Nicole NEW Spearfishing & Freediving Florida/ Hunting the Reefs, Lobster Grabs, Snappers, Sharks!

This is a mix of my Freediving/ Spearfishing footage for the past year+. Hogfish, grouper, lobsters, schools of tarpon, and lots of hand-grabbing lobsters! All Pole Spear. It goes through lots of footage of 2016, through 2018, with Summer diving where I could dive for 5 hours straight with no wetsuit and still feel toasty...which is awesome!. I've only been diving/spearing for a few years and love it, I never worry about getting the most or biggest fish...just having the most fun! I finally finished this video and will update my description including some of my favorite moments. For now I’m happy to finally share more of my magical moments…please subscribe for more, I have so many amazing things that have happened even since the highlights I’ve shared here! ………………………………………………………………….. I found this sport on my own, and have spent hours researching info/watching others videos, and holding my breath on my couch, lol. I did some things the harder way initially, hence you will notice I'm wearing wetsuits with no weight belt (didn't even own one yet). I did that the whole first cold season lol, it was really hard to stay underwater being so buoyant and hunt/shoot fish, but I worked it out! I left a lot of full clips that may not seem so eventful, but for me it really represents a lot of what is the reality of (at least my experience in) freediving/spearfishing. For me, it's 90%+ about the beauty, the freedom, the moments, the nature, being in harmony, witnessing another world full of life, and then there is the hunting aspect that comes in after, and doesn't conflict with the other appreciations. When I spear and kill a fish, or a lobster, anything...I respect that life and that it is suffering so much, and I want that to show in every way I handle that creature. Then to be as humane as possible even in how they are killed (quickly). It is not lost on me that until I came along, that creature was living a life, and that it ended so I could be nourished, and I always give my thanks and respect. On a side note, it always "bugs" me a little (pun intended, lol) when people throw around lobsters like they are not alive and experiencing misery, I even kill them (knife through head) BEFORE I twist their tails off so they don't experience a slow death. I just like to share these ideas, because I think as the evolved species that is hunting, we can be conscious about how we end something's life, unlike the rest of the animal kingdom that can't. Just sharing my 2 cents here :) To each their own though. You might notice..I don't "only" hunt big, impressive, trophy fish (to say the least! lol). 99% of these dives were from walking to the beach carrying my gear, and swimming offshore a couple hundreds yards out to the 1st reef. There is a lot of spectacular life out here, but I can easily dive a few hours and only come across a few good fish. I'm out there to have fun, dinner is a bonus, and I don't have any ego about the size...my attitude is that I'm grateful to have it and it's going to be delicious fried up. Heck…small means will fit right in the pan- whole! Yummy! lol. Yes, I often dive solo. I made sure I was knowledgeable in enough ways to minimize the biggest risks, and the rest of the risk I accept. I NEVER push my breath holds while diving. I would ONLY do that with someone watching me directly, knowing I'm pushing it, in case I blacked out. I dive within my comfort zone, I won't risk trying to hold a little longer, a little longer, just for that fish...because I understand there is no forgiveness in that kind of error, if you end up blacking out. So I listen to my body and surface before I really need to, I pay attention to the time I'm down. Boats are the other thing I look out for constantly, and then the sharks...but it's not sharky around here at all (very rare to see other than a nurse). I tie off my float and keep my fish there, they're only on my hip for a short time. Thanks for watching! May everyone get to be able to get out and do something they love! - Nicole - tags, Bimini Riffe Otter Float shore beach dive evolve torelli lobster spear fish fishing spearfishing, hog, stonefish, night, lobster, tarpon, hawaiian sling spear, pole spear, spearfish, ocean, girl, sexy, bikini, reef, freedive, snorkel, fish, snapper, underwater, freediving, Nicole d'Aiguillon, girl, women, sharks, shark, diving, girls, free dive, woman

