OK if you need to read up on this you should not be surfing for one common sense go to Oahu Hawaii find the Westside Makaha surf break paddle out there as close to the little hotel there as possible right through the middle of the reef Winter then go in front of any surfer and take off if your white haole boy they will let you have any wave you want take off right in front of them.very nice people.Aloha!
Scott Keagy
Scott Keagy - 6 years ago
At these surf camps with longest-wait etiquette, can you pay someone to paddle out and sit there for you? So you chill on the beach getting a massage or something, then paddle out 5 minutes before your turn? Everything else seems like common sense to anyone who has surfed long enough to not die during the paddle-out to a place like this.

Who the fuck is this Seppo idiot with his "rules"? For starters it's Indonesia, & it is NOT the "Ment-a-wais" as he says. It's the Men-tar-wees or Men-tar-whys. His Indonesian is obviously his style, not Indonesian. I'd like to see him tell me what to do. Fucking Americans. They tried this shit at Cloudbreak in Fiji too, and when they came over the Wilkes Passage we fucking gave it to them.

I am an old surfer. I’ve done everything. Since 1959. I surfed with the best, I shaped in Australia, and surfed all over. And we brought the short board into the world. George Greenough, Bob McTavish, Nat Young. Nothing changes. Drop in? You become the problem. Don’t drop in. Simple. Learn the rules.
Josh Randal
Josh Randal - 6 years ago
I surfed once. I loved it. However it just was not worth the ire. Most surfers play by the other set of rules. On the drive to the break, in the water, and at the beer house. 10% I have up a chat, the rest can join Foo.

It'll be very hard to keep track who's turn it is . Especially when it's crowded with like 40-50 guys. Also the first priority guy might let three waves go untill he took off on the fourth wave and now who'll be keeping count. But i get your rules and it's the basic ocean rule to follow. It's very hard to let kooks get the big waves, because they'll waste it. But just don't be a hog cheeser!

It's usually a few greedy bastards (usually longboarders) going for everything and then it becomes a free for all with everyone fighting for a wave.

I think some commenters here do not comprehend the difference between a resort location and a remote location. I believe different rules apply, and each set of rules can be watered down, based on the proficiency of a rider. Great skill has been navigating through newcomers ad infinitum. Resorts are capitalist bastions, but they are not going to disappear - so they have the rules set out here, usually maintained by employees. It's very shortsighted to think the rules expressed here apply (subjectively) to your own break. Jesus, come up to western Canada in 45 degree water and try prancing around on either side of the fence. Blank stares.

All localism debates aside, there are some good tips for the unsuspecting noob, I am sure these chain of islands sees complete ignorance, hence the video. Also, the barrel tip at the end is pure gold. Some of these people going for it in the video dont even look like intermediates! Its amazing to me as surfer from FL who mostly rides knee high slop.

I agree with the video, there has obviously been so many accidents that did not need to happen. Take it easy, It's all about waves and fun. Its just a bummer there are so many surfers these days. I also see the side of guys spending big bucks and wanting your quota of barrels, it can be frustrating. You need a lot of experience to surf here safely. Wish i was back in the 80's still.

This would be all well and good if every surfer could predict exactly where a wave was going to break and when...this is why we have real rules! The person closest to the peak has priority! Also, the person skilled enough to be on that PEAK HAS PRIORITY!

Taking turns...LOL...that's not how we all learned how to surf!

ummm why are ejections not cool? I dont care what is cool or not its fun
wavepark
wavepark - 6 years ago
Hi Nate, thanks for your interest and comment. Ejections are super fun, and we don't really care what's cool either. But the Mentawai Islands are 180km from the nearest hospital over open ocean; no helicopters available. So what we're saying is that when people fly off the back of a wave with an elastic leash attached to their legs, the board can fly back and cause bad injuries. Or, like happened at Lance's Left a few years ago, a surfer's board landed before he did, and he ended up breaking his neck when his head hit the board. He was paralyzed and sunk, luckily to be retrieved by his mates who were paying attention. In our opinion, to take risks like that out in the islands is not worth the "fun" factor involved. I hope that helps clear things up?

OMG,..I had to shut the video down after a couple mins. I don't think a bashing is in order like a few others, but I would just like to say I agree with surf etiquette for sure. Not sure I agree with all this wait your turn stuff. Whoever sits in the right spot gets the waves. When that takes place along with knowledge of surfing and experience, everything else falls in place. Most people who surf understand the concept and don't need it spelled out to them. As far as a surf camps concerned, I'm sure you guys do a great job pleasing money paying guests. I also get where the other passionate folks are coming from.
Just a prime example of different opinions and views. Let your surfing do the talking. No one owns the surf, there's already an understanding out there in the waves. If someones an ass, they'll hear about it from everyone else trust me. Take a surf trip to Hawaii and try to surf making rules. I lived there for 5 years, they don't play with nonsense. Better know what you're doing, show respect, and everyone gets waves.

I've never been surfing before but I will start learning to surf soon. do I go for small or big ones at this point? at what stage can I surf the barrel waves?
wavepark
wavepark - 6 years ago
Hi Locky, smaller waves break in shallower water. So you're best to get
a board that is easy for you to paddle, and start surfing in waves
that are as big as your chest when you are standing up. If you're
really a beginner, it is easiest to start in warm water in waves that
are breaking on a sandy beach. The best surfer out there is the one
having the most fun, so have lots of fun!
Stephen Apps
Stephen Apps - 6 years ago
I stopped after a minute. How many surfers turned pro respectfully waited 30 minutes until 'his turn'. Surfer deepest to the peak has priority. Try bringing your shit rule to australia haha, you will get laughed at
wavepark
wavepark - 6 years ago
Hi Stephen, thanks for watching and for your comment. Australian surfers who come to Mentawai are like any other nationality: They need to be reminded sometimes that Mentawai is not Gold Coast. All the "pros" I've surfed with in the Mentawai Islands have always been very generous and respectful. They know that they are representing their sponsors and the resort or charter boat that brought them there. There are so many cameras these days, and social media is a very meditating form of peer
pressure to do the right thing and be a nice person in the lineup. Obviously some people don't care, but I have yet to surf in the islands with any pros who come with that attitude. Most pros like giving waves away to people with less skill, at least out here.

This video is intended for people who are coming to surf here in Mentawai, and maybe people who want to be prepared so they don't waste time on their holiday trying to figure it out by making mistakes. Most people only come for 10 days, and are stoked that somebody told them whats up before they get out there. You'd be amazed how many people like to be prepared. Cheers!

jeremy edwards - 6 years ago
the only thing i don't agree with you on is the waiting my turn.. if i'm deeper than everyone else and can make the wave... guess what... I'm going.. that'sthe end of the story.. the person sitting deeper has the right way..
wavepark
wavepark - 6 years ago
Hi Jeremy, thanks for watching our video and for your comment. The problem with taking waves again and again just because you're deeper is that inevitably the question will come out, "what makes you so special?" Are you special just because you sit 10ft. to the left or right of somebody else? Does that qualify you as a better surfer because you "made the section"? We're all out here trying to catch a fleeting glimpse of the joy that a wave brings, and the reality is none of us is more special than anybody else, regardless of skill. That's my two cents anyway.

that's awesome you did this I lived on Kauai for a while and I was horrified by how many tourists get injured and killed because there is just no one to tell them how dangerous the ocean is or even walking on rocks at the edge of the ocean. Little things like this are important, no matter your skill level, if you're encountering something new.
wavepark
wavepark - 6 years ago
Hey thanks J. We're making a few videos about "surfing over reefs" for that exact reason. A lot of good surfers just assume some things, but actually there are a lot of decent surfers out there who know just enough to get themselves into trouble when they surf in big waves over shallow reefs. Stoked on the support, Cheers!

