The Surfaris were an American surf rock band formed in Glendora, California in 1962. They are best known for two songs that hit the charts in the Los Angeles, California area, and nationally by May 1963: "Surfer Joe" on the A-side and "Wipe Out" on the B-side of a 45 RPM single.

Jim Fuller, lead guitarist with the Surfaris and co-writer of their hit,
"Wipe Out" (#2* in 1963 and #16 in 1966) died Friday (March 3rd, 2017)
in Monrovia, California. Known as the "Godfather of Surf Music", he was
69 years old...
May he R.I.P.
* "Wipe Out" peaked at #2 for one week, and the #1 record for that week
was "Fingertips, Part Two" by Little Stevie Wonder. The B-Side of "Wipe
Out", "Surfer Joe", also made the Top 100, it reached #49 and stayed on the chart for
six weeks, the quartet had one other Top 100 record, "Point Panic", it
peaked at #49 in 1963...

Now there was also another Safaris right? the guys who recorded Wipe Out or was it the same band that your folks handled
I used to like the Mothers Of Invention in the 60's. Back then I thought Zappa was from Chino. But he was from all over So. Cal. The arrest that I knew of was the one at Chaffey College where he was busted for Streaking.
The turtles was one of my favorite Bands. I like their first hit "It Ain't Me Babe" reminds me of the summer of 65". And "You Showed Me"
For being a small town there was a lot going on here. I heard that old diner next door to the old gas station on Foothill near Archibald was used for the original "Blob" with Steve McQueen.
"Brown Shoes -Don't Make It", is my favorite Zappa tune.
Hang Ten! Those were the days
Great song brings back memories
Und Sport?Na ja,heute Mucki-Bude,damals die erste Begegnung mit Bier und Schnaps(grins)
Nope. Woodies are wood-bodied station wagons. As the name implies, they were developed to haul passengers and luggage to and from train stations. Eventually, the wood became just trim on a metal body, then plastic with vinyl decals, and eventually disappeared.
Woodies became popular with surfers because used ones were cheap and big enough to haul boards. Some surfers did use old hearses, as well as sedan deliveries, for the same reasons.

FYI, almost all white male singers have terrible voices. A few white guys like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett had good voices, among some others. But when you look at the universe of white male singers, from 1960's and forward, most had horrible voices and loud back up music to disguise it.
On the other hand, almost every black male singer had good singing voice. Some were better than others, but I can't think of one black male singer who even approaches the description terrible.
The week it peaked at #62, the Beach Boys were at #11 with "Surfer Girl"...