Nicole.....i like what you had to say about diving within your comfort zone. True.....there is no forgiveness when it comes to blackouts. So many people have lost their lives pushing the limit....and for what. Those few extra feet or seconds forever removed them from ever again enjoying all the beauty and wonder life has to offer. It's a fine line I know......
I often think of Jay Moriarty and all the water time he's missed out on.....the relationships he lost to his desire to go further.
If you spend as much time in the water as I have you will see that it is just a matter of time before you find yourself in some hairy situations. Respect for the ocean and it's inhabitants can aide in your surviving such situations.
The idea, for me, was not to become so complacent and carefree that I lost focus on my surroundings. Not the easiest thing to do when zeroing in on that 10 lb hog snapper, but a state of mind to strive for. It's all about honing and fine tuning our instincts.
I'm not trying to be negative Nicole. I just don't wish to hear on the news one day that your crew was filming you at the surface with a big bug and a boat ran you over, or a shark nibbled on your ankle.
Safety First......ALWAYS.

You should get a bag for your lobster and a stringer line for your fish catch it dont look to clever with them hanging off your hip sharks and seals will take your arse off you.
Nicole Surfer
Nicole Surfer - 6 years ago
raymond bailey I agree! I do have a float that holds everything. I only put them on my hip if I need my hands free because I'm away from my float. Also it's not very sharky at this beach....but I agree you need to be careful and it's higher risk ;)

Nicole Surfer I've wondered how you all do it. I can get to 10' then my head feels like it's going to implode. I live in the ozarks and we have some nice lakes that many people scuba. I'm cool with snorkle.

gary rimington You have to do what's called equalizing, otherwise they will! It's not supposed to be painful. Google it and you'll see some basic techniques even for 10' of water you'll feel a huge difference. Hope this helps :)

They actually closed their business, so I'm looking for another shore diving float to recommend. It's not easy to find a really complete one, so many have design flaws that I don't think are ideal for functionality and durability. You don't want something that can pop easily....stay tuned I'm looking to get a new one...or I'll end up making one out of a boogie board darn it! Google DIY shore dive float!

How well do the lobster recover if you accidentally break their tentacles and they're not the right size?
Nicole Surfer
Nicole Surfer - 6 years ago
I actually really wanted to know that myself in the past, and I've research how long it takes and there wasn't much clarity out there on time frames. Just the knowledge that when they molt is when they regenerate each time. They are like lizards with their tails where they are meant to break off those parts to escape, as there are many fish that like to nibble on them so they do regenerate. I felt bad though after going too rough on some and leaving them at a disadvantage out there and I began to be more selective, where I will just leave them alone completely if they don't look like a sure thing. Sometimes when you look in a hole they seem bigger than they are and you just do your best though...

