Kayakers, or anyone who knows...What are the risks here? Obviously the fast impact at bottom, but did he know if his kayak would hit nose first? Is that the ideal impact? I assume that would lessen the hit. If kayak hit flat would it be worse or even survivable? Would air content of water, surging & turbulence soften the impact? Is there risk of getting caught/pinned under the falls?

Hey Crooked Halo! You should check out our latest feature film "Chasing Niagara." It's available on iTunes, Amazon. etc. Or Blu Ray off our website RiverRoots.com It will have all the answers to your questions and then some. Thanks!

Gravity: 9.80665 m/s^2

Velocity on impact: 33.6134 m/s 121.0085 km/h 75.19123 mph

The aeration in the water allows him to slow down over a certain period of time. So not sure what the g force on him was, but crazy for sure.
Crooked Halo

So his speed is 75 mph, but I wonder if impact was softened by turbulence, air content, hitting nose first or anything else?

+SteepVisions Nice to see there are other Gnerds out there! Here are the equations, which are fun to use to calculate not only speed of an airborne buddy but also the height jumped!

f = (m_1)(a), IOWS force equals mass of Rafa times acceleration of gravity

But

f=(G)(m_1)(m_2)/r^2, where G is the gravitational constant, m_1 is Rafa, m_2 is mass of earth, and r is distance.

Combine equations
(G)(m_1)(m_2)/r^2 = (m1)(a)

Therefore acceleration of gravity a = G(m_2)/r^2, where r changes. This would give a more precise but negligibly different answer. Unfortunately even the number of significant figures for SteepVisions answer is too high since the height is probably not 189.00000 feet. We need a precise height measurement or assume 75.2 mph.

That could be remedied using kinematic equation dist = (1/2)(a)(t^2), where t is time in air, so long as the video clip used to obtain t is verified to be in real time. But this again assumes a is const so Law of Universal Gravitation wouldn't be usable without physically measuring the height of the drop to at least 7 decimal places.

I am not taking into account Einstein's theory of general relativity, which would change things another negligible amount.

I've never touched a kayak but I just want to understand the technique of this, even going over smaller big falls, how does it work? It just seems like they would hit the water so hard , how do you not get injured/killed going over a damn waterfall in a kayak hah

+Harry Halfhide Right. Every Boston boy jumped Swingles quarry in my day (some dead, to be sure), but it was a rite du passage. The big jump was 72' when I did it. Even in still water it seriously depends on how you strike. We had monkeys on ropes all round (called angels) who could swing down to get your body if you lost your breath. You need to reduce the size of your body to its straightest. I can't imagine doing it in kayak. BTW, Swingles was filled in by the Big Dig. Just too many fatalities for the sissies (or the undertakers) to handle. PS: Always wear a metal jockstrap at those heights (oh, and don't kill yourself intestate; write a will).
Harry Halfhide
Harry Halfhide - 10 years ago
The water at the bottom is churned up and air-ated, so the impact is softer. If you were to launch of a 180ft bridge with flat water underneath the impact would then definitely break the boat and the paddler.
Mcnoobster Baddabing
Mcnoobster Baddabing - 10 years ago
+George R.R Martin HAT Majority of kayakers survey the waterfalls they intend to leap off of beforehand. If you notice in the beginning of the video, the phone call he made to his buddy states that they have been watching the activity of the waterfall for the right time to do so. I'm sure they're well aware of the depth of the pool they will land in. Yes, the idea is to be vertical and before impact cross your arms and push your head against them into the hull of the kayak. This closes the gap in which the buoyance of the kayak will force against the kayaker upon impact.
George R.R Martin HAT
George R.R Martin HAT - 10 years ago
yhea back/spine injury looks guaranteed with this crazy shit. but if they drop vertical how do they figure they won't impact the bottom with the nose
Johannes
Johannes - 10 years ago
extreme paddlers like these guys receive injuries very often! broken noses, shoulders, etc...
when you run a high waterfall, the most important thing is to get your boat  vertical to the surface before hitting the water. otherwise you could easily broke your back or something else.........

