They have bombed trees w/o even replacing or paying for them. This film was actually filmed in the Philippines not in Vietnam. But all thanks to this movie, it gave birth to surfing in my country. Actors left their surboards and the locals started to teach theirselves to surf. The place where they shot the movie, Baler, Aurora, is now the Surfing Capital of the Philippines.

1:11 the Hand of God, no wonder these guys were all fucked up, this scene is truly amazing, Killgore pin points with his hand and a rain of napalm drops in the enemy, Kurtz was a God among savages and Kilgore burned vietcongs for breakfast, before getting some surfing time, the same madness on different types of people, one, the chaotic madness "Kurtz" the other the institutionalized madness "Kilgore".

They intended to. From what I recall, They had dead bodies on set but the police / Army came and found them. The people working on their set all lost their passports and were obviously questioned. The guy who supplied them was supposed to be supplying them to schools for autopsies ect, Turns out the guy was a grave robber and was jailed.
Zachary Wilson
Zachary Wilson - 8 years ago
Ahh, in the days when CGI did not exist. When acting was actually good, and when people went to great lengths to make scenes look realistic. Because, I have heard, they actually blew up trees and flew planes, all to make it look realistic. Now all we do is sit in front of computers and lazily edit them in.

Ive noticed from this , and from Thin Red Line , that when calling in a strike they tell them whatv the target is "mortar fire from treeline" / Left 20 drop 50 . Machine gun , will adjust.

Why does the artillery or jets need to know what exactly theyre hitting ?
I mean theyre gonna drop the same shit , on the same target anyway . Why do they need to know its mortar fire ? (or machine gun ? )
Rikard Nilsson
Rikard Nilsson - 7 years ago
Well I'm not sure about pilots, but as a 10 year vet in the danish artillery having served as both observer, calculator (not sure what the UK/US nomenclature for it is, basicly the guy doing the numbers determining elevation, direction and charge for the guns) and gun-bunny (nickname for the guys running around the howitzer loading and laying it) I can probably shed some light on that:

The gunline will need to know what they're shooting at to know what grenades to use and what fuze to use, if it's a fortified position full of trenches artillery would probably start out with delay fuzes to topple over trenches and destroy fortifications, then follow it up with airbursts to shred everyone who wasn't buried alive.

However if they're shooting an armored battalion for example then they would have to adjust the amount of guns firing for a certain effect. an infantry platoon in the open that you want neutralized (brought to about 80% fighting strength) only need a couple of gun batteries, it takes even less if they are just being suppressed or routed, but to route an armor column they'd need maybe 10 times more gunlines (extremely cost-ineffective). they also need to know what they're shooting at to determine their efficiency when the effect report comes back from the observer so they can do a more efficient job next time.

as for the flyboys, Sure the pilot probably has a narrow selection of ammunition, which is why he needs to know if he's going to waste a bomb on 2 guys in a tree-line or just strafe it with his guns.

plus it's always nice knowing what you're shooting at.

Thats what almost every modern war film is about .
But this ...............
No , no no no .

It does have that as one of its themes .
But it is about Religion and superstition and Apotheosis .

Did you notice The Golden Bough on Kurtz;s desk ?
Put there for a vital reason .
How men make themselves gods .
Thats the key to the whole film .

The Golden Bough deals mainly with the "Scapegoat " ; What we created 3 world religions to cater to .
; The sacrificial God/ King that must be sacrificed each year to keep the crops growing and sun shining .

Look at all the Religious imagery in it

"Do you know what it means to summon fire from the sky? " Kurtz.

In the book , after killing Kurtz , Marlowe comes out, and the crowd bow down to him , and he STAYS there as the new God/King .
Thats how it was done in ancient Greece and Rome and in most other parts of the world .

The Philippine Air Force lent their UH-1 Hueys and F-5s for the filming of Apocalypse Now while the Philippine government was fighting essentially a civil war against Communist insurgents as well as Muslim secessionists. The helicopters were frequently sent back into combat and had to be hastily repainted the with the PAF symbols every time.

"The filmmakers negotiated the use of the country’s American-made military equipment, as well as assistance with logistics in remote locations. During shooting, Philippine helicopters and their pilots were often summoned for actual combat operations against revolutionary guerillas on the island of Mindanao, requiring the film crew to frequently change the fake U.S. insignia on the machinery back to Philippine Air Force markings. " -http://www.afi.com/members/catalog/DetailView.aspx?Movie=67464

"The helicopters [sic] scenes are a particularly intriguing element of the real and unreal again overlapping in the course of producing a film, with these Filipinos [sic] pilots in one instance performing as American airmen in Vietnam and then snapped back into reality to perform as Filipinos fighting a real, domestic insurgency. During filming, the copters had to be painted with U.S. Army markings and then repainted at night with the Philippine Air Force Insignia" -https://books.google.com.ph/books?id=MXox4YwdHLwC page 283-284

"...there were fewer than twenty Hueys in the whole Philippine air force, and their pilots never knew until that very morning whether they would be playing Apocalypse Now with us in the north at Baler or fighting with actual guerrillas on the island of Mindanao" -https://books.google.com.ph/books?id=0hp5oT74oOIC page 148

this movie blows my mind, especially this sequence with the fighter jets and helicopters. if that was done today in a movie it would be mostly cgi for the explosions and helicopters. which probably would be cheaper, safer and still look pretty impressive. But it just wouldn't have the same impact doing it all in camera.

