When you going underwater with the snorkel in your mouth, the only thing stopping the water rushing into your lungs is your tongue which blocks the water from coming in your mouth. If you were to blackout underwater, your tongue would no longer perform that function and you would be introducing water into your airway so ditch the snorkel on descent as its a drowning hazard. Hope this helps :)

As a diving enthusiast myself I can see how these pristine waters in a beautiful day can be irresistible for a nice dive but..."There are warnings for gators everywhere but you never see them"??? Sounds eerily like something I heard before. A friend of mine from my college days lost an arm to a gator attack diving in the FL Everglades. I wasn't there that day only because I still had some pretty nasty diving ear pain from diving in the FL Keys a few days earlier and I decided not to go. Not saying you shouldn't do it, but I hope you know what you're doing...
