta gauge where you break off the thicker end of the antenna, though, so that it isn't too thick to fit, but works great. Oh, and while I'm on an eldersplainin' roll, when you spear a few more fish than you can eat fresh, something that works better than vacuum bagging for long term freezing (for use during rough-sea stretches) is freezing skinless fillets in already-cooled down freshwater, in zip lock quart freezer bags. You put the fillets in, pour chilled water in, and squeeze out excessive water while you're zipping the bag, making sure to squeeze out all the bubbles in the process, and it protects the fillets from oxidization better than anything, to the point that they can even taste fresh after 6 months in the freezer. These ziplock packs defrost pretty quickly if placed in a bowl of tapwater. Lobster tails frozen in freshwater in tupperware keep great this way, too, and can actually taste 'sweeter' than fresh, because during freezing, the iodine in the saltwater in their swimlets leaches out into the chilled freshwater... which, as ice, gets rinsed off under the tap when defrosting. All you do with the lobster tails is rinse the ice off of them, and then put the still mostly frozen tails in a pot of room temp water, and turn the burner on high. The pot of water takes more than ten minutes to heat up, and they smoothly defrost in the process. And by the time the water is getting toward boiling (after 15 minutes+), and needs to be turned down some, to keep it not only from boiling, but from moving much, they are defrosted and ready to evenly cook at that setting. Takes somewhere around 22 minutes from the time you first turn the burner on, for minimal-keeper tails. Of course, with all-the-seafood-you-can-catch being available even during rough-sea stretches, eating too much mercury could be a concern, but there is good news on that front. Turns out, according to the best currently available science, (including a half million dollar EPA-funded study using fish-fed lab rats), the well-established problem with mercury is that it binds with selenium in the brain, and unbound selenium is what protects the brain from oxidization. Eating fish that has more selenium than mercury in it hasn't been found to have ill effects, no matter how much mercury it has. But eating fish like kingfish, specimens of which larger than 30 inches typically do have more mercury than selenium, HAS been found to have ill effects. But if you take a few 200 milligram selenium pills with iffy fish, all should be fine. (Being a micro-nutrient, like copper, more than 800 milligrams of selenium a day is toxic, so don't go overboard.) There aren't actually many fish that you would spear that have more mercury than selenium, but since Florida soil, and thus presumably Florida's produce, is low in selenium, it wouldn't hurt to take a selenium pill every time you eat a bunch of fish. Anyway, enough definitely-useful tips. Just compulsively/convulsively, here are some more hot(OR not) tips on Youtubes from what seems to me to have been one of the true golden ages of American music, 1927 to 1932. What I especially like about these two, and I guess why I can't help but relate them to you, is that they have more of a side-awareness of the outdoors than our modern music typically does. From 1932: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxYRsWOxG_o . And from 1930: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbbmx53cAOw

Bob H

Since you prefer to kill your lobster before cleaning them, there is a newly publicized method of cleaning them that would be difficult to do with a live one but which might be just the ticket for you, when it comes to dealing with head meat. If you scroll down to the August 27, 2018 video, described as "A new way to clean lobster", on the following website, you can see this neat trick, which I certainly hadn't seen before: https://www.facebook.com/bahamafishing/

These are the worthy versions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9taYytjDgeg and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDOX7rzeAGg ...and I mistakenly referred to Genesis, who identifies as "third gender" by now, as a he. (Sorry to get off the lobster subject, but your soundtrack, which I hadn't heard before, intrigued me because it means that two of JFK's most famous speeches fit so well to music that JFK, rather than Muhammad Ali, could be said to be the first rapper... though actually Will Shade [aka Son Brimmer, of the Memphis Jug Band] was this close to rap back in 1928, when this here track was recorded: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3glET0vebQ.) About the lobster heads, though, you'd probably want to have a way to subsequently put them on ice if you are going to take 'em off and clean the guts out of them out in the water.

Bob H I have to check out that kusic thanks!! Also you gave me some new things to think about with the lobster heads, good to question thanks!

Speaking of boiled heads, I just remembered that the only good one of the many of Genesis P-Orridge's covers of the Beach Boy's "Good Vibrations" is the one from Godstar (the soundtrack of an unmade movie) and a 7" single... and not merely because it's the one that mentions a fish (though it gets bonus points for that... cuz I'm not sure the dern "Beach Boys" Ever sang word one about a fish).

Lol I know you just filmed this because the wind has blown all that brown seaweed onto the gold coast.