My older eyes can't totally tell from the video, but did it look to you "in person" like that Cornet or Trumpet fish or whatever they're called had fake eyes near the outer end of its upper jaw? (I caught and released one back when I had good vision that looked for all the world like it DID have two sets of eyes, and neither set was discernibly fake... but that was out of the water.) Oh, and for those who aren't as masterful as you, but inspired, try to avoid holding BIG lobster underneath the carapace (had an EMT friend who treated someone who'd gotten a finger snapped off, presumably at a joint, by the tail's side-triangles snapping together). And for those intrigued by the rays, make sure never to poke a Torpedo Ray (the one with the two stingrays) with a pole spear... or you'll be in for a shock. That was wild that that nurse shark came up to the surface to barge you (I've had a nurse come over to barge me, once, but I was working lobster, and it was not as persistent)... but maybe it was drawn by the electric current in your GoPro? (If you're ever seriously menaced by a shark swimming abnormally "jinkily", it probably is electrically over-stimulated [doesn't take much current at all]... but you could always stick your GoPro out away from you, for it to safely home in on... unless of course you've got definitive footage of a four eyed fish in it!)
Nicole Surfer
Nicole Surfer - 6 years ago
oh wow that's a lot of fun facts rolled into one comment, again who knew!!? lol! And I will have to try that one of the times I cook the tails, season is closed for now. Great advice again thanks!!!
Bob H
Bob H - 6 years ago
By the way, I'm not kidding about the Torpedo Ray's "shocking" abilities (no eels necessary). And turns out scientists are on it for you, in a 2016 paper's abstract: "Direct electric power generation using biological functions have become a research focus due to their low cost and cleanliness. Unlike major approaches using glucose fuels or microbial fuel cells (MFCs), we present a generation method with intrinsically high energy conversion efficiency and generation with arbitrary timing using living electric organs of Torpedo (electric rays) which are serially integrated electrocytes converting ATP into electric energy." Oh, and while I'm being pedantic... moving on to that yellow inner tube you use... betcha didn't know that a certain Texpunk band was shooting as much for down-homey as risque when they named themselves the Butthole Surfers... since in Texas the term "butthole surfing" was actually cleverly coined to refer to floatin' down a river in an inner tube. Oh, and in your admirable spirit of ensuring your catch's sacrifice is not in vain, have you tried cooking your tails in water that has been turned down to below a boil (hardly moving) before putting them in, and then kept below a boil to keep it from moving? It takes 1.5 times as long to cook them all the way through this way, but they come out much more tender, because boiling them always overcooks the outer half of the tail's flesh by the time the center is done, making them chewier than they need to be. And if you use plenty of unsalted water, they taste sweeter than with less water. Split the shell and remove the halves right after you take them out of the pot, and you will never boil one again! (If you even do.) Oh, and do not underestimate the Ampullae of Lorenzini!
Nicole Surfer
Nicole Surfer - 6 years ago
You're correct it was a cornet fish! It has some pretty cool markings but only 2 eyes total! Good advice on the lobster tails, who knew! I was guessing that shark was territorial because I think it was the same one that on 2 other dives would charge myself and even some other diver friends out of nowhere. Just a little aggressive guy...maybe territorial or who knows..wish he would tell me lol

Hi Catie, Thank you SO much that means a LOT!! So happy for you that you went after your passion, you have done so much already wow! It's the kind of thing where maybe in your mind you think you have to be so "ready"...but for me once you're out there just enjoy and you will get better naturally without having to think much. Also you've already been certified so you are well off in your safety knowledge which is excellent! For the mask, I still am spitting in it throughout my dives if I need to clear it out. I also use the little clear anti-fog drops they sell in the dive shops, I'm always feeling out what is too much or too little and I think I go a little nuts over it. My other friends don't seem to have any issues lol. I'm just super picky over having a PERFECT view with not 1 speck of sand, or smudge. Just follow the directions of the drops, and find the sweet spot. For me if I rinse too much it doesn't work well, then if I don't rinse enough it's like I'm seeing through vaseline in some spots. So you will feel it out by practice. Snorkel-wise, the Riffe Stable is by far the best in my opinion. Unless you are in very flat water all the time, I went through 5 snorkels before I landed on the Riffe and felt it was perfect. Everyone I know agrees on that one as well once they've tried it. Hope this helps and You are doing amazing! Don't forget I got my breath holds up on my couch and it did fine for me, I'm considered average really....it's about enjoying yourself :) Looking forward to your videos in the future, please share!! Thanks! Nicole

For a real night dive and not just a "sunset into night" one I use a larger one, combined with another small one with a cone cap I might clip to myself so it illuminates around me, also you can see each other nicely not just where the flashlights are. https://www.austinsdiving.com/product/princeton-tec-miniwave-led-dive-light and for the little one http://www.diversdirect.com/scuba-diving/princeton-tec-amp-1l-light-w-cone

Fl. can have riptides and so on. i just wanted to mention that there are inflatable vests, completely flat and deflated which you can wear, and if you ever are in need all you have to do is grab a straw like tube and blow air into it and you'd be safe. ebay walmat.com they run about 20 bucks. Happy spear fishing looking forward to the next one.

