I was watching a pod of orcas swimming up the beach, I saw a swimmer swimming along shore directly towards them, at this point I asked my partner to get my mobile phone as I wasn’t sure what would happen and I may have to call for help. The orcas circled her and she got quite the fright. She then got out the water as she was only 20m from shore. Some on lookers chatted to her about the experience and then to my surprise she got back into the water and swam back towards the pod, to I assume continue her training swim. I then launched the drone and filmed from a fair distance away making sure not to disturb the pod of orcas. What I witnessed was truly amazing. Lovely creatures. But why don't they eat humans?? I never understood that.. we look like seals and would be the right size for a meal?

Orcas are very highly intelligent mammals that are able to distinguish people. That's why alot of them are held captive because they can easily be train. Although they can easily kill a human with a swift slap with their tail fins but somehow they are gentle and curious around humans. There have been no known cases of them attacking humans in the wild but only in captivity which is due to the stress of being in the small tank. My theory in why they don't attack humans is that i suspect that the Orcas see humans as Alpha Predators and realize that humans can do more harm to them if they started to attack us. Because i suspect that through centuries of hunting Orcas they have learned that we can inflict more harm to them for attacking humans. So through past generations of Orcas being killed and hunted by humans they have learn not to mess with us and have pass this knowledge on of not to eat humans. These animals are alot more intelligent than we give them credit for because their brain thinking capacity is right up there with humans. Just think if they had hands and feets because they would be humans worst nightmare and competition

It is a pity that there are still fools who call these animals: killer killer whales. You have to be an idiot really. There is not a single case, nor a single one, in which an orca, in freedom, attacked a person. They are partakers of the wolf syndrome. A greeting.
Ramon Centellas
Ramon Centellas - 5 years ago

Orcas are extremely playful, calm, and gentle creatures and Seaworld makes them out to be aggressive monsters because of how they mistreat them. This is how they are in the wild, VS. kept in a tank. Keep the fuckin things where they belong lmfao this is the kind of wholesome content you get from conserving animals

theres something different about these types mammals with their young as opposed to land mammals like bears and big cats when it comes to their interaction with humans. In Fla. in the 70's i visited my brother and his wife for 3 summers. My sister-in-laws parents had a house right on the banana river on the end on a canal , the end that extended farthest out in to the river. They had a large cabin cruiser used for fishing and a 14 foot jon boat her brother and i used to fish in the banana river. When we would come across a pod of dolphin or porpoise we would ride up beside the pod and get out in front of the pod and take turns diving out in front of them so they would have to swim thro or around us. When we did the pups, all the pups would stop to check us out. The adults having kept swimming on would turn around to i guess "see whats wrong" They were never aggressive until the 3rd or 4th "turn around." The pups were always playful and when the "parents" would come back they would just swim around making noises , kind of rounding up the kids and they would continue on. The 3rd or 4th time they would let us know that whatever we were doing was over by making physical contact and a little forcefully push us thro the water. You could tell that they some what understood, i think, by the actions of the pups we were playing with the babies but now it was over. The point is , in comparing this interaction with what a bear or big cat would be. Bears or big cats would have killed us on the first attempt of this interaction. Im pretty sure the reason is the intelligence level between the 2 species. FYI, we were 12, 13 and 14 years old. No one EVER got hurt. Yes, it was dumb ..

Well the way and rate that humans kill animals, the only way for these animals to survive might be by them being in aquariums.I agree it's not ideal for whales to be aquariums, but it's better than them being extinct.

there are 2 kinds of orcas- one eats smaller fish wile the more northern ones (like in norway) eat larger prey like seals and even sharks. neither have been known go attack humans. I dont understand how people can see them as "killers" when they're probably the most intelligent animals on earth :/ got to see some in Vancouver only about 3 or 4 feet under a very small speed boat- it was amazing and honestly I'm jealous of this lady ahah