Hi Winston. These are all just suggestions to keep you safe and have a good time. Feel free to follow no rules wherever you surf, it's a free world.
But that's that thing about surfing with other people. Chances are that others with you in the lineup will also decide that there are no rules, and then your happiness and safety will rapidly diminish.

People who are learning and don't know etiquette , just plain and simply shouldn't be , surfing waves of consequence. Nor should there ever be a Private camp for the rich at an incredible wave. Many wealthy folk on roids have the worst attitude and common sense in the water. Surfing and the ocean are indeed for everyone, however, you must earn your right to surf great surf spots. If you havn't and your still feeling like you want some, you should show nothing but respect and positive vibes to those who have obviously spent more time in it the culture ( not a sport) than you.
Ignorance creates dangerous situations and egos create fights and bad vibes. Sorry people but just because you figured out how to make enough money to be at a great surf spot doesn't give you any rights in the water beyond what was just explained. Don't give a shit about us then we don't let you surf in peace and you will likely drown. Go home and make somemoreof your money and swim through that!!
Be humble and gracious then you might actually be givin a wave, learn something new and make a new friend or two.

i moved to Hawaii way back in 1979 so I could scuba dive and hopefully learn how to surf ! I got LUCKY when I met a surfer that helped me pick out the perfect surfboard for learning how to paddle and get up to surf , it was an 8' x 22" Ben Aipa.. he told me it would be a lot easier to learn on a larger board. his next tip was to get out early to beat the crowds and always stay far left or right of the crowd and just practice paddling out and trying to catch the second or third wave of a set.

In terms of transactional analysis, the subject and comments here make a fascinating psychological study.
We might say that wavepark is relating in the parent ego state, whereas nomoreluke is responding from the child ego state, and along the way, others are interjecting from all three ego states, parent, adult and child. I'm no psychologist, but I couldn't help making this insightful observation. Thank you Eric Berne ... carry on as you were chaps :)

these comments kill me! i think the bottom line is that. If you blow up a spot with people, who rarely visit and/or are unfamiliar with conditions, dangerous reactions will occur. trying to prevent the mistakes from repeating, may seem proactive but is still reactive. Mainly because (even tho most aren't kooks in their familiar places/home breaks) you bring in kooks by the boat load. I dont mean kooks in traditional sense but i mean crowds of outsiders, unfamiliar to the local conditions, situations and safety hazards. I understand the need for a video and some of the peoples needs to bash it since its a catch 22 a double edge sword kind of topic. "if you are sick tobias just take out the hair extensions"

sounds good in theory, but i just came back from down there. Many guests from your resort were burning people left and right on waves and back paddling everyone!! (especially bank vaults and rifles) Maybe they didn't watch the video or missed out on your tutorial when they were there!! As far as enforcing the "wait your turn rule" that's complete BS from what I saw. Just saying. I still had a awesome trip and got my fair share of waves but I didn't see anyone taking part in this "wait your turn" rule. It was every man for himself down there, just like anywhere else.

Bloody sad Christie, so many empty heads in the lineup:/ Personlly i thought every point in the vid was commonsense that all surfers should know:/ A serious injury when exploring, or surfing anywhere remote is something noone wants, i know, broken neck among other things:/ I would say "THINK" a little guys, but that requires brains and thats something lacking in so many surfers. Most younguns especially dont even think about the possibility of serious harm, , They all think they are immortal, guess again guys:) , that will change as they get older and have been hurt a few times..hopefully:/ As to the "taking turns". In normal non camp situations the inside guy has right of way, BUT, if you are going to patronise a camp, you abide by their rules. Noone is forcing you to go! Camps exist to serve a need, most surfers do not have the time, money or will to explore and find uncrowded perfection, ive done that for more than 35 years and i can tell you guys this, there are still a shitload of perfect waves out there rarely or never surfed, i dont have the time left to check on the many i know will be great that i havent got to yet! A few solid tips but I find that a lot in this video is addressing newbie mistakes who have no business surfing a reefbreak, let alone in the Mentawai. Maybe you shouldn't bring cooks on your surf trips and expect a certain level of experience. Then you won't have to deal with some of the nonsense described here.
Strickland Sound
Strickland Sound - 7 years ago
Erwan, there is no better system, than having turns. Being a cook is in the eye of the beholder. The mentawis is great because of these rules... take a visit to california and you'll see the opposite, cannot get a wave, it's horrible. I'd rather share, be nice and help everyone improve with their surfing than to call anyone a cook. Your young, but one day when your body is breaking down and getting old, maybe you could look back and say, I was a nice fella and shared the ocean like a gentleman.
wavepark
wavepark - 7 years ago
@Erwan Compes. Yes, it would be great if everybody ripped who came to Mentawai, but we assume that guests at least know how to stand up and travel along an open face. Fortunately we have waves suitable for beginner - intermediate. The other thing that always surprises me is how fast people improve after 10 days of surfing 6 hours a day. We'll start them slow and by the end they're taking on the big stuff.

Fuck me. What a sanctamonious asshole. I came to tear waves to shreds, not have a fucking love-in. The irony of a "Surf camp" posting a video about surfers saving themselves from themselves is outrageous. You surf camp people are pure cancer. Privatising waves all over the world and charging surfers for the privilege of surfing certain spots... Fuck you and everyone who looks like you. You should all have your camps burnt to the fucking ground. Making inaccessible spots easily accessible is absolutely fuelling crowding in locations that used to be empty. So fuck you and your hippy shit. Wanker. If you want a wave, take off deeper than me - I won't drop in. If you haven't got the balls though, get the fuck out of the water.

@wavepark, your attitude, along with all the services that you say you provide seem reasonable at first glance, however, imo, the idea of catering to people who are inexperienced surfers is where the fault lies and makes your whole approach complete nonsense and shennanigans. if you can't surf these types of waves on your own, without help, then you should not be surfing anywhere near these waves. sorry, go back to beachies until you are confident. hand-holding people who otherwise shouldn't be surfing certain types of waves is irresponsible and creates a problem for all the people who put in the time and energy, over years, to be able to surf waves like this. the fact that you provide this service for rich ppl willing to pay for it is absurd and i agree it is a huge part of what ruins surfing as a whole, though i don't need to resort to name calling to convey that notion....so yeah, before you pretentiously espouse how you are are doing anything other than making money, with your focus primarily on just that, at the expense of surfing and all of the surfers who put the time in, think about how it is you who may be endangering ppl more than anyone else in the water by bringing inexperienced ppl to places they should not be just because they are rich and expect ppl like you to cater to their absurd sense of entitlement....

shane brady

No they dont:/ These days the world is full of overpriveleged, undertalented weekend surfers that these camps cater too perfectly:/ Along with the pros, who usually get good deals in exchange for promotional vids:/ Still, these waves are available for anyone to surf, without paying the hefty rates of luxury camps! There are plenty of cheap places to stay in the Ments. Right on HTs at 10 bucks a night, lol. Boats can also be hired cheap from locals. I got nothing against camps really, once it gets serious most guys are on the beach watching:)

If they don't need customers, then you're right, who cares. I'm guessing they would prefer to have the $2500 per customer though. Plus, if they are a great resort, a lot of people would return at some point in the future. Now they lost $5000 for 2 visits and so on. But that's no big deal, right? Good for them if they don't need that money or referrals. I wouldn't try to help them on this because you actually just made me think even less of them, which I'm surprised was even possible. Now I just want to tell everyone I know to avoid this company. But then again, they don't care, do they?

