I use a nose plug and breath with my mouth. To equalize I simple force air into my sinuses. The nose is plugged so equalization is achievable.

Since you can breathe through either your nose or mouth with a full face snorkel mask, can't you just wear a swimmers nose clip under the mask, thereby permanently pinching your nose and allowing you to equalize whenever you want? You can still breathe through your mouth.

Oh okay cause I was thinking of buying this one

Says in the description about being able to go completely underwater. Maybe you could give that one a review if you're able to get them to send you one.

Thanks so much for the videos

Even if I only require to go less than a few meters under? And is the short period of time thing due to the fogging?

I'm just asking cause I'm looking for a snorkel for my trip to the Pacific Islands but I remembered I hated having to grip my mouth on the regular ones and also hated having to make sure I don't accidentally go a tiny bit under the water so I don't choke on water haha
GivesAMinute

Shae Makaveli Hi Shae, I would only recommend if you intend to stay on the surface and if you only wish to snorkel for a short period of time.

Very often that is the only way I equalized and it feels better too I remeber either lifting off from a plane or landing I would use this technique and it would always work. You gotta figure it for yourself but really all you do is yawn but push your jaw out you don't rotate it down you push forward using your muscle in the rotating cuff.

Wow, that is a really terrible video. Doesn't explain anything!! From what I can gather: there are "plugs" that you adjust for your nasal passage size and then somehow you slide the mask on and you are equalising?? Unimpressed.

To equalize you just yawn without opening your mask

Have you tried to yawn this way underwater mate? It's very hard!
Kristerfer78954
Kristerfer78954 - 6 years ago
You Can Also equalize by Swallowing, adn your doing it wrong, your not supposwed to wiggle your jaw, well u can but its much easier to swallow to to tense your throat and push your jaw forward as if about to yawn. The jaw is hard in general So I just suggest your try the swallow tatic.
GivesAMinute

Thanks Kristerfer :) I did try a bunch of other techniques here: https://youtu.be/2UHvFJ7zXnk I agree tho, the wiggle of the jaw is not the greatest!

I always equalize by making a swallowing motion.
I know that it doesn't work with everyone, but it works in my case.
It frees your hands, but sometimes it takes time to gather enough
saliva in your mouth in order to swallow :)

Usually when I visit my uncle, we only really snorkel just off some islands in the Miami bay. Nothing special, but it's good fun. Would you figure this mask would be perfect for casual snorkeling with the occasional couple second dive?

If you are under supervision then I would say it will be ok for this usage. I found after a period of extended use my breathing was a little troublesome. Check this follow up video where I detail it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UHvFJ7zXnk&t=3s

I have issues with air pressure in my ears due to small amounts of liquid behind the eardrum via. eustachian tube dysfunction. It is possible to flex your lower jaw forward and force air through the eustachian tube but the exact method is hard to describe. It's like using your throat to block your nose from the inside and, at the same time, breathe out through your nose. If you do it correctly you should hear the sound of air movement in your ears almost like you're breathing out through your ears. The "side to side" method that the viewer described was most likely doing what I just described but on one side at a time, where you flex only one side of the jaw, lock it into the flexed position and then force air through the eustachian tube as described above.

It's very similar to yawning with your mouth closed.

I use this method to temporarily alleviate the feeling of clogged ears due to eustachian tube dysfunction. Sadly, I cannot dive as a result of that condition; diving with eustachian tube problems is highly discouraged due to the risk of inner ear problems as a result of being unable to properly equalize.

It might make more sense to look up equalization via eustachian tube.

Yeah cheers man :) There is another negative thing I found with this mask in this follow up video I made: https://youtu.be/2UHvFJ7zXnk and then I also discovered that it's VERY difficult to STAY under the water with this mask as the amount of buoyancy it holds is too large (that whole face area is one alright large bubble of air!)

Well I guess everyone is different,.. even though I can do it I know it's not all that easy to do, even for me. thanks for sharing this video though, I was really interested in the mask but it seems as though it's not all that great for going to far down under the water. Is the only problem you have with the mask equalizing?

Santiago, it's to match the pressure of the water surrounding you to the pressure inside your head when you are going down below about 1meter.