I got caught in the mix of Orcas while surfing in Mexico at Rosarito beach. I was paddling out waves were tripple overhead I was scratching to make it past a set wave and in the face of a 20 ft wave an Orca swam right through it as I was trying to make it past that wave. I had to paddle as fast as I could right at it for it was 10ft above me swimming/surfing in the middle of that wave. Scared me to say the least but I was also concerned with the giant surf I was trying to get past so I wouldn't get caught inside and pounded. There was only one other person out with me he was a local, I told him dude there's Orcas out here! he said no bro it's only a big porpoise! Wtf? I stayed out my friends were all too afraid to come out and surf with me cuz the waves were so big. I looked back on shore and see them frantically screaming at me, trying to make out what they're yelling, I vaguely hear Orcas killer whales!!! I turned paddled and jumped on the first wave I could catch and headed back to shore my friends told me there was 5 to 7 orcas circling around me but I only saw one of them! It was crazy and amazing I'll never forget it! They were eating seals they cornered in the cove. These beautiful creatures can kill and eat Great white sharks! As beautiful as this video is have Respect and count your blessings if this was to happen to you! Epic but sketchy! Also note Orcas when with calves have been known to play very aggressively with humans in the ocean as if to teach their young how dominant they truly are! Beautiful video Amazing creatures!

To various comments- they are not all harmless - have immense capacity and strength - but generally they tolerate humans more than most apex predators. I have swum and dived closely with numerous sharks orcas etc and never felt the same trepidation that I did when I was closed to a wild apex other - (bear, wolf, lion, leopard) apart from a wild cheetah! Orcas in particular are so intelligent.

Having watched so many orca vids, I think the most probable reason that such a ferocius predator chooses not to attack humans is similar to the major reason that we humans don't kill cats for food. The reason is simple: why should we?

This is a STUNNING video of an extraordinary encounter and relationship of Orcas and a human.
The mother(?) must be close to 15 feet, with the two offspring still longer than the swimmer, but
the grace and apparent nonchalance of the Orcas slowly manoeuvring around the person is a
real joy to behold.
It almost looks like the swimmer is taking the Orcas out for a little early morning swim.........beautiful!

Beautiful scene. Really triggers the romantic mind. Rationally, I don't get it though. How often do they encounter humans? Why don't they attack? They are intelligent enough to figure out that they wouldn't risk themselves by doing so. Do they instinctively know that we aren't of the blubbery oily kind? And even so, they often play with their prey to hone their hunting techniques. It wouldn't cost them a thing for the mother to teach the cub drowning, ambush or breaching techniques on the swimmer. But still, they just seem to appreciate the encounter.
I do realize that sub populations of orcas cater to specific diets and that the ones in the video may not be the same that kill seals, and may be only hunting fish and/or squids. But it is my understanding that this behavior is representative across these populations.
I love it, but I don't get it.

To experience some like this is a dream of mine. Orcas are my favorite marine animal and to swim near/with them would be amazing! Now I would not just go out to the nearest pod and take a dip lol I now that it’s not safe because different areas have different orca cultures. There are some that eat not only fish but mammals too and there are pods that only eat fish. The pods that eat mammals can be a bit more on the aggressive side but they still have never attacked a human before. Pods that eat only fish are very gentle and are the ones that you see interacting with humans most of the time. At least that is what I have research and seen.

Angry Earthling.
Great comment Kirsten Kennedy and how right you are, we have no listed fatalities from Orcas in the wild and as a matter of fact we have listed stories from the past which show that when this mammal comes into contact with human beings they engage with them in a positive manner but when we capture and then trap such a big creature in pools not big enough to swing a cat in and they react negatively it's suddenly the Orcas fault so it must be destroyed, wild life is aply named so for that reason, it a wild animal and should not be used as a source of entertainment for Moran's who laugh and cheer at a creatures who must be living a miserable and confused existance. Shame on mankind and if he had any sort of bond with his planet and what exists upon it, he would seek out such creatures and enjoy them in their natural habitat and that gift should be opened to all but more importantly to children who are the next generations, after all it will be up to them to protect mother earth and all her inhabitants from future carnage.

They tend to hang around areas in New Zealand which isn't normal BOP/Wellington/BOI orcas. But New Zealand it is unique. Helps to have laws stopping drift netting close to the mainland. Marine reserves scattered around the country to bolster there food supply why would they leave? It's like a ocean hotel down here for them.

There is something in one of them's mouth, middle size one. Probably they are already feeding with known meal for them and they were just trying to check out that swimmer. Orcas only eats what they know.

orcas literally beach themself when they hunt... and there are several examples filmed where they are in extremly shallow water, even in a lagoon that gets cut off with the tide where they rest and play.

