That's quite a bit to digest, but essential. Long after I write this I'll still be absorbing this information... I can't thank you enough for the information you've shared.
Michael Towle
Michael Towle - 8 years ago
+Jon Emberson Jon, The size of the wave (as it breaks) is dependent upon the depth of the water. Those big pitching waves you see in Hawaii and elsewhere are long energy waves generated by strong winds over a fairly long period that go from deep water to a shallow shelf (usually a reef). Most beach break waves break on shallow sandbars. Sometimes there are two sand bars, one outside (maybe 6-7' deep) and one inside (3-4' deep). If there is a strong swell, usually generated by strong winds over a long period (called a ground swell, that may be 500 miles offshore), the waves have high energy and will break in deeper water (outside sandbar). Typically, we don't get that. Most beachbreaks of waist high or greater are generated by nearshore, strong winds with varying swell directions (from distant wind/swell influences). These can be messy and of indeterminate shape. What makes good beach break waves is an offshore wind that holds the wave face/peak before it breaks the wind energy with the wave energy. Then, we sometimes get pitching waves depending on the wave energy and the offshore wind energy. I know, it's a lot of physics, but that is what is so fascinating about surfing. In the middle of the ocean, wave energy does not move the water, the energy just moves onward until it is spent on some shore.

When I learned to surf, I quickly realized I did better in small conditions, while building up my stamina, balance and technique. The most important thing is to be a good swimmer. Don't rely on the leash, because it will break, and at the worst moment. Be patient, keep working, and know your limits. Surf long enough and your limits will extend beyond your expectations.
Jon Emberson
Jon Emberson - 8 years ago
+Michael Towle Thank you for the advice. How far out from the shore will the sizeable waves be?
Jon Emberson
Jon Emberson - 8 years ago

Michael Towle
Michael Towle - 8 years ago
Jon, the most important thing is to be a good swimmer and comfortable in the water. If you go out in "washing machine" conditions, the ocean can betray you. Know how to relax, breathe out your nose underwater with light pressure (as you are tumbling) and don't panic. You will get to the surface and can breathe. Now, if there is 18" of foam on top, again, don't panic. Spring off the bottom to get above the foam and get your breath. If you are still tethered to your board, pull it in and climb aboard, you are safe. If the leash broke and you are on your own, relax and know that your swimming skills will eventually get you home. Don't panic.

+utuberine man you are HARDCORE... I wanted to try longboard (for the nestalge)... but NOW, well geez!!! Looks like a short board session is around the corner (for myself)... It looks like you want to get a batters box stance on the board??? Yeah, and just to get on, in, around that warm gorgeous blue water....
utuberine
utuberine - 8 years ago
+Jon Emberson What is that? I like a solid fast board but small enough to submerge to escape the thrash zone. I  ride a 6 ft 8in often . Im over 6 foot tall. I like my 6 10 better because it stays in control and stable when Im driving a hard bottom turn, which is important. Nothing like gettin that killer set wave, out past everyone. The jury is over, the wave is yours. Everyones watching. Its all right there in front of your bulging eyeballs. A smooth green white flecked with blue and surrounded by a halo of every colour imagineable just begging to be driven across and smshed off that feathering  lip then stay high and in that power pocket to make that long fast section, but wait. Oh. shit. Your board stayed behind you on that bottom turn didnt it. Oh well. Next time. If there is one because nobody knows your ass here and after lettin you in, ya fucked it all up. So shit.

Jon Emberson
Jon Emberson - 8 years ago
+Joshua Spivey I will do this.
utuberine
utuberine - 8 years ago
+Jon Emberson Practise now. Learn to duckdive.  Learn to paddle and drive your whole body, board and all, completely down under the waters surface, deeper the better. When you hit the ocean you will have such a major advantage with this skill, you will eliminate a LOT of pain and time.
There is a deep fear associated with getting caught inside a mackin set, over shallow water, with a hard bottom.
If you are caught there , which will happen time and time again, it just will, and you cannot duckdive, you coul, tha,, there i...thats it for you man.