It kind of angers me how little any one knows about this sport because they come here and comment on things they know nothing about. The skill was there and he proved that. Also who cares if it doesn't benefit anyone it doesn't hurt anyone either. He knew he could of died and if he did he wouldn't have been the first kayaker to die. At least it would have been doing something he loved instead of a heart attack from eating too much KFC. Doesnt' matter though cause he LIVED!

I think you were reaching for a contraction, you're, but fell short of the mark. I am not acting like I am smart, I am. Tried to be gracious in my previous response but you appear bent on being a protagonist. "I speak English and live in the US." God help the US
surferdude330
surferdude330 - 11 years ago
Wow! Better to be silent And thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt. You allege to speak English. You have the cursing down but might want to stay clear of big words. I don't have all night but just a few examples from your last post...using the word oxymoron's in context with my previous post is nonsensical. And it should be plural, not possessive. In your (word used properly) last sentence
Ricky Bobby
Ricky Bobby - 11 years ago
Try no shit Sherlock. I speak English and live in the US. Your statement was full of oxymoron's. I understand what sarcasm is. Your acting like your smart but your sentence made little sense.
surferdude330
surferdude330 - 11 years ago
The name Einstein is often referenced sarcastically to imply someone is not very bright. Your not getting that along with not being able to construct a grammatically correct or cogent sentence leads me to think English is not your primary language. If so, I apologize. There is no way I coud post on a thread like this in a second language. Peace bro.
Ricky Bobby
Ricky Bobby - 11 years ago
That makes very little sense. Einstein was a inventor not a doctor. Also if I were a idiot I wouldn't be able to make a cure. However if Einstein was alive maybe he would invent something to drop of a waterfall safely or something to keep your hands off the keyboard because you clearly can't write a sentence that makes one bit of sense.

Respect to Tyler and Rush for what they do and what the contribute to the sport, having met Rush in Mexico briefly, he's a bloody good bloke and passionate film maker. I have been kayaking for 5 years now and only after my time in Mexico last year did I finally feel confident to to run some big slides and waterfalls. Great passion, belief and vision, very inspirational to kayakers and film makers alike!!

People climb dangerous mountains because they are there, even though many may have died trying before their own attempt. Same for kayaking waterfalls, I believe. As long as new challenges exist, some human being somewhere will rise to those challenges. While I lack both the skills and the desire to conquer waterfalls, I respect those who take those calculated risks. Kudos to Tyler; glad you made it with minimal injuries! Sorry about your paddle, lol.

solswis... I'm afraid you are completely wrong. The precision of strokes, balance, and technique utilized to run a drop this big takes years and years of practice. "Barrels" are completely different because the person does nothing... Running waterfalls is similar to high diving. Furthermore, putting yourself in the right spot at the lip of this monster is harder than you might think... Angle entry and air awareness take years of mastery, and the slightest mistake can deem fatal...
solswis
solswis - 11 years ago
Talent? Really? People have gone over Niagra Falls in "barrels" - would you call them talented? Other than willing to kill himself for a record and the ability to point a boat in the right slot, I don't see Tyler's talent on display here. What talents and skills did he use just after going over the drop - prayer? This is a stunt. I suspect he used more kayaking skills in the rapid approaching the falls.

To the average person probably nothing. How about people in a third world country who use water to travel? Or how about someone in a extreme survival situation? It could definitely be useful information. Did I say this guy going off a waterfall would save the world or cure cancer? No. Only that if people don't do crazy things we wouldn't make discoveries whether they're important or not. Wake up before you talk shit and stop posing to two month old comments. Reason with that bitch.

People enjoy different things. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean they are posturing or trying to prove themselves. They share it with the world because it is what they love to do, and there is nothing wrong with sharing your passions. There is, however, something innately wrong with insulting or shitting on another's passions. You do you, and let others be themselves. But thanks for making it easy to spot one more cunt in the world. and that's you, you cunt.