I am a professional diver, and Nicholas is right, you can equalise by wiggling your jaw... but you have to squeeze your balls, or alternatively cross your toes at the same time, for it to be effective! Hope this helps! Remember 3-4metres only, or use cotton buds before you go into the water!

Will this work in zero gravity under distilled rain water from the Andes?
Dave Double
Dave Double - 6 years ago
Nose clip. Also, not all humans are made equally. I'm a diver of 22 years and have never pinched my nose to equalize. Turns our that I have large eustachian tubes (look it up). I'd be able to use this mask no problem but... and this is a big but... if the mask isn't tempered glass you'd need to be careful with the pressure. Pressure doubles in the first 10m and you get an extra 14.7psi at 10m.
GivesAMinute
GivesAMinute - 6 years ago
Thanks again mate. Check this video I made trying a nose clip: https://youtu.be/2UHvFJ7zXnk And everyone having a different anatomy is exactly my point: it's why I cannot equalise without pinching my nose :)

Unless you are able to take a breath underwater, you CAN'T equalize. Also saliva. Saliva makes an excellent defog. It's free and in unlimited supply. Just spit into a dry mask, rub it around and rinse it out. Just don't wait too long to get in or use a mask that's already wet, otherwise it's useless. :)
Cookiofshadows2
Cookiofshadows2 - 6 years ago
Maybe I'm just biased against the mask. I'll question pretty much anything that isn't made by any brand my buddy carries in his shop. As for the spit thing, the way I told you works all the time for me and my buddies. Maybe it's just a difference in design between your mask and mine. Perhaps it's a difference in water temperature. I'm quite used to diving in the colder waters of Eastern Canada and I've never really been anywhere else. We may not have much sea life in comparison to, say, the Bahamas, but divers still come from all over to see the uniqueness of it. You should give the spit method one more shot. Try both ways. :)
GivesAMinute
GivesAMinute - 6 years ago
Ahhhh ok so you are talking about SCUBA.... we're on a different path here man, this is for snorkel (but I agree the principals are somewhat similar). I disagree with you tho, I can equalise without taking a breath easily in any other mask where I can pinch my nose :)

With the spit method I am literally hearing the exact opposite of this. I've hear you rub spit in with a small amount of sea water and DON'T rinse at all. The people who have recommended this have all sworn it to be the only way it works, so I am not sure who is right! lol
Cookiofshadows2
Cookiofshadows2 - 6 years ago
Sorry. Replied before I clicked the link. You really should give the spit one another chance. Make sure the mask is dry, spit into it and rub it around WITHOUT mixing sea water into it, and then rinse it.
Cookiofshadows2
Cookiofshadows2 - 6 years ago
I'm a scuba diver. We have an air source strapped to our back. Or sides if you're certified for side mount diving. And seriously, try the saliva thing. Pretty much every diver I know does it. I even do it when I take my mask for just swimming. The last dive I did, there were at least ten of us all spitting into our masks. :)

How exactly does one take a breath underwater? You cannot breathe in with this mask under the surface nor can you breathe in with a conventional snorkel? I tried a method of anti fog using toothpaste here: https://youtu.be/2UHvFJ7zXnk but it didn't work :(

first off im getting very interested in snorkeling and I read that you can swallow because equalizing is done by popping your ears also why do you want to equalize what happens if you dont?
GivesAMinute
GivesAMinute - 6 years ago
Hi Tiger. Swallowing certainly does work for me when I am on land, but under water I find it does not work to the requirement that pinching and blowing does. If you don't equalise you run the risk of bursting your ear drum as the pressure difference between the water and inside your head is too different.
Colby
Colby - 6 years ago
How do you even get pressure on your ears if you only go right under the surface of the water?!? I can go super deep into a pool Then I have to equalize... but just going right below the surface you dont have to... this video is dumb
GivesAMinute
GivesAMinute - 6 years ago
Cheers for your thoughts Colby. This video was not meant to prove at what depth do you start to feel pressure, but more can you equalise by wiggling your jaw in this mask. I could have shot this video on land while wearing the mask, the depth of the water is irrelevant. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts :)

I'm not too familiar with the term "equalize" because I'm not a diver. But if equalize means when you pop your ears, then i have some advice. On an airplane when I travel sometimes the airpressure hurts the inner ear. I have found that when I'm on an airplane if i "Yawn" my ears get relieved of the pressure. So I think that Yawning will depressurize the or equalize the ears. just my thought on this.

