I was @ the pipe masters in 86 or 87 ...not sure of year ...(many BUDS ago) ....Derek Ho dropped into a HUGE tube , which seemed to swallow him up...when he popped out da tube , the beach went bazerk ...we all knew that one wave won him the contest ....The pipe was breaking bigger than this day ...it was breaking at the 3rd reef ..then mushing in to the inside reefs and building back up to some huge faces.... is there anyone else out there who was there....ALOHA

Pipeline, when it's big is an amazing sight to see. 80 degrees in the shade with a light breeze, clean coarse sand on the beach, bathrooms, clean water showers and parking a few hundreds yards away, very nice place for the locals whose lives can revolve around taking off work when the weather conditions are perfect.

At 1:43 you see a rider going over the top of the wave because it is closing out and there is no chance to continue. Why doesn't the rider punch through the face of the wave to get through to the backside like this rider at 4:09 rather than go over the top? Is the punch through method used frequently, if no, why not?

+AziZune When do surfers use the punch through method to exit a wave? I think I know part of the answer to that. If a large portion of the wave closes out in front of them and it's too dangerous to straighten out because you are going to get hit by the lip, you punch through the face.

thats nothing, when we were kids here in Australia we used to have to row out little boat out in waves like that every day to catch fish for the family, and that was after walking 50 miles home from school, carrying a bag of cement just to toughen us up :) uphill too. And we had to do homework later.

Ya, good waves. Biggest is before you come to NS, just before winters. We ride em without cameras. End of spring is for tournament surfers, locals get da kine.20-25ft waves early winters. Good riding though brah, nice sheds. Like to see em on cameras.

This was definetely not bigger than the 1985. Do your research. It was not even close!! Mickey Nielsen, Ronnie Burns and Mike Ho were taking off 15+ Hawaiian scale waves. This was big and more perfect, but 1985 was BY FAR the biggest.

he most likely went over the falls so he got smashed around a bit after that he most likely paddled back to surface for a breath of air and just kept on going under until the set calmed down and gave him a chance to paddle out. Normally it would be a good idea to go to shore but since it was a contest he most likely went back out.

What do you do if you fall like Dorian at 6:21, does the rip pull you out and west, into bigger breaking waves? So do you try and get back to the beach? Or do you wait for the set to finish and paddle back out?