I love this video, but read something today researching my wifes native ancestry which I found profound in light of this video. Father Maillard, a missionary in the French Acadia area of eastern Canada, did a lot of recording the language and stories of the Migmaw people at the time. In a letter he wrote to a superior, he details a shaman named Arguimaut who shared how the Migmaw built canoes and led them to this chilling bit about their dire fear of Orcas;

"These are long journeys for us. We much prefer to make them in calm or good weather, since the Bad Fish which often infest these seas do not allow us to sail without worry and fear. All too often, these malicious beings attack the sterns of our canoes so suddenly and without warning that they sink the boat and all who are in it. Some escape by swimming, but there are always some who fall prey to these voracious flesh-eating fish. When we see them bearing down on us, we stop paddling immediately, and, taking a pole tipped with a very hard pointed bone, we try to harpoon the fish if we can. As soon as it feels the wound the creature draws off for a time. We take advantage of the short respite to paddle as fast as we can; and if it returns to the attack we repeat our actions until we see land. There is almost no way to escape if two animals attack the canoe at the same time. If we are caught without our spears, with fear and trembling we throw overboard any pieces of meat or fish we may have, one by one, to distract the fish behind us while the one in front paddles gently on without stopping. If we have nothing else to throw, we take off our furs and throw them overboard. We have often thrown even our game-bird headdresses to the creatures. At last, when there is nothing left to throw, we take the longest and sharpest of the bones we always have in our canoes and tie them as best we can to the ends of our paddles. Or else we tie several arrows together, binding the points as tightly as we can, and tie the bundle to the end of a paddle or an oar with a belt. Then we lie in wait to harpoon the creature. "Of course, it is not as easy to harpoon the animal with this weapon as with the spear, because the paddle is never long enough. However, this makeshift weapon has often served us well.

Finally, when we have to make a journey (which we do rarely because of these fearsome animals), we take several very leafy branches and put them at the stern of our canoe, where they stick up about two feet above the rim. We know by experience that when these fish see and catch the scent of the branches they draw away and do not come near us. Apparently, they think it is a piece of land where they could become stranded."

I've heard that one of the reasons that orcas don't kill humans is because it's a cultural thing.
I wonder how they see us...
"See son? Those land creatures are humans, very low in fat, slow swimmers, not interesting for our diet or our playtime.
They often help our youngsters when they get stuck on the beach. Some of them are evil and kidnap children with giant floaters that emit powerful high frequencies. It's better to not attack them for now..."

It's amazing that even though orcas, just like many sharks, are apex predators in the ocean, there's hardly any incident of orcas preying on humans. And orcas are much more intelligent than sharks. Most sharks don't actively hunt human either, but there are a few shark attacks every year. Why the difference?

+JzN 2010 good thing there has never been an attack made on humans in the wild. It is a universal understanding, and clearly thier intelligence is very high.

+Detail Army What happens when its not taught for various reasons? how would they know not to attack. Interesting facts, still dangerous.

No it's actually not. If you know anything about these mammals, they have never killed a human in the wild, and eat sharks as a primary source of food in certain areas. As you may observe the mother is keeping the calves away and showing them how humans are not a source of food. I have a friend that studies them, they are safer to be around than other humans....sadly.

WOWWWW ! Beautiful drone footage, fantastic job !
I got nervous the way the Dad was sniffing at the swimmer's feet !
And Mom had, what, a t-shirt in her mouth ?
Incredibly nice, large dolphins !!!! I wonder if they have color vision, so they can see the red hat and tell that she's not a seal ?

Что делает этот человек? А вдруг косатка напала бы на него приняв за котика? Потом бы все сказали что косатка безжалостный убийца. Нельзя провоцировать.

Lol, I instantly got banned from the r/UNBGBBIIVCHIDCTIICBG subreddit for FOURTY-FIVE days because I commented in a post that this video didn't really fit there. I would just like everyone to know how shitty those mods and their nonsensical rules are. That's what I get for subscribing to a subreddit because the name is funny even though the content sucks. XD

Since these are New Zealand orcas, I imagine they do actually know Dr Ingrid Visser and are familiar with humans. She often swims with them and I believe knows them all by name!

Forget all the oohs and aahhhs.... This woman is a fuckin' A1 idiot. Projecting her own La La Land human emotions onto a Marine Apex Predator in its own environment was folly of a grievous nature. For a brief moment in time she was on the menu. They were not playing they were foraging. She is an Apex Shit For Brains.