SkilledMaverick - 6 years ago
Wow! I'm absolutely shocked that a business would say these things. They do have every right to defend their business, but I don't think the original comment was intended to bring down the company. Yes, it was harsh. Yes, it bashed "surf camps." But I didn't see it as an attempt to bad mouth the specific company. It's never called out by name. When they responded to the comment, they essentially bashed themselves by legitimizing the comment and giving details about their business. And, unfortunately, it does prove what the original comment was complaining about, that this person is wrong (not the same word used, just trying to be nicer). I just don't see any valid reason why that response was considered acceptable. It tarnishes their name for potential future clients. I wasn't a client before today, but I definitely won't be in the future because of this.

On that point Luke, it is "his" business, so he is entitled to say whatever the fuck he wants, just like you man:) Also, Ime not a fan of surf resorts at all!! I have never patronised one in 37 years of surfing[i am going to Hts in June for the first time though:/] BUT, without this particular surf camp, noone would be surfing this place:/ He does not own the waves, and does not say he does. If you can get there, go for it, the waves are free, lol. After decades of travelling rough finding waves all over the place ime now 57 and am happy to take it a bit slower and even have a little luxury:/ Not all the time, but some of it at least. Surf resorts for the most part are utilizing waves that without the camps would not be surfed much:/ There are so many waves out there, i find it hilarious that the bickering and petty bullshit is so full on,lol. The world is chock full of amazing waves, still plenty out there rarely surfed, or never..LOOK:) BTW, these camps are heaven for a good surfer, once it hits 8 feet, the lineup is suddenly very lonely, lol. Things have changed in 35 odd years, back in the day, you were judged on your ability. Sitting on the beach when it got big was not a good look:/ Now most guys surfing these places wont even go out when its serious:/ This was a big shock to me when a bud told me how good it was at Hts at size, but ime not complaining:) Ime there after Nias in June for a little camp luxury for a change. Calm down man, WGAF about the bullshit, lets just surf and let others sweat the small shit:/

christie and his wife run a great operation. Their camp only allows 12 guests at a time so their camp is not why the spot in front is overcrowded. The entire Mentawai island chain is over crowded. There are a hundred boats loaded with surfers of all levels of experience from all over the world. Its kind of a shit show during peak season to be honest. He is just trying to make it so people, not just his guests, can have the best, safest experience possible with so much demand of a limited resource in a limited amount of space.
p.s. As lame as it sounds, taking turns works in the Mentawais as long as everyone is playing nice in the sandbox. Even the boats full of pros follow this practice for the most part . I have a feeling nomoreluke is the one donkey fucking it up for everyone else.

I'm not aggressive towards other surfers in the water EVER. I have never and will never put anyone at any kind of risk and I will never drop in on anyone. I've surfed in Australia for years, mainly Margs, Northern Perth beaches and Northern Sydney beaches and never had a problem with people being aggressive in the water. Quite the opposite in fact. I'm not suggesting that everyone should be an idiot in the water, I'm just suggesting that this "waiting in a queue" system is absolute bullshit. Just take off deeper than me and I won't drop in. Fact is, in the Mentawais, the only reason a lineup would be particularly crowded would be because there was one of these bullshit surf camps there in the first place. Without the camp, no crowd and, therefore, no need to queue for a wave. Either that or a boatload of people turn up, at which point, I usually get out of the lineup.
Luke Dickson
Luke Dickson - 7 years ago
Maybe if you grew up in Australia you'd have a different view RE: the Soul Surfer thing, man. I get that people don't like to be preached to, but people also don't like having aggression thrown at them out in the water by people that haven't matured past adolescence.
nomoreluke
nomoreluke - 7 years ago
+Luke Dickson
Surfing isn't, and never has been, all about "Soul", even in the 70s as you suggest. Just ask Miki Dora. Localism and "surf rage" was massively prevalent, especially on the west coast of the US - probably even more so than it is today. Fact is, people get what they want out of surfing - some people want the whole hippy thing and that's cool. Others want to surf more aggressively and that's fine too. Others just don't appreciate being preached to, especially by people whose only contribution to the surfing world is the exploitation of remote and once pretty inaccessible spots for their own financial gain.
Luke Dickson
Luke Dickson - 7 years ago
Inane? Fair enough, but with surf rage going through the roof at city beaches around the world bringing about the loss of the Soul Surfing vibe of the 70's, I feel it appropriate to highlight unnecessary anger wherever I see it. I'm not suggesting that he shouldn't reply - I'm simply suggesting that it might be a bit better for him to keep a professional tone, rather than an insulting one. He's representing a business (a shitty, exploiting one I'll admit) but it's a business all the same. Just highlighted the fundamental lack of professionalism with many of these surf camps.

fella, I think you need to keep quiet, since your glaring lack of knowledge is a bit embarrassing. I DO stay away from learning locations generally but the Mentawais are not a learning location. I've surfed the Mentawais and Oahu several times and I'd rather get injured at Pipe than on some reef pass in the middle of nowhere. Now shhhhhhhhhhhhhh

He's definitely not the first to call you unprofessional fella - read back. My main issue with this whole video is the title... "Saving surfers from themselves". It's so arrogant and puritanical as to be utterly ridiculous, especially coming from a surf camp. Given many surfers' feelings about surf camps and how they are affecting surfing around the world, I think it's incredibly ironic (although obviously unintentionally so) to be spouting crap about "Saving surfers from themselves".
wavepark
wavepark - 7 years ago
Hi Tyler. You're definitely the first...avatar... to accuse me of being
unprofessional. But I appreciate that you're also a human being, so you're also the first human being to accuse me of being unprofessional. OUCH!
At this particular point I'm the founder, CEO and Managing Director of WavePark Resort, so I'll have to fire myself if I need to. Thanks for taking the time to write in and give me your two cents on it all, I really do appreciate it.
We're lucky enough to have developed great clientele over the years, of surfers who appreciate what I do for them in and out of the water. I'll keep doing what it is that I do, and hope that it keeps working out as well as it has. My intuition tells me that there is nothing professional about continually turning the other cheek when a human being slags your business, publicly or privately.
I think the majority of my current and ex-clientele would cheer if they ever happen upon my fat mouth defense of my business and my industry, and those are the kind of people I want coming to my resort. If you don't like my attitude, you're welcome to vote with your $. Maybe I'll see you in the water someday anyhow. Introduce yourself, I'll do my best to call you into the wave of the day.

Now let's put reality into context. Mr. Nomoreluke is simply some guy watching surfing videos that happened to stumble across a video submitted by your company on which he commented for his own amusement and the empty recognition of others. What he said is absolutely irrelevant considering that his name represents nothing more than an anonymous entity. You, on the other hand, represent the WavePark name, ideas, opinions, and reputation in everything you post from their media page(s). If you have an issue with what he, or anyone for that matter, has to say, by all means express your opinion through YOUR PERSONAL youtube account. Unless you are the owner of WavePark and have no shareholders, I'm sure not everyone on the board or the owner himself would approve of you slandering of some random viewer (who may be a 9 year old kid for all we know) in a public forum. I'm just saying when you're speaking on behalf of a business, there is definitely a right and wrong way to go about it. If you were my employee, I would absolutely see this as grounds for termination, not because your words were worse in perspective to what is essentially no one, but because your words were spoken on behalf of the company and were in bad taste. Just be professional. It's not difficult ya little cocksucker. (See I can do that because I'm representing absolutely no one). Have a good one mate, don't let your emotions get the best of you. Just ignore the hate and push on with what you believe is right...even if that means waiting in a line in the ocean.

