This dog surfing contest is sanctioned by the Helen Woodward Animal Center. Surfing is NOT harmful to these dogs. Each dog has their own style on the board, they are concentrating on balance, not "smiling" for the cameras. Watch other videos and see excited dogs barking, doing 360's on the surfboard, etc.

+sungaruner Umm looks like they having fun to me I'm sure sitting at home sniffing your loafers is way more exciting bet when these dudes are packing the surfboard in the car their dogs are jumping like crazy kids by the door to go with. I know because i use to take my dogs to a lake and swam them about a 100 yards out to a floating dock and they love every minute of it and can't wait to go.

Don't think the dogs aren't having fun. I remember bashing waves with a blow-up raft, my husband, and our dog Gabby. My husband thought that Gabby was cold and not enjoying herself, so he was going to take her back to camp, but Gabby wanted to go out some more, she came running back to the waves and swam back to the raft. Dogs might not look as if they are having fun when they are on or in the water, but it is just because they keep their mouths closed so they don't swallow too much water.

I don´t know if they were or were not scared. But I know, that those who say they were, have no idea if it was the truth, or just them trying to balance and basing accusations on prejudice. I´m the same as them when I want to ride longer, I´m clinging to... for instance the rope, when I´m balancing on it over water, just to get a little bit further and not to get wet. Preach on! Dogs love to socialize, especially when they are doted on with praise and attention. Every dog I have ever had has put up with my goofy crap and insisted I do so when I failed to deliver. Most dogs are more intelligent than their owners. Which one was wearing shitty diapers at 9 months of age? Not the dog. I trained one of my dogs to run along fallen trees in a tree farm as a young pup - that skill almost got him drafted by the NTSB to be a search/rescue dog...nope, he was my pet.

Dogs want/need to be challenged and most respond well, even the pink poodle who was ripping it up. My late AmStaff would jump off a 10 foot high dock to fetch a stick in the river. Did I put him up to it? Nope, he figured it was quicker than running around the long way and it was settled.

Oh....please.....do we always have to be policed? can't people just have fun with their dogs? If the dogs did not like it they would either bite the owners or refuse to cooperate... you can't make a dog do what it does not want to do....I know I have trained many. As far as calling out Animal Welfare...if you look alot closer they are present at the contest and have provided lifeguards for the dogs....and obviously granted the permits after an inspection required by new laws for animals.

Animal welfare need to step in - most of those dogs were terrified. Owners have same mentality as empty headed celebrities who use their dogs as a fashion accessory. Fair enough if a dog wants to do this, but how many of them have been forced? If their tails are up they are enjoying it; if their tails are down, they are terrified.

Boogie board-ers and some surfers tie themselves to their boards too but also, I don't think the dogs are tied to the boards, but rather the boards are tied to the dogs so they don't lose the boards and if something did happen to the dog, like it went underwater for too long, you'd know to look for the board to locate your dog.

OK, I'm a little on the fence on this, but mostly it's Ok. I agree with others who say dogs have brains. They certainly do have far more intelligence than most people ever give them credit for. The only thing I can see here is some of the dogs are tied on the boards and appear to be a bit scared. However, no harm was done to them and the owners are right there to see that nothing happens. I'm sure they won't need group therapy after this, so just chill ok?

Your dog may not be afraid and may even enjoy it but that doesn't mean all dogs like it. If you watch the video you can plainly see that some of the dogs are afraid. Wouldn't you consider it cruel given that some of these dogs are clearly unhappy about the experience?

Look, people, those of you who think this is cruel? You must never have had a dog. They LOVE any mutual activity, and if it gets them affection and admiration, you know they'll love it. Even if they apear to be scared, that's them putting a million years of evolution to better use. I promise you, a dog exposed to challenging things by its humans is happier than a dog treated like an infant.

I'm glad you don't force your dog to surf and that he loves it. That's great and I'm sure he's happy and I support that. I didn't finish watching this rather long video with repeats because most of the dogs are either tied to the board or their body language shows that they're really not into it and kinda scared looking. They may in fact be having fun but that is not apparent for the most part. So, thumbs down.

To the people who think this is cruel to the dogs.My dog surfs and he loves it. He started doing it himself. He kept trying to jump on my board. He loves to swim so I took him out on my board one day and he loved it. One day I fell off and he stayed on all the way to the beach. He's been surfing since on his own and goes nuts when I pull out the boards and get ready to go. You people need to realize that dogs have a brain. I don't force him to surf. He enjoys it and so do many other dogs.

I've seen dogs who go nuts to hop on a sled to go down a hill, it's really based on the what the dog likes. Dogs can learn to love this stuff and then they go crazy for it when the know it's time to surf. It looks sad when they fall off, and their balance position is the same as their scared position... so it appears a lot worse than it is. They would jump off if they hated it.

I wonder if the lady who said she started taking her puppy out to the beach at 7 weeks old realizes that she took an incredible risk that her puppy could have contracted parvovirus (a highly dangerous virus to puppies) within a 4 month window, and that high-transit places like beaches are one of the many hotspots for such infection. :(

just look at them, they look so confused, and they arent even surfing - they are just trying to keep their balance while their board is being pushed to he beach by the waves. it breaks my heart to see thos poor dogs lose their balance and fall into the sea, especially the smaller ones who dont have a chance to manage a board that weighs 5x more than themselves. poor animals, dressed up in stupid outfits, forced to do unnatural things for the sake of our entertainment

why do people do so much stupid shit to their animals. they are animals for christs sake, if your dog likes to go for a swim and even sit on your surfboard with you - fine, great, you are lucky to have a dog that likes doing "human" activities. but once you start arranging competitions like these, animals are being forced to to stuff that is frightening and makes absolutely no sense to them. now that the fun is out and the owner is on the beach watching, what the hell is in it for them?

Been watching a few of these because of the Surfing Bulldog Tillman, and there is definitely a difference between dogs that love to do this and owners that force their dogs to do it for their own amusement and attention..not good.