The overall theme of apocalypse now is based of Joseph Conrad's novel heart of darkness. Basically the main character is exposed to more levels of de-humanization the more they go down the river. And Kilgore is supposed to symbolize the love of war

"The word “apocalypse” means to unveil, not the end of the world."

The meaning of the apocalypse is the opposite of what most people think. It does not mean the end of the world; it means the revealing of hidden secrets and the beginning of a heaven on earth. The apocalypse is starting now.

Robert Duvall is a very well known actor. The Godfather movies are also extremely well known. Very well known actor + very well known movie = 100% very well known and 100% very obvious. Both statements were very obvious and pointing it out was useless.

Because Captain Obvious is the hero we deserve, but not the one we need right now.

Kilgore jumping off his chopper and landing from a 40-m drop on one foot, one knee and one fist. The ground shakes. He slowly looks up. He is pissed off. He proceeds to send 20 gooks flying in a slo-mo roundhouse kick. Jesus H. Christ, they might even add lens flares. That's it, I am moving to Mexico.

"GOD DAMN IT I WANT THAT TREE LINE BOMBED... BOMB IT TO THE STONE AGE SON!". I can still hear the sound of a Mirage IIIC squad flying overhead and dropping bombs that I can only describe as like ridin' the lightnin'. The roar is incredible. It's beautiful. I have never heard anything more beautiful than the sound of bombs detonating and obliterating everything. Its a deeply spirtual experience. Its the closest to God you will ever get.

How can I take your sociopathic breakdown of this display of pointless destruction seriously if you can't even notice the lack of the most distinctive wing configuration ever on the airplanes you so enthusiastically jerk off to, not to even mention that the Mirage, as a French invention, was never even used by the armed forces of the United States. Get off the Internet and go back to killing ants on the playground.

Film was shot in Phillipines, without suppourt of Defense Dept. So all aircraft came from Phillipine Armed Forces. PhAF , at time, used F-5 , becouse of Ford's and Carter's Arms for Peace program. Most effective combat aircraft, F-16, F-4, and F-14, were denied to participating nations. The only exceptions were NATO allies, Israel, and Royal (pre revolutionary) Iran.

+bloodring12 And one more thing, firing a cannon on an insurgent boat is a lot more economical than firing a missile on a fighter jet. You don't need to overkill. For example, US Navy never used Harpoons on Somali pirates. Instead they used Phalanx CIWS or the Bushmaster chain gun because it is more economical.
CK Amor
CK Amor - 10 years ago
+bloodring12 Those F5's were decommissioned way back 2005 and ended the era of supersonic flight for the PhAF. Actually, it is a practical decision decommissioning those birds because they've already reached their maximum flight hours. Repair and refurbishment of F5's will cost more than a brand new jet. Don't worry, it's almost a done deal between Philippines and the Koreans for 12 brand new FA 50's which is lot better than F5's in terms of avionics, agility and payload.

+bloodring12 I think you should do some research before posting a comment. The Philippine Air Force acquired 37 F-5A/B from 1965 to 1998 (Wikipedia). That particular scene was shot in Baler, Aurora. The film used PhAF's F-5 Freedom Fighters for the napalm bomb scene.

Interesting... I always thought the F-5 was designed with the soul intention of being an affordable fighter jet for under developed countries and nothing else. I never thought the USAF would actually use them in combat when they had F-4's A-1's and F-105's to do the airstrikes.

Darrell Lai
Darrell Lai - 12 years ago
It's a shame the video didn't go on for 5 minutes longer because people who focus on the napalm line really miss the point of the scene. Kilgore wanted the beach so he could surf. In the next scene we find out that the napalm strike which he used to secure the beach had caused wind conditions so that the beach was un-surfable. It's a pretty unsubtle (but hilarious) metaphor for the US effort to bring democracy to Vietnam.
Darrell Lai
Darrell Lai - 12 years ago
They have all the pieces to win a physical fight in Vietnam sure, but remember the US also had to fight a war of ideology, which I would argue the US is not equipped to deal with even today. It is not just about apply force to destroy the VC, how can you get people to come out to the voting booths and the same time commit on the same people the largest bombing campaign in military history.
JohnnyRadman
JohnnyRadman - 12 years ago
I think it could've been done if the folks at home were willing to show support for it. The marines were the spartans of the day, tough and super adaptable. The U.S. army did an absolutely amazing job, too. They were just abandoned by the guys at home. At least that's my take on it. Asymetric warfare isn't a matter of whether the larger force can win. The larger force can always win; they have all the pieces necessary. It's just a matter of demoralizing them, making it not worth the trouble.

