Was lucky to catch over a dozen BHS shows back in the day. First was in a tiny club in Phoenix, I think it was either 90 or 91. Then saw em a bunch afterwards. Over a dozen shows. Gibby Hayne's and his Problem (his solo band) played the Casbah here in San Diego to just a couple hundred people. It was cool seeing that after seeing the Surfers play in front of tens of thousands at Lollapalooza. THAT was awesome. Haynes was tripping hard for during his solo show. The mans drug of choice. Butthole Surfers were the opening band for Nirvana at the San Diego sports arena. They killed it then too. What a lineup Nirvana with the Butthole Surfers as the 'warmup' act. I think many concert goers preferred the crazy zaniness of the Surfers compared to the totally corporate In Utero performance.

Saw them in the '80s in a small club in Denver. The crowd was like a typhoon, it never stopped. The band was awesome. My friends were on acid, I wasn't but felt like I was. In 40 plus years of concerts, one of the most incredible shows I've ever seen!

First time I saw The Butthole Surfers was at the WUST Music Hall in Washington DC, an old Gospel music radio hall which is now the site of the 930 club. They opened for the Dead Kennedys and they were FAR better than them. I had never heard of or seen them before, so you can imagine my 16 year-old reaction to Gibby coming out with huge hair and torn dresses on. Behind them on the stage was a huge painting of people reading the bible and working in the fields, quite a thing for my still-developing mind.

Great video -~ thanks for sharing!

Excellent example of the Post-PuNk time period. As the steam was running out of the PuNk movement (ten years at those energy levels would kill most people!), more musical styles where being experimented with in the Underground Scene. Much of which was not commercial viable or commercial sought after. Not unlike the coming GRUNGE Scene which started out Underground, but became VERY much part of popular culture in the early Nineties.

I shot this video. The Buttholes were blowing my mind with their shows in NYC so I checked out a video camera from NYU where I was going and shot this gig standing on a chair just off the corner of the stage. I first saw them at 8BC, then CBGBs, and then when they came back to town the next time it was for this show. Paul Leary told me I missed the real show which was the previous night at Danceteria where Gibby had sex on stage. But musically this show was awesome.

And by reading your wikipedia page you have done pretty much all kinds of interesting stuff. Prob not even half aren't there. Been a huge fan since Locust Abortion was released. Think I was like 15 or something then. Subscribed your channel. Love Cherub and that Entering Texas is fantastic! So you are the guy who directed one of my fav short films of all time. I'm fucking impressed! You don't see stuff like that or hear music like that these days. Will let my friends know. They all have that on crappy pic like I do. +The Butthole Surfers Rule! A few friends and I were huge Butthole Surfer fans in the 80s and 90s. I must've seen them 30 times or so, mostly in California, and a bunch of those times I snuck in my tape deck. Paul has always been my favorite too! Persistence pays off and we were lucky enough to meet and talk with them a few times. The first time we met them, Paul invited us backstage after a show at the IBeam and no one was there but us and the band! We talked for a good hour, mostly with Paul and Jeff, and they got us super stoned. Funny as hell and super nice. They're older now and Gibby can be moody, but I think they still appreciate their fans a lot and are very approachable .I hope you get to meet them yourself someday.

+The Butthole Surfers Rule! Thanks! Gibby Haynes does make a cameo in the film - he is Sockhead's accuser. And we used a bunch of Buttholes music on the soundtrack. But the version we wrote for the Surfers (with the help of Gibby) was a totally different movie. It was conceived as a balls out transgressive horror comedy very much in the Butthole's spirit, but we could not get it made. Ironically it was impossible to raise a few hundred thousand dollars to make that super low budget movie, but then we actually got a studio interested in making a 10 million dollar version of the basic idea if we completely rewrote it as a comedy with a whole different tone. We were thrilled to get the chance to make a movie period so we embraced the opportunity and did a page one rewrite that was focused on zany comedy and not transgressive eyeball melting art horror. In some ways it was too bad but that's what happened. Alex Winter and I directed a short film called Entering Texas which is on Youtube - it was part of our Impact Video Magazine and it contains a music video for Fast Song with the Buttholes. Also I did Cherub - a college film at NYU that incorporated the live performance from CBGBs. And I wrote a few concepts for Pepper and Jingle of a Dog's Collar which Gibby liked but they didn't do. Too bad - I loved my idea for Pepper, but it will never see the light of day...

