its called tow-in surfing. when this spot (Teahupo'o) in Tahiti gets really big, you need a jet ski to catch the wave by matching its speed. hope that helps

About 10 years ago I had this experience at Blacks on a nasty scary 20' day! I know it's not Teahupoo but it was my Teahupoo for that day! I was in fear of my life after my first over the falls, held down for what seemed like several minutes, and having that cliché moment when you suck in that first gulp of air just to have half the air be the ocean that fills your lungs then BOOM, the next wave in the set of what seemed like 100 waves starts the process all over again......I was dead.

I said nothing about adrenaline, pure fear is what it's all about. I'm sure after your first major get off (all are major at Teahupoo) the fear subsides sum-what to adrenaline until your next get off. This would be right at the time your rail digs in and your life flashes in front of you! ;-)

They have a much lower center of mentality. Only joking there, they do have a lower center of gravity and they can kick and paddle into very shallow waves deeper than most short boards. Mals are worse cause many old men surf them and they should just stay home with gran if they need bigger equipment,get a dick pump. :-)

I remember this as a small fun day at Teahupoo. There was a couple of head dips to be had but no real barrels! I thought it was quite fat and weak really. I took off on a couple switch to make it less boring!
