Ok, so I really want to surf but I have a bad heart condition and it makes me super tired easily. Is it hard to do? I'm also not well in super deep waters but I can swim. What about sharks?

Cherokee New have you considered Stand Up Paddling? A lot of people surf really nicely with those and I don't feel they require as much energy as paddling

Hey! If you feel confident swimming, and don't mind staying in waist-to-chest high waters, surfing could totally be an option! Know when to just sit on your board and float for a couple of sets! It's a very relaxing activity as far as stress/adrenaline goes, but can definitely be physically taxing so just be sure to know your limits! My cousin has a very serious heart condition but is very active and has no problem surfing as long as she sits out when she needs to. Sharks depends on where you are - no sharks here in lil Rhodie. :)

Oh and always consider board / wetsuit rentals. They are cheaper, you don't need to transport them, etc... just play around and find something that you are comfortable with.

First of all, get a foam board to start. They are ceaper and require less maintainence. I would reccomend a longer board, because they are easier to paddle and stand up on. Invest in a solid leash because you reallt don't want have a cheap one that could break. Also, I would try to keep paymebt to a minimum, as things break, or they might not suit you. Beginers tip: catch a wave once it has already broken, because the whitewater is more consistant. Talk to experts in your local surf shop

I agree in a way. But I think if you try to do manouvres in the white water, when you get a nice wall to play with it makes it much easer.. I also hate to say it but body-boarding and/or swimming helps master/ get better at surfing your best. Skating too :) Keep frothing lol.

it's true. if you have your hands loose the water will whirl up between the fingers so no water goes through there and you have a larger amount of water that you push away than when you have your fingers close together

you need upper body and core strength more than you need to swim in those waves. in those waves you can walk out to the line up and walk in without swimming - timing and positioning is everything,,if you swim practice the lifegaurd swim with your head above the water

IF you ever get into any trouble in the surf; just float on your back and kick in towards the shore head first face up,if a wave comes at you, you can see it easy so you just stop and dive under it and then return onto your back and kick in slowly. Stay relaxed and heart rate normal as possible is the key.

Why comment on something you know little or nothing about? lol. If your hands are cupped you don't get enough power and quick entry into a wave, watch the professionals hands closely, never cupped. Stand up paddle boarding is different, that paddle is the most effective way to paddle a massive board standing up where as if you cup your hands surfing a short-board or a mal your'e exerting more energy than you should be, fact.

u should go to camp surf in San Diego! that is where I learned to surf for the 2nd time because my cousins used to live in Hawaii and my cousin's friend taught me how to surf when I was like 5 years old!=]

If you're not able to catch waves move forward on your board. If you pearl, or catch the nose of the board and wipeout, move back a bit. Paddle hard and be committed to catching the wave; fear holds you back so let it go.