Earplugs do nothing to match the pressure of the water to your inner ear pressure, all they do is stop water from entering your ear canal.

For me, I equalize by lowering the back of my tongue as far down as I can (a lot like yawning) which opens the channels to my ears. It works for me about 98% of the time. Some days my ears are really stubborn.

it just needs a practice. Catch yourself on yawning, and feel those muscles which do that. At the end, you do not need to move the jaw or tongue to engage those muscles, but jaw movement and tongue movement really may help, tested it now and yeah, those are definitely good recommendations.
Or imagine a situation when you really wish to yawl, but you really wish to hide the fact that you yawl, that engages those muscles you need.
I remember as the kid it was the hard part to catch what needs to be done, but in the subway, you need that often enough(in the place where I live) to have an incentive to learn and time to practice.

Also, you block the nose channel the same way as when you speak or blow cheek's

Condre3000
Condre3000 - 6 years ago
Yeah, its my "go to" method.  If I am wearing swimmers googles I have to plug my nose anyway as the motion basically pulls in water through them if I don't.

The best way I can describe is that it's like yawning without fully opening the mouth (cuz you'll enjoy a mouth full of water if you do).  I can do it without opening my jaw, but its a little harder to get results.  I also find that it also helps to tilt my chin up as it naturally pulls down the tongue and throat slightly.

Actually, you can equalize but is not just about moving the jaw. there's an exercise we do to warm up before singing in which you kind of have to yawn with your lips close, as you move the jaw to every possible directions making a space inside the mouth by pressing your tongue down and opening the throat as much as you can, that allows your ears to equalize the pressure by dilating the conducts that connect them to the throat. it's easy to do.

I don't see why they couldn't make a portion of this in silicon, so you could pinch your nose. You could easily make the arguement that a mask and snorkel would be easier, but this product has the potential to solve two problems. I have facial hair, and I like having facial hair. As any diver knows, hair in your mask means water gets in. I'm 27 years old, but if I shave I look 14, I need my beard. I also like the idea of having a mounted snokel over your head, rather than a conventional loose hanging snorkel.

To be fair, I think it was created for people who are uncomfortable with the idea of alternate methods of breathing, and I guess it works fine for people who just want to sample the reef, and not the full experience. Still it's a shame. And because they've tried and failed at it, others will be more reluctant to attempt. By the way, saw your powerbreather episode. If you're ever in Fiji again, have a go at Mana Island. It's a tiny island with just two affordable ''resorts''. It's occupied mainly by drunken European backpackers/divers, like my fine self, which is the best possible company XD They have a reef named ''the supermarket'' for its broad variety of wildlife(including manta rays) and they have a rich population of white and black reefsharks. Saw 8 white tips within 30 mins on the very first dive and without bait.

What does "equalize" mean? I understand what the word means, but in the context of snorkeling??? Does it just mean "popping" your ears? What is the point of doing that? I went snorkeling for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I noticed that when I went down a few feet, my ears kinda hurt.
GivesAMinute

It's exactly this - you "pop" your ears to equalise the pressure from within your head to match the water pressure surrounding you (if you don't you will experience increasing pain the deeper you dive).

Something I learned when scuba diving without actually knowing what i was doing.
Voluntary tubal opening (not everyone can learn this due to genetics).
How to do it: Contract the muscles in your soft palate (the back of the roof of your mouth) and throat. It should feel like yawning with your mouth closed, like you might do when trying to be polite during a boring conversation.
What it does: Tensing and stretching the muscles pull the eustachian tubes open. If you get good enough at this technique, you can hold your tube open for continuous equalization.

I don't move my yaw at all, it's impossible to see.

When I try holding my nose and blowing, and feel that feeling in the ears, I noticed the feeling is familiar, I can cause that feeling with just controlling the muscles in and around my ears. (at least I'm pretty sure that's the feeling you get.)
Is it possible for anyone else to equalize with directly controlling the muscles in and around the ear?

Edit: After looking around I found its called BTV. Source (search on Wikipedia "ear clearing," It's the last one in the "methods" section.)