The fact of the matter is there is no way the US could have become conventionally militarily involved on Vietnam without losing prestige simple because the US military is not built for fighting wars of ideology or occupation; but rather to contain armored breakouts in Europe. Modern day theorists like Thomas Barnett show us the extent the modern professional high tech US military needs to be reformed in order to fight it. There is simple no way the draftee US Army could have done it in the 60s
Darrell Lai
Darrell Lai - 12 years ago
You call JFK a gutless wonder but his strategy of using SF to train fight in contentious countries and train guerrillas was probably the most effective military one of the cold war. Vietnam is a good example of it working on the Russian side and Afghanistan is a good one for the US which I believe had a much greater effect on causing the downfall of the USSR than Reagan did. The key part is that there must be some popular support for your cause in the region.
Darrell Lai

We can see from hindsight the best outcome would be for the US to step back and concentrate on other regions thru the use of Special Forces if they really thought militarily fighting communism was important. The domino theory did not come to fruition and the US could have just pointed to the "asian tigers" as examples of the benefits of capitalism.

Thank you for a civil and respectful discourse on this complex topic - a rare thing on "tube" Its hard to have a complete discussion in this limited space. I'm just of the "what if" and "woulda, coulda, shoulda" school about that whole thing. I know its largely grabbing at straws to think there could have been the desired outcome. The South was irredeemable. But I would like to think a better outcome was possible if things had been handled differently early on - before the assassination of Diệm.
Darrell Lai

The whole point of Duvall's character was to be a metaphor for the people actually running the war? His characterization was meant to be a composite of several high ranking officers. It seems you really missed the point of this scene.
Darrell Lai
Darrell Lai - 12 years ago
Define the term victory conditions needed to win the vietnam war and some sort of military/social doctrine needed to ensure it. You finished? Congratulation, you are in a better position that the top political and military minds available during the Vietnam war. The enormous difficulty in a actually having a coherent plan during the war shows the immense mountain the US needed to climb to even begin winning the war. Blaming it all on "the hippies" is a really big simplification.
Darrell Lai

But in the process made the wind conditions on the beach one of the worst to surf on. An apt metaphor for the Vietnam War don't you think?

Korea is not a good comparison since the existence of its division arouse form the liberation of the of the country from a foreign invader (Japan by the US and Soviets) rather than the suppression of a popular uprising.
Darrell Lai

So his political education gained from the time he spent in various socialist and communist organizations in France, Russia and China is forgotten because he used a rhetorical technique? It's pretty easy to re-purpose the language of all political revolutions because your end goals always tend to be the same (overthrowing your government).
homunculous007
homunculous007 - 12 years ago
Not to rehash the war with you, sir, but Uncle Ho was quoting Jefferson after WWII. I don't think he was a fully committed communist. Rather, communism seemed to be largely a means to an end - which was to expel all foreigners once and for all after decades of occupation and exploitation. I agree the South was corrupt beyond redemption and it would have ended like North/South Korea at best. But we would have avoided the massive geopolitical fallout from "losing" the first war in our history.

No napalm was used in this scene. They had a special pyrotecnic powder that creates clouds of fire. I remember the old tv show Movie Magic when they talked about this effect for Apocalypse Now. But yes indeed they destroyed all that jungle for the movie! No miniatures were constructed!

Operation Linebacker was in 1972, seven years after it would have had a decisive military and political effect on the north. McNamera admits his incompetence during this period. On the contrary, Operation Linebacker brought the north to Henry Kissinger's "peace" table where his "brilliant" negotiations resulted in loss of the entire country and a completely wasted thirty year effort. The Chi-Comms are still laughing at us. Vietnam should have been a slam dunk and changed history for the better.
Darrell Lai
Darrell Lai - 12 years ago
But the American's did bomb the north? Operation Linebacker was one of the biggest air campaigns in all of military history. It still didn't bring the North any closer to the negotiating table or democracy closer to Vietnam.

Those F-5's are magnificent.Death From Above. We should have bombed the north in '65. The Chinese never would have entered the war as we incorrectly assumed. They hate the Vietnamese to this day. History would be vastly different if we had bombed the north like any rational warrior would have done. Sun Tzu would agree. The Russians knew JFK was a gutless wonder. The Russians only respect a president in support and control of the military. See how differently they behaved with Reagan in charge!!

@npg68 Korea we got screwed by cutting deals with the Commie zipperheads. Vietnam we were days away from making the North submit, as confirmed by a top NVA General in his diary. We left because of peacefreak hippie pieces of shit complaining about "baby killing." Cuba/Bay of Pigs was not a war, and the primary fighting force was Cuban Exiles, which we refused support to, case in point they lost. We cut a deal in Desert Storm, then finished the job in 2005.
