Snorkeling Puerto Morelos from Shore - 2015

This is the third year I have used my Olympus Tough TD-820 camera. I put the camera on a small flexible tripod with a rock attached in the center (held in by elastics) which stabilizes the camera underwater while snorkeling. This also allows me to set the camera down on the bottom sand or on rocks. I do not put the camera on coral or sponges (I am a biologist and would not damage the environment). I also do not feed the fish to bring them close, since that changes the species distribution over time. When I float back to the surface, the fish are not bothered by the camera and will swim close to it. After a few minutes I dive back down and retrieve the camera and look for the next spot where fish are gathering. Sometimes I dive down and follow the fish, so the weighted tripod really helps to stabilize the camera while in motion. If snorkeling in Puerto Morelos, this is the only good spot to see a lot of fish and coral without paying $25 for a trip to the reef. The reef is very shallow (less than 8 feet), you must wear a life jacket and you get 45 minutes each at two different spots. I prefer to snorkel for several hours at a time and do not enjoy wearing a life jacket, so I prefer to snorkel from shore. I have snorkeled up and down the beach as far as you can go and still be in Puerto Morelos, and have found that there is only one good spot (shown in the video). It is an easy, less than 5 minute swim out to the rocks from shore. See my other videos where I identify the fish and also snorkel the reef. This movie was edited from a 1 hour version in Hi-Def. I hope you enjoy the video. I highly recommend the snorkeling spot shown here and a tour of the reef to fully appreciate the snorkeling that can be found here.

Thanks for the tip but you arrived on the boat, could I, let's say, walk to the beach and snorkel, or I will get harassed into paying their $25?

Guess what. You are ruining PM for the future with these videos. If you want to keep it as it is today... please remove this video.

how big is the rocky area? is it something you would spend a few hours investigating or a few days?

Doug I love your videos and the spot by the Ojo . I share your video on Trip Advisor under the title , free shore snorkeling with a long running discussion , I hope you don't mind . I post many places as Juan Rojo and always put Free Shore snorkeling in those titles too . I didn't see the blue angel for the first time in July 2015 but did see the largest turtle ever off the Anmar Inn and that resting float . Contact me anytime to discuss snorkeling . John

Beautiful footage. How deep is it where you are at and how many feet from shore are you. I love to snorkel but sometimes I get creeped out if I'm out too far.

Simon, the only place to see fish is not that far. From in front of the large condo unit, start to swim out but keep well to the right of the first large buoy you see. The rocks are between the first and second buoys but 40-60 yards to the south of the buoys. You should be seeing the same view as the start of this movie when looking at the beach.

Doug, When you got past the white buoy, were there any lifeguards flagging you to get back in? I did this in a few different places in Cancun and the lifeguards always whistle you down to stay within the ropes. Of course theres nothing to see while snorkeling within those boundaries...

+Alison H The orange building is about 4 properties south of Hotel Ojo de Agua, but very close to where you are staying.  The average depth is about 10 to 13 feet at most.  As you snorkel out, the water first deepens to about 17 feet, but then gets more shallow as you approach the rocks.  From shore, I swim out as far as the first large white buoy (there are two in a row perpendicular to the shore line and they are fairly close), but the rocks are quite a bit to the right of the buoy as you swim out.  Check the position of the large tower versus the beach restaurants, it should appear similar to the first scenes in the panorama of the movie shown here.

Is the orange building the Hotel de Oja? We are planning a trip here and want to snorkel and i've read that is a great place to go.

+Alison H Sorry for the late reply.  No, the orange building is a block south of your hotel and is a condo unit (doesn't look in the best of shape).  Ojo de Agua' (eye of the water) is also an underground cenote that empties into the ocean just off shore.  The fresh water mixing with the salt water creates a noticeable halocline which makes the water blurry.  Snorkeling is great but you have to locate the rocks.  It's not far from shore, and will appear just as it looks in the first 360 in the video.  Enjoy!