There's no way that will work - you would have to blow a HUGE amount to get any kind of seal - don't forget there is all the air in front of you face and also in the snorkel tube. It just wouldn't be practical to do this every time you went under. And lets not forget how blowing into the mask creates fog too...

Kayler de Jesús anytime brother. its offical. my wife and I booked at the South Seas resort on the island for aug. using trip advisor we got 15% off and $25 a day to spend there. 3 days cost us $1,100 but we didnt just get a room. we got a 2 bedroom 1000sq foot villa on the beach complete with entire kitchen. apparently they have parasailing and water skies too.
I hope you have a blast when you're down that way.

Kayler de Jesús its south west all the way at the end of FL. 4 hour drive for us. we stay at Tween waters Inn. nothing fancy but 1 of the cheaper places on the island at $175 a night. great view of the ocean. this august we will be staying at South Seas Island Resort. its a massive resort on the island. I think we'll probably end up paying $300+ a night. at tween waters its great. we have the beach to ourselves or at most maybe 6 other people are on it. there is also The Jensons. that's supposed to be private. Down load Trip advisor app and look those 3 places up. its more of a private get away trip then anything else. I'm not sure where any fantastic snorkeling places are. I mostly see generic fish and crabs lol. dolphins were swimming a few 100 meters out from where I was but didn't have the balls to go out that far. especially since there's no life guards and no one else was around but my wife.

Kayler de Jesús I'm also a noob. wife and I found a spot here in FL with calm clear blue waters called Captiva Island. I could see the fish just from going in waist deep. I had to buy a snorkel and swim out into the ocean. found this. bought it and instantly hooked. ive had mine since 2016. absolutely love it. it does fog. but you can add Qik Spit to it and fix that.

Davin Bertelmann
Davin Bertelmann - 6 years ago
GivesAMinute Im a spearfisherman and often have moments when i need to equalize but have my hands full with spear, fish, tools etc, and so use the jaw movement method of equalizing and can vouch that brett is very much correct. 1) you need to first have pressure on your ears before you do it 2) its not simply moving your jaw back and forward. You really have to tense all the muscles in the back of your jaw, AND ears. If done done correctly, your jaw and jaw muscles and ear should all move outward and up with the motion.
GivesAMinute
GivesAMinute - 6 years ago
These are tests Brett. You can equalise and feel the effect in or out of the water.

Tyler Raber
Tyler Raber - 6 years ago
Also, personally in order to equalize this way, I pull my jaw back and open the back of my throat almost as if to yawn, but not actually opening my mouth. You can combine this motion with a swallowing motion as well.

hmmmm... edit found this little bit

"Voluntary Tubal Opening
Tense Your Throat and Push Your Jaw Forward
Tense the muscles of the soft palate and the throat while pushing the jaw forward and down as if starting to yawn. These muscles pull the Eustachian tubes open. This requires a lot of practice, but some divers can learn to control those muscles and hold their tubes open for continuous equalization."

Tyler Raber

the problem with this is that that technique works to equalize when the pressure outside is lesser than the pressure inside; however, in this case, you are attempting to do the opposite. Therefore, it doesn't work.
GivesAMinute
GivesAMinute - 6 years ago
I don't think this is correct Tyler, the pressure is the same whether you are wearing this and going down 3 meters or wearing a regular snorkel mask and going down 3 meters.

You are right, its not for diving, its great if you want to snorkel and float along on the surface though. Thank you so much Storm! I have no problem breath after a few minutes with it (but I have since read it is not so healthy to do this). I really appreciate the support man :)

GivesAMinute this is from scubaguru.com

Baby Shampoo – Here is a defog solution that is catching on in popularity. Baby shampoo is inexpensive, comes in travel size containers, is biodegradable, and won’t sting the eyes. It can be applied directly in small amounts or mixed with water and delivered through a spray bottle. Many charter boat operators are going with the spray bottle solution next to the rinse bucket. The steps, you guessed it, are pretty much the same as above:
• Simply dab or squirt the baby shampoo on the inside lens of a DRY mask and rub evenly with clean fingers (no sunscreen residue– sunscreen will remove the surfactant).

Maybe he meant to yawn or to swallow. With my experience on planes, yawning equalizes the pressure.