@Tyler Durden. Put nomoreluke's "abrasiveness" in context. What he
said:
- Bunch of scum
- the biggest assholes in the history of surfing
- fucking hate these parasites
- walking embodiment of everything that's wrong with surfing
- Utter scum
- their bullshit camps
- sanctamonious asshole
- pure cancer
- camps burnt to the fucking ground
- Wanker
------------------------------
What I said:
- fat mouth

The only reason I leave the commentary open is because it provides a
great example of exactly why I made this video. I've come up with a
saying for it: "INVINCIBLE IGNORANCE".

It's taken me 19 years of surfing over Mentawai reefs to learn the +/-
10 things that I suggest on this video. I call it an "evidence-based
approach". I have more helping to do, and I'm going to continue doing
it despite small-minded, ignorant trolls. It's a free world, say what
you want. But you backing up this guy and his comments is putting you
on the wrong side of history. This video will stay up as long as the
internet exists, so expect another 100 million views, including all our
back and forths. Here's something else: I'm not afraid of losing my
livelihood when I defend safety and politeness, fat mouth notwithstanding.
Jeremy Merriweather
Jeremy Merriweather - 7 years ago
This situation was handled well until you let your ego completely undermine your point with your "fat mouth" insult. That's simply unacceptable for someone speaking on behalf of a business. I'm glad this disgruntled chap went on to make increasingly valid arguments in the comments following your little remark. His approach was a bit abrasive, but he's not wrong. If your petty attitude both in the video and in this comment thread depict what the overall attitude is like at your resort, I don't see anyone worth their wake in surfing enjoying themselves at wavepark. Hopefully the resort finds better management and maybe a PR rep to run their social media.. With over a million views it's not like that behavior has gone completely unseen.
nomoreluke
nomoreluke - 7 years ago
And, while we're being "clear", which aspects of your suggested etiquette do I agree with? I think I disagreed with most of them, aside from not dropping in, which isn't really YOUR etiquette, is it? That's just a worldwide standard. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not a dick in the water - if someone takes off deeper than me, I'm never going to drop in on them and when someone DOES drop in on me, I don't threaten them, fling my board at them or do anything that would endanger them. The very most I'll do is paddle up and ask them to be more aware next time. What I'm not going to do though is wait patiently in a queue. As I said - you want the wave? Take off deeper than me. The only time that is EVER a problem is in crazily crowded lineups, with everyone concentrated in the same area but guess what? Having any kind of crowd in the waves outside your camp is noone's fault but yours. Wouldn't be a crowd if your "resort" wasn't there. So, going back to your comment about you not "privatising" the wave, I assume then that you don't have an agreement with the authorities that you are the only surf camp allowed in the area? If you DO have an agreement like that (I would be massively surprised if you didn't), then you ARE effectively privatising the wave, aren't you?
nomoreluke
nomoreluke - 7 years ago
+wavepark
"My fat mouth". Charming!! Hahaha. I would expect a bit more professionalism in the face of criticism if you had any level of legitimacy at all. If you are so upset by negative comments, might I suggest turning off the ability to comment on here? There are plenty of people who disagree with the policies of "Surf Camps", which you suddenly claim not to be. You say yourselves on your website that you have built your resort on a "Secret Spot" - you're literally trading on this premise, despite the obvious irony that it can hardly be a "secret" anymore, since you're advertising it.
wavepark
wavepark - 7 years ago
@nomoreluke, you've been commenting up a storm on this video! I've published all your comments and replies, you sound pretty intelligent aside from your sweeping generalizations, your prejudice towards anybody who is not just like you, and the arrogance of course. Great to see that you're passionate about something, and interesting that you're so conflicted about the video. You support some of our suggested etiquette while wholeheartedly bashing the entire concept of providing a service which helps inexperienced surfers tackle waves of consequence.

Let's just be clear about one thing. We charge our guests money to A) transport them across 100nm of open ocean, delivering them safely to our resort in 3 hours. B) feed them 3 great meals a day, and stock a full bar C) provide them with safe and fast transport with a knowledgeable CPR and First Aid trained guide for all their ocean-going activities D) accommodate them in beachside bungalows on a private island E) give them as much electricity as they need, 24/7, from our own infrastructure F) provide a safety net for medivac because there is none provided by the local government G) provide an employee to guest ration of 2 employees for every 1 guest H) have a full time photographer, videographer and drone operator to document the best memories of their trip.

We don't charge people to surf, that is just an activity that we have in abundance around our resort. We've never claimed to have exclusivity over any waves, and we've never stopped anybody from surfing the wave in front of our resort. Privatization of waves maybe happening somewhere, but not here.

Please take the time to read 1 or 2 of the 60 reviews of our resort on Tripadvisor. Call it homework before you open your fat mouth again.

I live in florida and we surfers here get pretty hungry when its been flat for up to 2-3 weeks, yet as desperate as we are, the closest to the peak-priority rule still seems to work. It's also because most breaks i surf are scattered beach peaks, but there is one really odd rock break called RC's in central florida. The spot has 3-4 peaks with perfect lefts and shouldering close out rights. Everybody tries to get that perfect left hander, and there is the occasional drop in, but that is only because people don't understand the priority rule. But no body yells at anyone else, no fights break out, you may get the occasional angry hoot and holler but thats it. I'm not saying your technique does not work, because it seems like it does, but people come to my break to surf good waves and to perform their fullest on each wave. This isn't a wave where u let somebody shoulder hop because they have been waiting the longest, it is whoever is lucky enough to get the opportunity and is working the hardest, gets their waves. You can watch guys get 8 set waves in an hour and sure you will be annoyed, but they gambled the same amount as you did and they happened to be in the deepest zone. PLUS if somebody is sectioned out or falls on the drop, there is definitely going to be other guys trying to get the scraps of the wave. Also this is a wave where you and your buddies can happily share a ride when it gets to the chest high+ mark. I happened to share one of the most memorable waves ever with one of my good friends there. In the end of the day, it doesn't matter how your lineup is dictated, as long as it works and people enjoy themselves is all that matters. And if you have been in the water for an hour and have not had the chance to get into a wave, you are probably not at the right spot. Don't let angry keyboard warriors tell you what is right and wrong, as long as it works and people walk out with smiles, because I know I sure do! Thanks for the informational video!

I surf up in that area.. paradise, hangers, the streets ... im still new (surfing consistently for almost 2 years) so not that great but i know to stay out of the way ... but sometimes when im doing that the more advanced surfers will actually call me out and tell me they dont mind sharing a wave. Sharing is caring they say. all places are different but melbourne and cocoa have some of the nicest people. we are all out there for the same thing. to have fun... we all share and love for the ocean and the feeling of surfing no matter how new you are or how long youve been surfing... as for the dick heads maybe they need to remember how it was when they started. you dont just grab a surfboard and become immediately amazing on it. why not help eachother out a little more.