Ricky Bobby - 11 years ago
Everyone thought the wright brothers were crazy! Nobody then understood why they were doing this and they thought it was pointless but now theres aircraft's. If the wright brothers plan failed you would just think they were idiots to. You don't know dropping off a waterfall has no benefits to society. He has already proven if someone HAD to do this it can be done. He could suggest things to make it safer or the dangers associated with waterfalls. He could save others lives through his knowledge.
gillettecrackers
gillettecrackers - 11 years ago
No. The limits that you cite are limits pushed to either further the development of humanity or further the development of science. In the case of the Wright brothers, their plan was based on scientific concepts and planning. In this case, it's a man kayaking off a waterfall, knowing that he could die...for no good reason.
Ricky Bobby
Ricky Bobby - 11 years ago
People just shouldn't push limits then? The wright brothers shouldn't have tried to fly a plane, martin luther king shouldn't have stood up for rights, and our military shouldn't fight to protect our country? Where would our society be if people didn't do dangerous things to push the limits of possibility and necessity? There will always be cowards and heros. If my probability of dying was high at least it would be for something I believe in not a warm comfy fat cat bed talking crap on youtube.

Additional risk presents itself at 2:37 in the final drop segment. You can see the falls take a bump on the way down. The bump is within sight of anyone planning on doing the drop, but who would notice it until hitting it? Any unexpected bump on the drop could alter one's orientation from feet(-on-pegs) first to back-of-the-neck first, or sideways or whatever. It seems pretty obvious that he could have easily been killed if his orientation was suddenly bumped out of alignment. Very risky stuff!

I wasn't commenting on the practical applications of lithium, I was merely correcting Matthias' comment which incorrectly stated that Titanium is the lightest metal on Earth.

The lightest metal in the periodic table is lithium. However, the metal with the highest strength to weight ratio is titanium. Get it right.

Maybe he was making a reference of the lightest metal on Earth floating, and being sarcastic of the way he said "I'm surprised he didn't sink."; because if he had balls of Titanium, it is what popped him back and kept him alive because his balls are "FUCKING TITANIUM.".

Jamie Greenhalgh
Jamie Greenhalgh - 12 years ago
@jumper5971 depends what you want to do. Agent and kingpin are straight freestyle boats so great for busting moves but will be less forgiving on a river. juice will be more forgiving and is a very nice boat and pretty playful on a river. If you go BIG then get a Nomad like he has. I love my one!

Jawdropping, amazing, incredible! Unfortunately, I speak of the haters leaving comments about how there is no skill involved in this descent "just floating over a fall and hoping for the best" and such. Without a doubt, none of you have ever sat in a kayak and pushed yourself from a shore, let alone to any kind of limit. More than likely, leaving your uninformed comment will be your SECOND most important contribution to this planet...... the first being fertilizer when you pass and are burried.

MGoose66

@MrDarinWarren Having seen many waterfalls, yet none that big, I can tell you taht a drop like that would have a significant plunge pool. Rocks would be VERY unlikely as the pounding force of the water, over 1000's of years, including with flood and debris, wipes such stuff out. Scuba would be impossible. If there's no obvious current deviations, it's pretty good. Some people float dummies - they probably did - to see where they spit out. Sensational effort though, eh?

There's research and science that go into improving our lives, or new technology, none of which is shown here. Saying that this in any way shape or form in some way anything other than a dare-devil pushing his luck for the hell of it, is like saying that Evel Knievel's X-2 jump helped NASA make better space shuttles.

A kayaker drowned last year going over the 12 meter Lundbreck waterfall that doesn't have anything close to the volume this fall has . He was held under by the recirculating water at the base for 10 minutes. He was an expert kayaker and had successfully gone over this waterfall many times before, as have many other kayakers. One is taking a random chance for death doing this.

Congrats! I'd love to hear more about the landing, foamy or not so much? Come on people, he said it was his third planning trip in three weeks, it wasn't without thought, planning, skills and a LOT of guts!

Carandme, what's that you said about brains when you use "then" instead of "than?" Men climb mountains, bungy jump, skate board and break or attempt to break all kinds of records. Yes, they do have guts, but when they do these things, they use brains too.

Re-freakin'-donkulous! The best part is the broken paddle! (and of course the expression, "It's just a matter of buckin' up and huckin' it!") Totally amazing!

Does anyone happen to know the songs that play during this video? Especially the one that plays in the last 30 seconds? I absolutely love it and want to listen to the entire song. Tyler you are one brave SOB. Congratulations on your accomplishment!