gator bite not sure honestly I've never pushed myself as much in the water as I have practicing safely on land. Is there a secret to breathing out of a snorkel? This has been my biggest challenge in getting comfortable. I do breathing exercises on the couch and walking.....I can breath through the snorkel all the way till it's time to put my head in the water and something happens.....I feel like my breathing's restricted.....I'm guessing it's just in my head and I gotta do it more.
Nicole Surfer
Nicole Surfer - 6 years ago
That's great you're practicing safely that way, that's what I do it really works! I hear you on the snorkel breathing. Yes it sounds like you have a mental discomfort with it. When something affects me that way I find something postive about the experience...so while I accept the discomfort is there I point my focus as fully on something else positive I believe about it. I make that part "big" so the fear factor is "small" and then fades more and more. For instance, breathing through that snorkel is your gateway to an uninterrupted magical world! What an amazing invention that basically gives you a superpower to stay submerged and to never look away from the underwater world! So instead of seeing the snorkel as something only uncomfortable, see it as a badass tool that takes some getting used to but it's empowering you to be in another world. Then don't let yourself focus on the breathing...just focus on beautiful things you're seeing. The louder the volume on your discomfort goes, turn up the volume on appreciation of what you're seeing. Force yourself to focus on details in corals, fish...rocks. Make yourself identify them or remember them for later, etc. Have you ever heard the "which wolf you feed" story (you can google it)? It kinda reminds me of that, only you are feeding your passion instead of your fear, so your joy will grow, your fear will shrink. Anyhoo...that's what I do lol. Also The RIFFE STABLE snorkel is by far the best more comfortable diving snorkel I've ever tried, and I went through about 5 looking for the best one. Good luck!!! Hope it helps :)

Wow those lobsters were just hanging out in the open! Great video :) how long did it take you to get all that footage!?
Nicole Surfer
Nicole Surfer - 6 years ago
Yes they are quite inquisitive and almost sweet which is why I like to be handle them with respect and I would never pull the "dropping them into boiling water alive" kind of thing, ya know? That's just how I feel though. It took over a year but sometimes I get a lot of footage quickly, it all depends on how much I turn the video camera on or have a buddy filming :)
Thank you!!!!!

In this video I use a pole spear made by Riffe, they are my favorite (speargun.com). Another excellent brand that I'm about to use soon in addition to my Riffe is Evolve Pole spears based out of Hawaii.

I love your videos you are a natural. Glad to see you back in action. Have you ever tried one of those red or Magenta lens caps for the GoPro? They tend to bring out the colors in the fish better. The red for the blue water, and the Magenta for the green, but when you surface then you will be either red or magenta. Lol. I tried it on a snorkeling run I did in Haiti and it was awesome. Thanks for the excellent vids.
Nicole Surfer
Nicole Surfer - 6 years ago
Thank you! Yes I have one I haven't used yet but I will sometime. The reason is because I'm always at the top speaking or whatever afterwards, and that would be completely red looking (like you said haha). So it's a trade off. Underwater looks great, shallow/top looks bad. I figure I will set aside a time for only great underwater shots (not as much hunting) and use the filter then. Haiti must have been amazing!

Hello! Not a diver myself. No idea why YT algorithm put this vid in my que. Don't watch diving vids.
As a kid I grew up on that beach you dive from. Live just up the road now. Really good music. Vid is good as well. One question. Please, do you ever see any Snook? Again truly enjoyed you sharing of some good experien ces.

David Sawyer oh that's so cool! It's pretty different now. I think you need to take a vacation and go snorkeling/freediving asap :)

Nicole Surfer Thanks for replying Nicole. As a kid my Mom would gather us all up. A friend or two of my sisters or mine and head to Garfield street. Believe it or not there use to be a pavilion with four gas griddles available to the public for free. First come first serve. Trampolines just north of Johnson street. My friends and I use to really free dive. Haha. No mask or fins. Lifeguards hated us. For all their concern we just kept going out. Junior lifeguard at 10. Ocean rescue card at 21. Good times. Keep it up Nicole!