Oh by the way +Thomas Stern, I liked Freaked quite a bit. I noticed Keanu in there, too, haha, but just asking... why didn't the Surfers participate in the film? My understanding was you developed the script with them in mind...

That's excellent! You partnered up with Alex Winter? Very triumphant. I saw the Cherub video, the one with someone eating cereal at the beginning then running naked through GCS (thought I recognized it), in the comments someone was flipping out about the guys "stealing" the video, saying that "Alex" or whoever had made it, haha.

The versions of the Bar-B-Q movie out there are all most heinous. Do you know of any excellent versions with triumphant quality, and where I can download them?

Thanks, I'd even buy it off you if you still have one. I Wikipedia'd you up, you're a cool, guy.

+Luther Beckett I remember going by CBs and asking Hilly if I could shoot the Buttholes show. He said he didn't care if the band was fine with it. I wish it was that way these days! Everyone wants a location release signed now... so anyway I went to sound check and met the band. Paul was super friendly and told me about a great camping trip the band had just made to Canyon De Chelly where they had a big bag of green pot and a bunch of mushrooms. It did sound fun. Then I met Gibby who was a bit more aloof and enigmatic. He toyed with a paper cutter that was on the bar and spoke in riddles. But he said yes as long as I promised to send him the tape, which many people neglected to do he said. My friend Alex Halpern and I then made a short film as bookends for the performance of Cherub at the show. It featured Alex running naked though Grand Central Station. That won over the band and we became good friends. I went to many Buttholes shows after that and worked with the band quite a bit. They were a big influence on me - Gibby actually stayed with me and my then partner Alex Winter and we all wrote a screenplay together that ended up getting made as Freaked for 20th Century Fox. It was a lot different than the version we wrote with Gibby, but he did do a cameo in it during the unveiling of Sockhead...

+hawcubites Except for Gibby! Paul was my favorite to chat with. King is super kind (and gentle, ha!) and Pinkus is a rock solid dude. Theresa...well...she was kicked out multiple times, and I could understand why! I got to book them in 2008 at a 200 seat venue in coastal New Hampshire. Stage was too small for props/lights so it was just the small house lights. Here is a high quality audio link: https://archive.org/details/bhs2008-07-28.c460b.flac

The Butthole Surfers were one of the greatest bands of all time from their first to the last album and everything in between. Their live shows were always amazing. Saw them first at the Cat Club in NYC in 85 with the full holy shit films, flames and naked body paint girls.  At least a dozen great shows all the way to the NYE show at the Fillmore in SF in 2010 and the last tour.  Anyone who didn't like any BHS live show was artistically brain dead. This show was amazing. In the tiny venue was crowd surfing with Lucy for a full hour.

Punk was as stiff as a board by 86...I guess nobody told these folks.
I mean it had been around for over 10 years...so these guys were just a 'little brother band' hoping to ride the train of punk that had long left the station.

+J. Dennis Thomas Well you've shown your true colors. You insult my appearance and my singing. That truly shows how truly pathetic and narrow minded you are.

My original post that start all this was a simple question. I just wanted to know how the BS changed that guy's life. I just thought it was a simple and polite question. It was met with profanity, insults and in your case personal insults on my physical appearance, which really shows how pathetic you are. You can't come up with anything better?

So neither you nor the other dude can really answer me. How did they "change your life"? Usually a life changing experience would be something like experiencing real combat in a war zone, accepting Christ, rejecting Christ and becoming an atheist, serving in the peace corps, getting married, having a near death experience. But you bozos, throw around a serious phrase like "life changing" like it's nothing. It's like saying, that burrito I had today changed my life.

So tell me, on your death bed as you look back at your life, noting the pivotal points in your life that define you as a person, noting the things that you did that you may want to be remembered for...can you honestly say "it was seeing the Butthole Surfers live"?

It was a simple question and I was seeking enlightenment. And you call me narrow minded? You insult my appearance?

My videos are not for performance, they are to teach some people I know how to play guitar. They don't promote me. I'm not trying to impress anyone with my playing or singing. I'm just trying to help people out.

You on the other hand are an arrogant self promoting prick.

BTW you should brag about your rescue dogs. That, in my opinion, is your only saving grace.
J. Dennis Thomas
J. Dennis Thomas - 7 years ago
For an old fat guy you sure act like a little crybaby.

I've got two rescue dogs. I don't advertise that fact because I'm not looking for adulation from the internet. I rescued the dogs and they are part of my family. It doesn't matter to me if people know.

So my G+ page says "I lived in Austin" as far as I know that is a default setting. I never looked into it.