Thanks for the support @Cameron David. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion and most trolls are entertaining if nothing else. It is different everywhere, that's why we made this video just for Mentawai. Although by the comments of a lot of viewers, they would like this etiquette to exist elsewhere, but it's not really feasible in many places. Thanks for chiming in, and best of luck getting those smoking lefts off the peak at RC's.

wavepark - 8 years ago
It is more crowded here these days, as is everywhere.  The only thing I can say is that every single trip since I've lived here (18 years x 25 trips / year) has seen our guests go home surfed out.  That is what counts as far as I'm concerned.
Kevin 2345
Kevin 2345 - 8 years ago
+wavepark got it.  how is the crowd vibe out there?  I've been wanting to go to the Mentawais so badly
wavepark
wavepark - 8 years ago
+Kevin 2345 yes, that is how it works here. There's no need for people to talk about who is next. The point is to stay aware of your fellow surfers, and give them the space and respect until it is your turn, and they will do the same for you. So after you've had a wave, you paddle back and make a note of everybody that has been waiting since you caught your wave. Obviously there are times when too many people are coming and going into the lineup, and it becomes difficult to keep track. But it is pretty obvious when somebody has had a wave, or have just arrived in the lineup, and they paddle right past everybody and expect to get the next wave. They'll get called out pretty quick for doing that.
thejattlord
thejattlord - 8 years ago
If you live in a crowded place, learn to share the same wave with multiple people. If you really are a pro and want all the waves to yourself, fuck off to a surf resort and pay for it. Otherwise, learn to ride with others just as you would a train. No such thing as going "oh I got to the platform first, therefore I'm having this carriage to myself, you can wait for the next train". Time is limited son. Esp in today's day and age. That's why everyone's in a rush to catch waves in their 30-60min break.
wavepark
wavepark - 8 years ago
+thejattlord I'm not sure what you're on about?  As far as I can see, these are standards enforced by any surf tour operator in the Mentawai Islands.  Ask any guide out here if they would prefer to take care of respectful, polite surfers or assholes who think that you do whatever, wherever and whenever you like.
thejattlord

wavepark
wavepark - 8 years ago
+thejattlord thanks for the input. Please keep in mind our waves are breaking hard over shallow coral. These are not your typical beach break weekend warrior waves. Additionally, we live 3 hours by speedboat ride (weather permitting) from a 3rd. world hospital. Add to that a $25,000 minimum bill for a medivac to the nearest 1st world hospital, and you can start to see why we like to encourage people to NOT share waves with each other.

I am over 70 and still surf whenever I can. Indian Ocean, Caribbean, Canary Islands, Basque country. The rules here are fundamental and I learnt them many moons ago. If you are capable of surfing in the Mentawis you should know them as a matter of reflex - if you don't you shouldn't be surfing there or anywhere else that needs a level of experience and expertise. The problem lies in the fact that there are way too many people trying to surf in conditions way way beyond their level everywhere in the world. Learning to surf , what anyone tells you, takes years of hard grind and you really do not want to be going to the Mentawis unless you can. Surf guides -God help us!

wavepark
wavepark - 8 years ago
+legh davies , you're an inspiration to all of us, and I hope you can continue to surf until the end of your days. Everything you mentioned is a great reason to have a surf guide. Should you paddle for this one, or wait for the next one? Am I sitting in the right spot, or should I be 20ft. over that way? Should I take the first wave of the set, or wait for the third? Will the dropping tide make it better or worse? Should I conserve my energy and wait for the afternoon session? All of these questions we get asked hundreds of times a week by our guests who are keen to stay safe and get the best "bang for their buck", so to speak. Stay wet!

wavepark
wavepark - 8 years ago
+Chris Young there aren't a lot of waves out here that are peaks, most are either left or right. For the few waves that do peak, the most important thing is communication between the surfers. The surfer who has been waiting the longest gets to make the call which wave they are taking, and which way they are going. It all works out one way or another.

personally I find if you growl at other surfers in the line-up you show you're the alpha surfer and by right can take all the waves you want until someone growls more ferociously at you and you become the bitch. Another method called the "out kook" method is where you bring a bus full of kooks and unleash them on the line up, wait 20 mins until the surfers already there snap and leave or get charged for assault then round up your kooks and go enjoy a peaceful session by yourself. Happy surfing folks

I have been surfing a couple years now and seems like the biggest downer about surfing...is other surfers. This is why I LOVE surfing cold water in the Northwest. I am usually the only one out there and never have to deal with all this nonsense you guys area talking about. I don't think I would want to surf anywhere where there are a lot of surfers. Most surfers sound really selfish know it alls and get butthurt super easily. Shame.

Kizmit I'm a geezer and surfed on and off 50 years on the west coast. the best (and biggest) wave I ever caught was South of the breakwater breakwaterat Westport. This day was better than Santa Cruz, Oregon breaks, Los Angeles breaks and other Wa. breaks. This was '95 so got to rub it in to my Cal. friends with email; "yeah it was terrible, overhead and off shore...sheesh 7-10 waves sets and 5 surfers, man almost had to move over 50ft. to have a wave by myself!" Of course I got lots of "I can't hear you!" "Go to heck" and other words naughty words.

I can admit to myself that i will ever be able to surf like slater. But i dont think 90% of short boarders realise this. Everyone is so serious in the water these days. Have fun for fucks sake, share waves. Surf mals, fishes, guns, whatever. to suit conditions. But if you paddle out on a 5"9 on a 1.5 foot day with 50 people in the water. i personally think youd have more fun on a mal. good luck with that round house cut back..hope your nipples tingle when you think someone saw it. Once again you go back to missing the point.  You should be ashamed pretending you own the ocean and the waves.  Here's a clue:  If we  ever cross paths in the ocean, you can be sure I  won't be taking my marching orders from you. And I would imagine a million other surfers feel the same.  Good luck with your so-called private surf retreat, fascist.

Randsurfer - 8 years ago
+wavepark Yeah, good luck with that. You don't own the Mentawais and you don't make the rules. That's exactly the point of my original post. We've come full circle, but thanks for admitting it.
wavepark
wavepark - 8 years ago
+Randsurfer Yes, that's how we've set it up. You can be the most mediocre surfer in the world, but when you come to Mentawai, regardless of whether you stay on a charter boat or resort, you'll have the same chance to catch a great wave as any pro who comes along. Ride a SUP? Fine. Slide on your belly? Great. No prejudice, we're all here to do the same thing. We live in an area where there are no rules, so we make up our own that seem to work fine.
I like to call it "Disneyland for surfers". Wait your turn and get called into the best wave of your life. Nobody else paddles for your wave to snowball you, nobody else drops in and stuffs you up on the reef. It takes the pressure off and allows average surfers to get above average waves with support from everybody in the lineup.
Randsurfer
Randsurfer - 8 years ago
Who are you to go to a foreign country and set up a business and start laying down rules for other visitors?  Your rules are just to protect your business interests.  So more mediocre surfers will pay you thousands of dollars.  You really think some dork sitting on the shoulder has priority and everyone should let a wave go through just on the chance that he might catch it just because it's "his turn"?

It's sad that even for remote locations like the Mentawis, you have to post a video just to reinforce common sense and etiquette. Though, honestly I never thought about paddling into the close-out,whitewater section of a wave as opposed to the shoulder. He sounds flat because he's been out surfing all day and how else would one want to sound? Really it just comes down to not being a douche and being aware that we all make mistakes and feel like a kook sometimes. It should be the waves giving the lessons and not the other way around, but some people need a guide for sure. One last thing, I remember quite a few years back I was surfing without a leash in some thigh high surf. There were maybe five people out and it was in no danger of hitting anyone. Some dick head was paddling out and was like, "Hey bro, that's super dangerous you shouldn't do that unless you are an expert like I am." I was surprised, but I let it slide. Before I left, I watched him drop in on someone and his board go off spinning towards the beach. I didn't need to say anything, I just laughed and shook my head.
wavepark
wavepark - 8 years ago
+John Maltman it should all be common sense, I agree. There's a lot of surfers out there though who are making their first trip overseas, their first surf trip away from their home breaks, and often times their first trip to coral reef waves! The only reason we made the video is because we were seeing people do dangerous things to themselves and others that could easily be avoided. We're getting paid to make sure that people are kept safe and catching the waves of their lives, so it made sense to assume that nobody knows anything, and start from scratch. Thanks for your comments and support!

