November 8, 2017 - Nazaré, Portugal Professional Big Wave Surfer, Andrew Cotton (UK), suffered a horrific wipeout during a Big Wave Session in Praia do Norte in Portugal, and was taken to the Hospital, after hurting his back. This exclusive footage shows the wave and the moment Cotton is catapulted into the air, and the all aftermath until he is moved to the Ambulance. Cotton caught a monster wave, and successfully rode it till the end. When the wave closed out, Cotton jumped from his board and was then projected into the air several meters high by the huge white water explosion. After the huge wipeout and after being held down underwater for many seconds, Cotton was hit by another wave on the head before being rescued by his partner professional Big Wave Surfer, Hugo Vau. During the rescue operation, the jetski was flipped by another wave, and both Cotton and Vau had to swim to the beach. A Medical Team on site promptly attended Andrew Cotton soon as he got to the beach. At this moment cotty was with pain on his back, so they immobilised him as a precautionary measure. He was then taken by Ambulance a few minutes later to the Hospital. According to filmmaker Pedro Miranda who shot this video, "he broke his back but is stable and recovering good and has no further damage, except being away from the water for maybe 3 months. We all wish him the best and a fast recovery, this was by far the gnarliest wipeout of the Season, stoked that Cotty is recovering”, the filmer said. Also, Cotton posted a little update from his hospital bed later at night: “Thanks to everyone who helped this morning,” he said. “Everyone was really calm, you guys really saved my back, which unfortunately is broken but definitely could be worse, so thank you.” Andrew Cotton is Britain's most notorious Big Wave Surfer, one of Nazaré's first pioneers along with his team mate Garrett McNamara. Cotton has been consistently surfing giant waves in Nazaré since the beginning 6-7 years ago and was previously nominated for the WSL Big Wave Awards with a wave caught in Nazaré. * (Update 2018.04.05 - This video has been nominated for "Wipeout of the Year" in the 2017/18 WSL Big Wave Awards) * (Update 2018.04.28 - This video won the "Wipeout of the Year" Award in the 2017/18 WSL Big Wave Awards) _________________________ Copyright © 2017, Pedro Miranda, all rights reserved Filmed and Edited by: Pedro Miranda Featured Surfers: Andrew Cotton, Hugo Vau Location: Praia do Norte, Nazaré - Portugal __________________________ The footage in this video is protected by copyright. Did he suffer any cord injury?
Andrew is in the worst possible position. He is half way on the wave face and has only one option and that is jump off prior to the lip forming and pitching.
Andrew hesitates and then tries to outrun the deadly lip. His bad position pays off in terms of the inverse lottery and the full power of the lip lands on his body and smashes him.
He is lucky that he is alive and NOT A para or quadraplegic. I sincerely hope that he walks and surfs again.

Nazare - very extreme there. Never saw s.o. before.
Cotton appears to be either ambivalent or hesitant half way down the face and that led to his ultimate disaster.
Anyone caught in large surf will tell you that your options are extremely limited.
Waves this size can only happen when there is close to no continental shell to block their energy. Nazaré waves are definitely not smaller than jaws waves , but they vary more in shape speed and size. Its been less than 10 years since nazare is surfed , in this short period it already produced record waves , we haven't even seen how big it can get.
Look at this one , a wipe out on the biggest I have ever seen https://youtu.be/39pyQVQJxjs?t=53
Nazaré can get that big because there is a very deep channel(under water canyon) there that carves its way through the continental shell all the way to the beach. That is also why 15 seconds period with 3,5 meter wave height already produces waves that count for big wave surfers. The hard thing with nazare is that waves break all over the place , making it harder for jetski's to rescue. Jaws is much more a wave that breaks in a fixed spot with a more consistent quality. But in Nazare an other phenomena sometimes creates record waves
we all witnessed a human being suriving mother earth's great power!!! See what we are capable of - if you train, focus and give more then 100% in Things you do!! He wasn't lucky, he was prepared to surive this situation - all the best and speedy recovery! GOAT
Talk is cheap , of course , but to me he looks like a kook being towed by a jet ski...
A) Cotty was nominated for 2014 Ride of the Year Entry - Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards
B) Cotty towed in Garrett McNamara in 2013 to "The biggest wave ever surfed"
C) Calling him a Kook is beyond pathetic.
Just because someone isn't headlining magazines doesn't mean they aren't well known, any big wave surfer will know Andrew Cotton and more importantly consider him a peer, you meanwhile just clearly a hater and as such are blocked so i don't come across your drivel again
Any one whose into the sport knows that . Having the guts to get out at Nazare behind a jet ski doesn't make you a big wave surfer in any way , you have to prove that over the years , and up until now the only footage that include mr Cotton surfing big waves is that of him being towed at Praia do Norte .
One of the principle of surfing , whether you surf 6 foot beach breaks , or giant waves like that is to get away from the lip in a wipe out , keyboard warrior or not...
Each year these guys push themselves to get deeper, he simply misjudged it and when you fuck up even a small % you get wasted by waves like this. Meaning real COOKS like yourself who live behind keyboard talking shit without any facts or knowledge will end up doing nothing in life other than criticizing others, good luck with that career bro