And self-promotion? Absolutely. I'm self employed. If I didn't self-promote I couldn't feed rescue dogs or donate to other charities.

And "urbanite"? As if I'm supposed to feel bad for living in a city? C'mon that's just stupid.

You are a very narrow minded person. And I suspect that you're a sad and lonely person because you are crying out on YouTube in a negative way to garner attention. You crave human interaction and the only way you can get it is by trolling.
HerdingDogRescuer

+J. Dennis Thomas >>One of the reasons I moved to Texas was because of what the Surfers were doing. Definitely changed my life.<<

OK You got me. You didn't actually say "life changing experience". You actually said "Definitely changed my life". There's a real big difference there.

You are an ultimate jackass. HerdingDogRescue has naught to do with me. It's about the dogs you dolt. It's about promoting saving rescue dogs. Doing that changed my life. It got me out of self and into helping amazing dogs.

Do I have my picture up like you do? No. I have a picture of a dog you jackass. Does my Google+ page say "Lived in Austin" like you do, as I just know that you are sooo proud of that.? No..It's not about me. On the other hand you are ALL about you. You are all about self promotion.

So you lived in Austin and rub shoulders with the surfers,,,so what. I've met them too. I've lived in cool places and have met wonderful people too. I'm not on here bragging about it. The most amazing people that I've met are average everyday people who selflessly help others and rescue animals from horrific conditions.

You on the other hand are an arrogant, self serving, judgmental, urbanite who is totally into self promotion.

I hope enjoy surfing buttholes with all your cool friends.  Hopefully you will someday have a true life changing experience that will allow you to see that it's not about self promotion.

Where did I say I was "cool"? Also where did I say I had a "life changing experience at Butthole Surfers show"?

Hearing their music changed my life. It was a one of the catalysts that moved me out of Ohio and into Austin TX. Becoming friends with the band changed my life because they introduced me to so many different and amazing people.

Am I cool? Fuck yes I'm cool.

And look at your Google "name" HerdingDogRescue. Is that not an attempt to shout to the world how "cool" you are? Because you claim to rescue dogs? If you actually rescued dogs you would probably be too consumed with that and you wouldn't be trolling YouTube talking about bands you hate. Go rescue a herding dog and shut the hell up.

Obviously you weren't in the right circle. I've never paid to see these dudes once. One of the reasons I moved to Texas was because of what the Surfers were doing. Definitely changed my life. I still see these dudes around. They are still playing music and pushing the envelope although in different ways. The bass player, Pinkus, plays banjo in a band called Pure Luck and it's bad-ass. They are relevant. Always have been. No band has ever replicated what the Surfers did. And the band members don't even try to replicate it with new projects. They do whatever they want.

When you make any sort of impact on the music world please let us know.

In my last reply to you, as all my comments have been to you, just that, replies, I pointed out just some of your misunderstandings of simple English. You clearly glossed over the comment in your haste to unsuccessfully attempt a witty put down rather than carefully reading. If anyone doesn't know when to shut the fuck up it's you, bleating on about the same bullshit. You are a silly cunt that buys records and goes to see bands numerous times when you don't even like them. How on earth would a tit like you ever understand the power of rock n roll.
On a personal level I hope this teaches you that you aren't anywhere near as smart as you think you are. You've been slapped into place each time you comment. Enough! Learn from it and move on unless you are happy to remain the silly cunt that you are.

So rant away, I am getting off the merry-g-round now. Have a great day.

Anton Haq - 7 years ago
Oh my Lord, I was the one that made the comment about it being life changing so I didn't jump into anything, I merely replied. I also said we were both above the norm so how do I build myself up and put you down. If anyone got riled, that was you dear, if I was any more chilled out I'd be horizontal. You constantly make idiotic mistakes through misunderstanding, you're a typical conceited prick that genuinely thinks they're above most. I could go on pointing out your dipshit errors but why bother, especially when it involves repetition - take the hint, this is a done deal and you're still bleating on like some daft bitch. You are obviously bored out of your thick head, there is life beyond your computer screen, try engaging in it and you may loose the urge to act the cunt on you tube.
On rare occasions I come across morons like you in daily life and I can assure you I'd speak to them as I have to you. Whether or not you believe that, personally I don't give a shit, I also don't give a shit that you can't understand how music can be life changing.
HerdingDogRescuer
HerdingDogRescuer - 7 years ago
+Anton Haq You are correct, I'm not offended by your language. I just stated that it's a mark of an ingnorant and uncreative mind.