It's ok having tips like these but the general rule of thumb is to have some common sence & not put others into harms way....if you're risking scraping your knuckes duck-diving then your're also risking fucking you're board up so thats a no-brainer, Dont duck-dive....time it right to skip over if it's shallow. But Basically....don't be a dick & show some respect, treat others how you would like to be treated. And have fun! :D

Most Beginners have no common sense, and need to be told all these little rules like golf, bowling, etc, its etiquette and common sense, NO drop in!, Yes Paddle around (its easier), don't dip to deep, knuckles really!  All your new friends talked about it on your boat all the way to the break then everyone jumps in and all this sharing crap your bestis friends talked about, goes out the window, everyone for themselves, and the oldest member gets grumbley, Hey if you're in the SPOT you go period...the waves don't play by the rules. You try to take turns but if thier are only 3 waves a set, the first guys on are going to be back on it again the next 3, same guys, those are the snakes, and chumps and not your friends, everyone pays, and if your not one of the 3 you feel cheated.  answer: You paddle stronger and deeper and its yours!!! and HOOT...don't be a KOOK!

Hi +Gary Castle, everybody brings their hometown culture to these islands, and being a kook is all relative. We're all out here trying to get barreled, right?
Paul Smith
Paul Smith - 8 years ago
Thank you for this video. I wish I had seen such a thing when I first started surfing many years ago. I’m the long boarder who catches the wave outside and rides it into where the short boarders are lined up. But I don’t catch “every wave” because I consider that there are other surfers. That is the bottom line… There are others. Anyone who doesn't like rules will never get along with others because no one… NO ONE likes someone who thinks only of themselves. These are good rules! Obviously they are with the intent to share. However, the best “rule” was not mentioned. It is the “Golden Rule”. Matt. 7:12. It always applies! It applies even when other rules don’t cover the situation. If others would just follow that "rule".... surfing in crowds could be much more enjoyable.

These are the rules in every single surf spot, unless you're just out with your friends and no one else. However lineup position really depends on the waves most times. Just because its not your turn doesn't mean you have to let go of a wave which no one else but you could have taken.  Take it. And yes pro surfers take waves all the time even when it is clearly not theirs.

Hi +iLiveOnFijiTime , most pros when they come over here are really cool, maybe just because they are on holiday, but they are always giving waves away and have a big smile on their face. Sometimes there is the odd "semi-pro" who has something to prove with photographers in the water, but karma has a way of coming around real quick out here, and most people pull their heads in.

this video is fkn shit.  you only need two rules ; don't drop in and don't snake..  the waves over there arnt crowded so why all the rules.. i don't care how long you have been surfing for man your rules are stupid.. people surf and go on surf trips to escape the real world and get away for a few hours or a few days.. the last thing i would want after paying thousands of dollars  to go surf these waves is someone telling me from the shoulder "don't do this", " don't do that".. your defeating the purpose of surfing and wrecking the culture..

That makes no sense, the early stages of surfing their was no where near as many people in the water they sure we're getting barrelled or going as fast as we do now a days. So with that said it is essential that their is some type of guidelines and rules so no one gets hurt. If you are going to pay thousands of dollars for a surf trip don't go somewhere where it's crowded and theirs a bunch of rules simple as that. And talking about surf culture a big part of it was in the Hawaii islands and how they went about things respecting each other. They didn't need as many rules because they all respected each other and wouldn't do dumb shit like some kooks these guys are. Get the fuck out of here.

As a former long boarder turned short, I couldn't agree more. I can't stand the long boarders who force you to drop on them because they take every wave with no consideration for short boarders. Just because long boarders have a different tool that allows them to take the wave earlier doesn't give them the right to dominate the Ocean because others follow "etiquette."

It performs better than my smaller boards. You'll have a good balance of looseness and control. It has more volume, flotation, and paddling capability. Try it, you'll get more waves for sure.

All good advice...worked well before surfing became a sort of pre-school mentality  indulgent agro junkies, bullies and morons.....which some of the comments indicate....the sort of behaviour one might expect from some life-savers. Impounding your board meant boards for them to use on the weekend....and you got back a ding crate sometimes simply because your board drifted into the flagged area before you could recover it. (no leg ropes then).

When the sets are slow...guys who drop in generally paddle back to where they were before and drop in again. I remember moving more and more close to a reef to get a wave so maybe the bastard would give me a break....when he did by that time as I cranked a right suddenly it was all rock.....end of board and nearly end of me. Locals think this is amusing....trashing people who are not. One of our truly beautiful surfers Nat Young was renowned for it but he finally ended up in hospital about age 45....bashed by an angry surfer.

Many other top surfers thought they had the divine right but weren't so keen when they cold see you coming for them on the beach....all of a sudden it was 'sorry mate' after dropping in on you all day. The advice given here is what gentlemen surfers used to do, so let's hope it strikes a chord.

wavepark And so kids who are learning to surf, while paddling out should be able to outmaneuver a surfer barreling down the line so they can "get out of the way?" You tell me who is more maneuverable, a surfer standing with some speed, or someone on their belly. People need to accept that sometimes shit just happens, and quit being such little bitches about it. Fuck man, surfing is supposed to be fun, but it has gotten to be a bunch of dickheads. All this "my wave anger" is why I quit board surfing to concentrate on surf kayaking. (Also I kind of suck at surfing now.) I can simply paddle to a few remote spots north of Santa Cruz and surf  waves in complete isolation.  I can see your rules working with 10 to 15 people out and plenty of waves coming in, but how could it possibly work in a place like Steamer Lane where you can see 100 plus surfers, of all abilities, fighting for the waves.  Sometimes and in some places the assholes win!

Depends on the country. France and basque country gave the finger to respecting fellow surfers, they are the biggest assholes in the world and will constantly fuck up your line regardless of how long you've been waiting or where you catch the wave.

When surfing most beaches in the basque region i just whistle/yell if i'm already on the wave and someone tries to catch it. After that you just pray he has a little bit of dignity.

I enjoy surfing and the ocean too much to care about being so impatient. I stay out of the way, surf on my own and dont even take the chance of dealing with all of the b.s. "locals have the say" is the stupidest thing happening to surfing...it is similar to racism and i'm glad thhere are still places where people share smiles, hoots and respect to their neighbour in the lineup. I always went to locals presenting myself, asking stories about the place and rarely got hassled... Localism is a plague

Saying someone can't surf a spot because they're not from there is one thing. That's localism in the most pejorative sense. But a stranger or beginner paddling out and immediately sitting at the top of the peak needs to be checked. And that's done by the folks who surf that break regularly.