Nicole Surfer - 6 years ago
David Sawyer that's neat you're a local and hopefully got a good view of what's always been out there. It's been a long time since I've seen any snook there, not for a very long time and was rare. Guess they're in other spots, I can't spear them anyways but wow are they delicious! Thank you!

Love the video! You're pretty awesome girl!! My boyfriend and I have been free diving a lot in fort lauderdale and commercial especially. I have to ask where you got the dive flag float...its perfect for us but we couldn't it find it when we were searching for it online.
Nicole Surfer
Nicole Surfer - 6 years ago
No problem, I totally get it :) I haven't heard back about it yet so I would look around, I know I heard great things about the Banksboard, although it's the not the cheapest people said it was a top one. I googled "freedive spearfish board" and got a bunch otherwise. Maybe there will be something at Blue Wild. Will let you know if he tells me anything on the Otter Float but otherwise good luck! See you at the Blue Wild perhaps!
Christina Canna
Christina Canna - 6 years ago
That's so great!! Yes we are definitely interested...we could just add the flag we already have to it, that's no biggie ☺ I really appreciate it girl! It's so sweet of you to go out of your way like this! Thanks!!
Nicole Surfer
Nicole Surfer - 6 years ago
Christina Canna yes he said he has some left but they are without the flag part, but that part you can add another one easily. He's going to let me know a discounted price possibly for what is left for those interested. Yes definitely try to go to the Blue Wild if you've never gone, it's not a huge convention but it has so much cool gear and you can get some good deals!

Nicole Surfer - 6 years ago
Christina Canna thank you so much!!! Yes Commercial is really pretty I've been there, love the formation there. I actually didn't realize until yesterday the Otter Float closed the business (it's a tough industry) but I will reach out to the owner and ask if he has any leftover inventory. It is really hard to find something like that, there are only a few products like that and I would want to do more research before recommending a specific one. But I will let you know here or DM on IG if he says yes, I'm forwarding your message to him:)

Nicole Surfer
Nicole Surfer - 6 years ago
Matt R while I don't give my exact location which I'm sure you can understand, I can say that South Florida has a ledge that runs along the entire Coast. I always recommend commercial pier in Fort Lauderdale, it has beautiful Reef and a lot of people go there so it's better for boats looking out for you. Glad you enjoyed thank you!

I have so many questions about diving off the beach. Im in north miami by newport pier/haulover. Is there a reef in my area i can swim to? Also is there a diving club or group that meets up so i can learn the ropes? I know how to dive just never gone from shore and im a little nervous. Great vids btw. Hope to run into you so i can pick your brain.
Nicole Surfer
Nicole Surfer - 6 years ago
Try meetup.com I bet there's a group, just a thought:)
Nicole Surfer
Nicole Surfer - 6 years ago
miamiwax there is a ledge that runs all along south Florida so there are many areas, but you have to be SO careful of boats even with a big dive flag. I like to recommend Commercial Pier in ft lauderdale since it's beautiful and a more people go there so boats are more aware in that area. But still be on the lookout of course! Thanks for watching and enjoying :)

Francky018 I hear ya, they are lengthy and lots of footage from a long period of time. I figure it's like watching an episode of something on TV haha. But really my intention is to do many shorter ones, then only very long ones occasionally. I was also kind of clearing out all my previous footage. And thank you!

Адис П.0 honestly I'm not sure when I'm actually diving I've never gone to what I think my limit is, I dive more conservatively to be safer unless I tell my buddy very clearly to watch me every moment after I dive. I'm more relaxed about it, and I practice at home and even walk around while holding my breath in the house. It works lol :)

My only complaint is the difference in the volumes from music to your talking. Otherwise great video!
Nicole Surfer
Nicole Surfer - 6 years ago
Agreed! I tried to balance that out, am getting better. With GoPro housing it's hard to get good volume on voices sometimes, so I turn the volume way up on the voice during editing, then the music down. There were a couple clips I didn't turn the music down enough, with 100 clips and voice editing, text overwriting, music editing up and down every few seconds...I am definitely making small mistakes but I get better with each video :) And thank you!