Honestly, you did miss the point of my comment, which wasn't even directed to you anyway. You inserted your judgement, insults, profanity and intollerance into that conversation. You just jumped in with your insutls and missed the whole point, which was how did the Buthole Surfers change that peron's life.

I'm not playing innocent. I asked a question that's it. (I did knock the Butthole Surfers, but so did you actually.) You attacked me unprovoked and unsolicited. Then you paint me like I am the ultimate evil while the whole time you are the one spewing profanity, insults, anger and intollerance.

If you want to elevate your ego by saying that you have a "standard of articulation and eloquence above the norm" then by all means live that dream. Build yourself up and put me down if that toots your horn. It all means naught to me. I am just calling a spade a spade. The more you write, the more it proves my point. Thanks for making this so easy.

The truth of the matter is that the profanity rants that you have "articulated" here is common fare on YouTube. You ARE the norm, you are not above it.

What you do is the same as road rage, You sit in front of your computer disconnected from humanity and rage on someone in a way that you would NEVER do in real lfe because that would violate the moral code of decency. But you feel it's OK to do it here because you are not looking in my face when you spew your hate and intollerance.

Go out and enjoy the day.
Anton Haq
Anton Haq - 7 years ago
+HerdingDogRescuer So now you try and make out you're a reasonable guy who just wanted clarification. Do not insult my intelligence playing innocent. Fair enough, the written word doesn't always portray the intended tone but your initial comment was cocky and provocative and there is no mistaking that. Had you been reasonable I would have had no problem giving a more detailed explanation but I'm afraid it's too late now, why should I bother?
I also think it's evident that both of us have a standard of articulation and eloquence above the norm so let's drop the mutual accusations of illiteracy and being grammatically challenged. I also don't believe that you're the least bit offended at any language I've used, personally I don't have a problem with words, they are just that, words.
My initial assessment of you was bang on target, you're a wind up merchant looking for an argument, most likely out of boredom, what you didn't bargain on was the fact that you aren't the only one able to string a sentence together.
Thanks for caring, have a great day, weekend, life yourself.

+Anton Haq Does you mother know you are online?

People can like whatever they want. I like all sorts of music. I've got no issues there at all. I like some pretty weird stuff and I recall being ridiculed when I went and saw these guys and when I bought their records. Yes records.

My concern is the "this changed my life" statement. I've seen lots of awesome concerts over the years, but none of them changed my life. I fail to see how a band or concert could "change your life", especially a band like the Butthole Surfers. So I was asking for clarification on that point.

That was the purpose of my orignal comment that triggered your grammtically incorrect spewing of profanity and hate. I ask a simple question without insulting anyone and you chime in and spew insults and anger. Then you have the gall to make all these accusations and judgements about me that have nothing to do with the comment.

You are the sad, twisted and intollerant person here. Everything you've said has proved that point and I dare say anything you will say will do nothing bu solidify that point for all who read the comments.

Have a great day!

+HerdingDogRescuer Oh I don't think so, don't try and be clever, you're too feeble minded. Why don't you work on your literacy or are you too busy going to see bands you don't like and then watching clips of them on you tube?
I've never known such a dipshit get their knickers in a knot because people appreciate music that they don't like. That's what this is about, your bullshit, you're the type of prick that would argue with a brick wall. The sad thing is, if you did see the band back in the day, you must be in your 40s now and this is how you choose to spend your time by acting the silly cunt on you tube.

You call me illiterate but it certainly appears that you are challenged in that area.

>>Who mentioned popularity dipshit, oh, that would be you and I'd hardly call the Butthole Surfers popular, <<

Sentences that ask a question generally end with a "?". I see you have problems with that concept as your profane rant is full of grammatical errors

Also that was a run and really should have be separated into two sentences.

You obviously missed the point of my initial comment and you didn't read my response to your first profane rant.

Thank you for proving my point and broadcasting your ignorance to the world.

Have a nice day.

+HerdingDogRescuer Who mentioned popularity dipshit, oh, that would be you and I'd hardly call the Butthole Surfers popular, especially at the time of this clip. Because you don't think much of them hardly represents the opinion of everyone else. Also if you don't rate them then you're more of a cunt than I thought, you don't like them yet you saw them 'numerous times'. How utterly fucking gormless.
So you take issue with my profanity, I take issue with your illiteracy, if you want to express that you did something as well, it is 'too', double 'o' not 'to' you feeble minded idiot.