The problem with surf culture now adays is NOT that there are more kooks. (And there are more kooks. Surfing now resembles tennis more than what it used to be.) The problem is that the kooks don't know they're kooks. At most spots the social hierarchy has been washed out by throngs of weekend warriors. They surf waves they shouldn't be surfing. They blow more waves than they make. They dominate priority with the size of their boards. They're only looking down the line when paddling for waves. They drop in on others. The get in the way of competent surfers. And they're dangerous. Still, they don't recognize their relative lack of ability and don't adjust where they surf and how they approach the lineup. They have their own set of rules and make surfing less fun and more dangerous for others all with a smile on their face. And there's no video or Mentawai guide saying, "This is how it works here."

So then what? Should the surfers who have devoted their lives to a spot and know the social norms established after decades of surfing just shut their mouths because someone's going to get their feelings hurt?

You call jerks wanting to kick someone's ass "locialism." But you're just seeing what you want to see. Localism is a lot more than that.

PipeLineGt, the reason that you get to make the rules at your house is that you pay for it and maintain it. Most locals don't do community service, they just live there. They pay taxes, sure, but so do the locals and lots are federal. Also, even within the bounds of your argument is a little thing called hospitality.

of course you know me, you are me and i am you. like the wave, it cease to exist without the wind or water. we are one and we are all. we are one and the same.

i feel you mate, anger is a natural emotion, i too get frustrated dealing with blatant ignorance. but if you control your emotions instead of letting them control you, then, you become the master! be mindful of your mind, be thoughtful of your thoughts and let your actions be according.

respect is everything but let them learn through peace, its better than to learn through violence. resist anger towards your brothers and sisters out on the wave, they need your wisdom and teachings. when ignorance is removed by understanding then they will act accordingly, however if they persist to be jerks, then theres nothing you can do, it is a problem within themselves that they must fix on their own. in this case there is no need to be upset, just wish them well and eventual peace. namaste brotha, be one with the ocean kris san!

Hey, there is a tendency on impersonal communications such as this for people to be disrespectful of each other. I always follow the practice of trying to be as polite in writing as I would be to your face, so when someone calls me an idiot, or stupid, I respond back in kind, but I certainly would not have been ignorant if you hadn't started it. I always felt it was cowardly to cut loose on someone just because you can - basic principles that a reasonable person should follow in order to participate in a decent society.
parrrtypants
parrrtypants - 9 years ago
really? thats your response? that's all? i am not trying to impress anyone with my ability to  type. sometimes i get passionate about something, and just start typing. if i were an anal, ocd suffering english teacher, i might be stressed out on spellcheck. but, alas, i am none of these things.
dont be mad because someone made you realize how silly your comment was. we are all just people. we all have opinons. we are free to express these opinions. letting someone elses jokes about opinions bother you is not beneficial to a happy existance. instead, try joking back. this is a much healthier way to live your life. haha.

toreropalido and Joseph.  What I mean is as you are going down on your duck dive to hold the board very tight to your chest (bear hug).  What happens sometimes is the wave is more powerful than the surfer is expecting, and turbulence under water can make the board hit the surfers head.  The less space between the board and the surfer underwater, the less distance the board has to move and cause injury.
Joseph Bellamy

A lot of things can be said about the act of surfing. At the end of the day it remains a thinking man’s activity; it is not for the ignorant. Nothing can trump the importance of being informed, educated and respectful in the water. You can have all the skill in the world, but without respect and knowledge drowning becomes a part of your reality. If you don’t end up drowning then you survive to be known by others (unbeknownst to yourself) as an asshole. If no one teaches you the rules, you end up staying an assbag for the rest of your life. So, if you don’t realize (whilst calling others kooks) that the inside rule accounts for mechanical Points and Reefs whilst the Turn system applies for shifting beach breaks then you are a kook. Don’t prove to everyone that you are an ignorant turd, thus kook.
Bigbore400cc
Bigbore400cc - 10 years ago
my pet hate - on beach breaks back home where the peaks are all over the place, not much order in the water, when you catch the wave from 5-10 metres further out the back than the other guy, and you're standing up first, and this guy on the  inside paddles, stands up and tries to claim it's his wave. Bull shit.  If you catch the wave and stand up first before they even paddle for the wave, it's yours. Just cos they're on the  inside doesn't mean it's theirs. I call it dropping in from the inside.
And what about when everyone's waiting for a set, a small  wave comes along that nobody wants, just because you start paddling for it and show some interest in it, the fuckwit sitting right on your arse starts paddling too. If you hadn't have paddled for it neither would he.

Kook: is someone who can't see that it is whoever has been waiting longest, has the next wave.
Kook: is someone who paddles deep (straight past competent surfer) and is to deep to make wave blowing it for both kook and surfer.
Give me room, please! When it is my turn, i don't care where you are, it is my turn.
This vid is ok because so many people still don't get it.

I agree, but unfortunately a lot of surfers are greedy pricks who want to get every wave. These days if the surf is half decent most places are crowded, and if you don't share a bit - and give learners a bit of a break - then it's a pretty nasty vibe out there.  Surfing should be mainly about relaxing and enjoying the waves, but a lot of guys surf like they are trying to win the "Triple Crown" each time.  I try to give those kind of guys some gentle advice, and if that doesn't work then I sit next to them and make sure they don't get another wave. It's pretty hard to catch a wave if someones dragging on your leg rope...............hahhahahah

um, you know americans arent the only ones doing it right? there just happens to be more surfers per capita in america, australia, and brasil, than most places in the world. so these three are out mobbing. just like anyone else. its senseless, to get so agro about it. its going to happen sooner or later, and complaining about it, and talking like a brainless child, isnt going to do anything. if you arent going to organize some kind of coalition, that has the focus of raising funds to help prevent this, and make most of these places habitat reserves, or whatever. if you arent doing something to change it, quit getting so agro at people about it. people who arent even directly involved with your misconseption of what is really happening in the world.

Jalen DeBonis i said that, because Rompa Stompa was saying americans want to dictate the rules of the surf world. and Rompa Stompa, you shouldnt just go spouting off about things you clearly know nothing about. you said the guy on the inside goes when a set comes in. which is as far from the opposite of reality as you can get. you obviously have a lot of hate in you, and a propensity for disrespect. i would feel sorry for a guy like you paddling out, ANYWHERE. because, with that attitude, (and it really doesnt matter where on the planet) if you paddled out, you would be sent in, or get your ass severly kicked. seriously. what, you surf for a year or two,and you are the authority now? haha. kook.

Well, as I am still pretty green with surfing and etiquette, I try to avoid the line up as much as I can. But what do you say to someone who paddles out past you, so your constantly moving to avoid being "under" him and gives you shit for "for being in the way" when he drops 40' + away? Happened twice, uhggg.. I try and respect distance as much as i can, partially why i dont surf the line up.. Any feedback?

Sadly, there are more surfers than there are people with common sense and "rules" need to be implemented. Such strict rules takes some of the fun out of surfing. That being said, I am a "regulator" in the water and I make sure anyone endangering other people after being warned once will no longer be having a good time.

i havnt surfed in years. but did my best to pay my dues long ago at some spots. I like the rules as they create etiquette. I think some complainers need to grow up and stick to scratching for waves in their own crowds. btw I hate snowballs. I get they happen but imagine not having to deal with some guy jackin up the face on you. potentially making that possibly the wave of the day. it kills what could be otherwise epic ongoing session. frankly getting stuffed is waste of wave. fffnn dechebags

I grew up on the North Shore and its a unwritten rule don't paddle for the shoulder when someones coming down the line and just take it if your sitting on the inside. Now I live in San Diego and no one does this and it gets under my skin. Also the snowballing issue ugh... don't even get me started. Great tutorial and I agree with it 100% especially the taking your turn and if you miss a wave don't go for the next one just because you're in better position you've lost your chance and gotta wait

There's no localism vibe from the speaker at all....if any of you have ever been to a place where waves break consistently in the same place/direction, then you would know that waiting your turn is the proper etiquette. Good thing have you blokes can't afford to make it out here...you can leave your hb trashy attitude at your 2ft slop beach break.

