On vacation and staying at the Marriott, Ko Olina Beach Resort on Oahu. My first day here I went snorkeling. I got in at the lagoon, and went out the channel out into the open ocean. I went up coast to the next lagoon, turned around and came back. These are a few of the creatures I saw.

nice shots - I was just at Ko Olina about a month ago and was not comfortable in the water with it being so murky and an top of it, it was partially cloudy so made it even harder to see - something nibbled on my feet as I was getting out

Yeah. The only chance you'll get swimming in a less murky Ko Olina lagoon is if you beat the crowd and get there early. By the way, all that silt at the bottom of the lagoon is what causes the murkiness. Especially when people are bobbing up and down the water moving their legs, the current from the movement of the leg causes the silt to go up.

Yeah, it can be pretty murky there, especially in the lagoons. Outside the lagoons it still had a haze to the water, and there was a lot more current. It took some timing to feel safe diving it (incoming tide for the return). If you want clear, it was really nice a few miles up the beach at the Power Plant.

hey where at ko olina was this? In the lagoons or just outside them? if it is outside the lagoons ias it dangerous current out there i've heard its pretty dangerous but i have done electric beach kahe point and i know that has pretty strong current...? really interested cuz i live on the island and love snorkeling.

+TatzuFilms It gets the same swell as electric beach, so it would not be any flatter. It was murkier than electric beach, and there were fewer people in the water. To be honest the only part that felt unsafe about electric beach was the noob spearos shooting wildly at everything. I kept expecting to take a shaft to the face as they blasted yet another rock. Really though, I would say they have the same level of safety.

The snorkelling inside the lagoons is pretty murky and there are not that many fish. The current on the outer coast was not bad, but on a strong tidal exchange it can be difficult to swim in, or out, of the lagoon channels. Once in the ocean we just had surge, waves and not much current. For the week we were there I went outside the lagoon every day and felt quite comfortable. We also saw local speros out there every day working the area. If there was a good swell hitting that side of the Island I would avoid diving there for sure, but it was great when the waves were down.

From just a few feet down to about 20 feet at the deepest.

Thanks, it is at 2:50. I sort of ran into it as I was filming the turtle exit the cave.

All beaches in So Cal have the potential for spiny lobster. Their range extends to just beyond Point Conception, but they are only common South of there. Your best bet for finding a good area for lobster is to find a remote rocky stretch of coastline. If the access is too easy, there will likely not be very good lobster diving. Early in the season lobster tend to be really shallow (just a few feet deep) and move out as storms push them. When it calms, they move back shallow.
