+Russell Teapot Yeah, a Sax is considered woodwind because it uses a reed to produce sound whereas a brass instrument uses the buzzing of the lips. However, the whole point of the Sax was to basically be a hybrid between the two in many ways.
Russell Teapot
Russell Teapot - 6 years ago
oooh, it's a woodwind instrument because the element that makes the sound it's a wood reed, I thought it was a brass one, because it's made out of brass. Thank you for lettiing me search about that

Amazing. Just found out his background is Lebanese from his father's side, and that he incorporated Middle Eastern musical styles in his music. You can hear it a bit here.
DeadPistolsBrainGerms
DeadPistolsBrainGerms - 6 years ago
+Brutalgruve Dick Dale actually did get a lot of it from relatives though. Misirlou was made when a fan bet him to make a song using only one string. Dale remembered his uncle or some relative playing it on the Oud using only one string. I don't think Dale went out of his way to learn Phrygian or Double Harmonic Scales. It probably came naturally to him due to his surroundings. He has even said a few times he can't play any scales. I'm sure he can it's just he doesn't know he is and/or can't name the scale and its notes. Misirlou basically shows you the entire Double Harmonic scale. It practically is the scale.
Jonas Henriksson
Jonas Henriksson - 6 years ago
Yes, and Dale claimed in several interviews that his style of playing the guitar wasn't even modelled on another guitarrist, but rather the drummer Gene Krupa, and he wanted to incorporate that rhythm into his playing style. This song in particular has a Krupa style drum break.
Brutalgruve

I can see how you might take my point differently then intended, and I may have taken yours.  We are on the same page.
RainPoetry
RainPoetry - 8 years ago
+Brutalgruve Agree that he's a great surf guitarist, and of course many musicians are exposed to different forms of scales and music, because music really knows no boundaries and barriers.. And it's quite well known Dick Dale was exposed to and practiced Lebanese folk music as a child through his father's side of the family. I don't think that takes away any of his brilliance and innovative accomplishments as a musician.
Brutalgruve
Brutalgruve - 8 years ago
+RainPoetry It is common for musicians to learn and play many different modes/scales.  Beatles to Devin Townsend to Lorena Mckennitt.   Phrygian mode has been used for eons, not getting the amazing Lebanese.  Dick dale is a great surf guitarist (period)

Riding an E chord, with a lot of sliding on the low E, and a little freestyle pentatonic on the 12th fret.
Some double stop sliding on the high E and B.

DeadPistolsBrainGerms - 6 years ago
+MattikusMaximus Usually hate people going all like "figure it out yourself noob," but I can't argue with you. You're right. Plus, Dick Dale's stuff isn't too hard to learn by ear in my opinion. It always revolves around a key in E. E minor... E Double Harmonic... E Phrygian Dominant... Just play around those scales and you can play most of Dick Dale's stuff.
MattikusMaximus
MattikusMaximus - 6 years ago
If you're good enough to play this, you're probably good enough to figure it out without a tab.

No, but people seemed more ashamed of it. Compare the Monkees who hated themselves to Disney bands like the Jonas Brothers who don't get why they are hated at all. I agree though, the past decades look so much better because most of the crap has been sifted out and we're all left with the gold

Surf Rock Requirements: Animal type drummer, Groovy Bassist, and REVERB! Surf rock has to have reverb or it is just rockabilly. The key is to get the effect of a huge wave surrounding you, which acts as a large echo chamber. Vocals not necessary, but when present must have extremely happy tones or tones of excitement such as the HEY's in miserlou. Remember, the waves are rolling! So Must the Instruments. Dick Dale is one of the best. There is a reason his song is on Pulp Fiction WIPE OUT

That's the point about dumb commercial music : you get forgotten. I'm willing to bet that in 30 years everyone will be woaw the 2010s were so much better than today just because the good stuff like Buckethead, Shaka Ponk, Limp Bizkit, Arctic Monkeys and so on will be remembered and the stupid stuff will have disappeared.