My mother was born here, yay, does it makes me a local? nahhh, I can't even afford to come here as everything is in $..most of the resorts, operators are owned by foreigners. Then I work my ass off overseas, and to surf of course, mehhh, i don't get much waves either. FFS, i don't even wanna go to where I grew up, Bali, no more..fuck it, i feel like I'm the alien there. I EVEN HAVE TO PAY ENTRANCE FEE to go into clubs to have BINTANG. Anyway, enjoy the waves, have fun, just respect our ocean!

And there are those of us that have a Lust for life greater than the Fear of death or worse. "You can't imagine what is feels like" - to let people live and die on their own terms. Standard elitist surfer bullshit, acting like he is the only one that has ever ate a reef snack. Not a surprise. Simple, have some curtasy and Fuckin nut up and bomb that shit or paddle in. Folks like this want to bubble wrap the planet for "SAFTY" and rule the world until no one can enjoy themselves..

No surf etiquette in a lot of places .. I'm for smash and bash ..especially the "haole "Most locals from hawaii ,mexico, indo people know because of our beginnings. Dam haoles ! You need a surf instruction vid on how not to get beat up ,"whack". Haole be gone Works every time back home , .. But it's usually white folk that think it there right to go first ,take waves, and not wait ..sucks..

surf etiquette is suppose to be universal, but those who are freaking ouut & calling the messenger names are the very ones who need to grow up - no one cares if you can surf, you are not the center of the universe. play nice, it makes surfing safer, much more fun, and the soul surfing experience that makes surfing so beautiful. Maybe some of the viewers don't understand what this video is, then again maybe I don't: but here is my best guess. It is my belief that this video is an etiquette video for those who have come to stay at Wave Park resorts at the Mentawai Islands. i see wat stevodakine1 is talking about. i also get what you're talking about. to be frank, you're a bit over the top with what you're trying to point out to everyone. i saw this video...and forgot everything you mentioned. what i did get out of it was...respect the locals and be chill and wait till i get that opportunity but to lecture me on how to surf is almost comical. i've traveled a lot of places to surf and i doubt some 'kook' would travel all the way out there just to surf.

Private waves, surf snobbery! totally against everything surfing should be about. Any surfer who cannot just accept that you miss waves, forecasts are wrong, and anything that can happen does happen, those people shouldn't surf, maybe they should take up a consistant sport like swingball. waves and the ocean are inconsistent and the idea of a private beach where you have such a structure to surfing or hog the waves is like rich boy localism!

Private surf resorts are usually in very inaccessible and/or protected areas. One of the main reasons they exist is to LIMIT development. Money has very little to do with it. Crowds stay low and stricter rules on in-water behaviour mean that it's safer - most of these places are a LONG way from a hospital. If you want to see what surf tourism does to a place, go and have a look at Kuta

Dude, I couldn't give a shit about the "spirit of surfing" - I'm not some hippy moron who doesn't realise it's not the 70s anymore. When I go surfing, I want to rip the fuck out of every wave I catch, not soul arch my way into the channel. Private surf resorts have been around for YEARS - the pros are surfing at one right now!! Try surfing any of the waves around Tavarua if you're not paying to stay on the island and see what happens. Same as G-Land.

My local beaches in Washington and Oregon are pretty much a free for all, especially with the in flux of Kiters and SUP's, not that I have a problem with that, it's just that so many newbies don't know or observe the protocol. When I arrive in Maui I very much appreciate that the folks there are observant of the rules... It makes everything more civilized, and enhances everyone's experience. It's called the aloha spirit... All I was commenting on was the fact that all you seem to do is troll video posts telling people to "learn to surf". Nope, not local. Never claimed that I was. I would imagine the locals are pretty stoked to have jobs where there would otherwise be none, and the government happy to earn taxes from my company for their coffers? Johnny Twothumb

I thought surfers were meant to be chilled out and cool? They somehow turn into selfish, rude pricks when in the water. Always amazes me how there could be a hundred people bobbing around and not one person will say a word to another. I just started surfing and its awesome when me and a friend catch the same wave. We laugh and have fun, not bitch and moan how we got cut off. Or how someone didnt obey the "rules and protocol"

You don't paddle for someone else's wave because you make the lip crumble - not too much of a problem in a beachie but if you're trying to make a section in the barrel, it fucks you up. It's also considered interference in surfing competitions.
nomoreluke
nomoreluke - 10 years ago
Dude, he's not talking about some shitty beach break with medical care 2 minutes down the road. He's talking about surfing over reefs so shallow that your fins scrape on them sometimes as you paddle for a wave and so sharp that they are like razors. These rules don't apply to places with massive crowds and shifting peaks.
nomoreluke
nomoreluke - 10 years ago
Go back to Burswood fella. How do you know how he surfs?? Just cheacked your profile and previous comments and it seems that all you do on here is tell people to "learn to surf". You've gotta love an internet hardman - there's nothing scarier!! Hahahahaha.
nomoreluke
nomoreluke - 10 years ago
No, not at all mate. The only problem with some of the fin systems is that, when you sand them down, you take off the protective coating on them. Carbon fibre fins, for example, have a sort of laquer on them, meaning that sanding them down is a bit of a no no. As for noses, there used to be nose guards on the market but I haven't seen them for a while!

remain completely still and float over the lip with no sudden movements or do a late duck dive into the face backwards or sideways. but half the time it's unavoidable pushing the lip over or you'll get sucked over the falls. in the instance of a regular forming break like on a reef with a small take-off point you shouldn't be waiting around for scraps on the shoulder anyway.
1BigRocket
1BigRocket - 10 years ago
visitors to this video and to the Mentawais should keep in mind that these rules are appropriate in a remote place where the waves break with machine like precision and a relatively tame crowd. In theory it would be nice but these rules won't always translate to crowded beach breaks with shifty peaks scattered about more populated areas like South Beach, Miami or Sebastian Inlet. You can show etiquette to others and hope they abide equally but expect your wave count to be low.

If only everyone would follow these lineup rules! Surfing crowded breaks would be so much more enjoyable.

It might affect your surfing maneuvers, especially if you are Kelly Slater. More importantly, it will definitely reduce your injury chances.

I wish i could surf. It looks to hard. Eddie Vedder is a fanatic of this sport. He even wrote a song about it. Its called "Amongst The Waves". You surfers should check it out.

Hmmm. I like your zen attitude. To be in harmony with the wave, is all important for a beautiful experience. what ever the wave gives you. Minus any distractions. I don't know if zen was the the right word, but it was the first word that popped into my mind. You have thought it out well. Thank You MT. mr. quizical

Hi StayFrosty. I just mean to use a piece of sandpaper and take the edge off your fins and noses by removing the sharp edge with the sandpaper.

Typically Tommy, you are right. However, when the person who is deepest is also the greedy guy who just got the last 3 set waves, but there are 15 people in the water, then a change is necessary. That's why we say "wait your turn", so it doesn't matter how close you are to the curl. Then everybody has a fair chance to get the same great waves. We're all here for the same reason! Cheers!

Good video but one correction. It's not whose been waiting the longest it's actually whoever is closer to the start of the curl of the wave.