Thanks Sniper :) I honestly cannot comment as I'm not really a seasoned diver :) I just now what works for me and how I like it :)
Sniper's Shot Gaming
Sniper's Shot Gaming - 6 years ago
GivesAMinute I know that if one flies a lot he or she eventually gets used to the pressure change and the do not need to equalize; their bodies do it automatically. Is this the same in diving?
GivesAMinute
GivesAMinute - 6 years ago
Thanks Sniper. Oddly enough I can definitely equalise on a plane by swallowing but it doesn't seem to work in the ocean for me :(
Ewan Wilkinson

If you wiggle your jaw a bit more forward rather then to the sides (try moveing you jaw in a full horizontal circel) then you'll feel it. You can also try to jawn and then keep your mouth closed (thats a bit more difficult) :-)
GivesAMinute
GivesAMinute - 6 years ago
I gotta say I did try for longer than is in the video and for the life of me I cannot get the wiggle method to work for me :(

you don't wiggle - You simulate yawning and you'll pop your ears just like when you hold your nose. Havent you ever yawned and felt the pressure build in your ears?
GivesAMinute
GivesAMinute - 6 years ago
The instructions I had were to wiggle the jaw back and forth, so I tried it :)
Frenchdayz
Frenchdayz - 6 years ago
I feel like those who can equalize without pinching their nose are those who also get the urge to cough when cleaning their ears with a cotton bud.
GivesAMinute
GivesAMinute - 6 years ago
Bizarre! I don't doubt it. I wish we still had gills sometimes! :)
Frenchdayz
Frenchdayz - 6 years ago
GivesAMinute Apparently it has its roots from when we were fish. The ear is located in the area where we would have had gills, and if you stick a cotton bud in a fish's gills, it would probably want to cough too.

i usually equalise just by forcing the first part of a yawn where you feel it in your ears... if you know what i mean. No need for plugging my nose, but maybe its something not everyone can just do.
GivesAMinute
GivesAMinute - 6 years ago
Not exactly correct man, a lot of people can equalise without holding their nose, unfortunately I am not one of them.

you dont need to pinch your nose to equalize, try yawning only half way with your mouth closed.

Renato Correia
Renato Correia - 6 years ago
If those masks had nose's plug like scuba full-face does, you could equalize with it
GivesAMinute
GivesAMinute - 6 years ago
Wow that sounds so cool!! And I think that's how they should be
Renato Correia
Renato Correia - 6 years ago
the nose plugs of scuba full-face actually are built-in mask. When you rise your jaw upward your nose is blocked by then. thats how your equalize with.

I've actually got some nose plugs that I am going to try wearing and re-testing :)

Brother, here is a cheap trick to equalize. Buy a swimmers nose clip. It's a few bucks but it will pinch your nose and allow you to blow out your nose enough to equalize. You have to learn not to blow too hard (which is bad for you anyway). There you go! Enjoy.

Nicolas again (Nick) sorry i thought i had said either wiggle your jaw or swallow a few times, i tried this again my self and your right the jaw thing is hard in this mask (works while diving ) but i did manage to equalise swallowing often. I tend to only go down max 6m so maybe thats the catch hope that helps happy snorkeling

Mate, I think it's something you can do or not do, but as I say I've never had a problem with it. I just kind of move my jaw forward and it clears my ears .... What can I say
GivesAMinute
GivesAMinute - 6 years ago
Bizarre. I guess I'm doing it wrong? I'd like to learn how to do it tho! You got any other advice on things to try to get it to work?
Pete R
Pete R - 7 years ago
I've been wondering about getting one of those. When I scuba, I rarely clear my ears by pinching my nose. Instead, I swallow to equalize. You can often hear me on the mask mounted GoPro making 2 quick sucking noises to sort of build up saliva and then I swallow. I was wondering if that would work for this mask.
GivesAMinute
GivesAMinute - 7 years ago
Yeah Peter, from my testing it's not possible. I also made a larger review of the unit here: https://youtu.be/mtwUcQgIqns I wouldn't recommend this one for your needs.

I've done the jaw wiggle thing when driving thru the hills and it works great. Just move your jaw left and right and you should hear your ear canal click and clear. Other trick is to chew chewing gum but maybe that's not safe while diving..

Can you open your eyes while underwater? I can't..
