it's such an awful wave though, it's a huge drop and that's it, even if you make it most get cleaned up by the whitewater anyways, it's got this malevolent energy about it where it draws the surfer in to take the drop but doesn't allow you to outrun the whitewater and ride the face much, beautiful to watch, I wouldn't of surfed there when I was younger, I hated getting held down.

+Mr GreenThumb lol. my theory is that some of us (geezers) grew up on looney tunes which were filled with great classical music so therefore we've come to love it.
whereas others grew up later in an era that did not use that type of music but some other bullshit music. thus denying them a chance to be exposed to wagner, beethoven, mozart, and the like.
so now when they hear it for the first time, it makes whippersnapper's cry.

Went to Mavericks the first time a few days ago and those waves do get big watched as rocks about 40 feet high a mile away get enveloped by those waves most of them were 20 to 30 footers but occasional 40 footers showed themselves. its scary shit in the winter they get bigger imagine how high whose waves were during the storm last winter with those hurricane force winds? They were probably over 100 ft high during that storm and normally they average around 40 to 60 ft in the winter!

I agree. I get that paddling in is the purest way to go but sometimes you need the right tool for trade. Those bigger monsters would have been eaten up with a jet ski and tow board. Just saying.

Interesting! Waimea is warm with a beach and a shorebreak. Mavericks is cold, thick soupy pea green water and four times the paddle out. The boards are long for getting possession. I would really think twice about critiquing anyone's performance at this spot. Respect to anyone who charges at Mavericks.

It would have been better with longer clips. Just making the bottom of the wave isn't enough -- we need to see what happens after the drop. Too many of these clips were far too short.

because the wave reforms twice you can't really right slide because after the first reform the wave kicks up to quickly; everybody who tries it in this video eats it. You gotta drop in, race to the bottom. Then it reforms again; then hopefully you can nudge over to the shoulder and not get eaten by the white water. So many people out!

That sucked balls. It's uncomfortable and stiff enough without cold water and wetsuits.

Then you throw-in the fact that you can't get any angle on it, no face because the lips were so damn heavy and forcing you to drop to the effin' bottom before you could even think about a turn.

That took about a day.

There was no time for anything else. After the drop, guys were just enjoying the second-or-two respite before the curtain fell on them.

Man, a HEAVY curtain.

This is the third massive wipeout ive seen jamie Mitchel take and survive 1. 60 foot wave broke in front of him at Todos Santos in a Long brothers episode 2007 2. that famous one in france last year 70 foot wave freefell into it the wave came down on him hard. This one the biggest mavericks wave ive seen anyone on and then to wipeout !he took the full force on his body. Hellman he will probly ride the biggest wave ever surfed in the future and i'll bet it'll be at Cortez Bank.

If only the barrel would hold open consistently. For someone that has surfed the place...why can't the surfers take a high line? Is it too steep to hold an edge? Also, how common is it for surfers to go left? The little footage I have see, it looks pretty good with less competition.

Holy Fu$#ing S%^t!!! :O I don't think I've ever seen Mavericks that big! I loved surfing big waves 25 yrs ago, but this would scare the shit out of me. The way the wave curled and the drop on some of those waves would definitely halt me as I would be looking at the sets and thinking "Ummm.... No!".
