I would believe this if the drone was about 35 feet in diameter and the drone pilot was in a chase helicopter. This thing would have to generate about 180lbs of thrust to pull this guy that fast.

Freefly Systems - 7 years ago
Definitely real, no reason we would try and fake this. Was just to try it out for fun! Plus the ALTA produces 350W continuous, 950W peak per motor. So that comes to 3.75 horsepower continuous, 10.19 hp peak, so once the boarder gets a little momentum the ALTA can pull enough to get up to some speed.
Freefly Systems
Freefly Systems - 7 years ago
Yes Kalvin, the boarder runs at the beginning to get some momentum and then once moving on the water, the drone takes over pulling as far as the operator is comfortable
Maarten Kros

This is complete BS, absolutely impossible. I dare the operator to do it again, recording with a another drone, the stain forces. I'm a commercial pilot, a wakeboarder and a drone operator. Great use of After effects and looks like he's fooled a lot of people...

If you can understand the forces and weight required to move a wakeboard and understand how much power is needed + lift to move a small aircraft you will then comprehend why this is impossible.

JUST HIS WEIGHT ALONE COULD EASILY PULL THE DRONE OUT OF THE SKY

Great use of AE and entertaining video.

It takes a lot of momentum to keep a skimboard moving, especially in water that deep. If i buy an $18k multirotor and try this and it fails to produce the same continous speed they appear to get will you reimburse me the 18 g's? Yes i easily have $18,000 i could piss away.

It's an 18 thousand dollar multirotor used to lift heavy hi end film cameras.
Since he started getting pulled already on plane, the force to pull him in minimal compared to his weight. It's real.

How many of you think this is real? :) A drone like that has an effective lift/pull of 2-3 kgs, so pulling a 80kg guy (with the resistance of the water) at speeds shown in the video would require a lot more strength. Also, the splashes are kinda out of whack. But nice vid.

they never show you the full picture you would need a real helicopter to do that think of it look at a speedboat you need a powerful engine on it to pull somebody that's wrong would have to be strong enough to lift somebody in the air
Rcbif
Rcbif - 7 years ago
00:18 is the "whole picture". It does not need to be strong enough to lift somebody. He starts on plane, so as long as speed is kept, required force needed is minimal.
Terry Leahy
Terry Leahy - 7 years ago
do they think people are stupid this is totally impossible
Evan MacDonald
Evan MacDonald - 7 years ago
Hi Terry. This is the real deal! Could a drone this size pull someone out of the water in a sitting position like in wakeboarding or waterskiing? No chance. But with a little running start, the ALTA can propel someone forward on a board that skims across the surface. 100% real. No special effects.

Eugene Epifanov

Extra altitude for safety for the multirotor and a long cord also reduced required reaction time for both the multirotor and the boarder.

I'm sceptical, too. It's an Alta 6 drone ($12.000) with 2,1 kW power, but I don't know if this is enough to move a person on water. Maybe its a custom-build model with more power.
On the other hand: what would be the alternative?
Lukey Firsty

How do people get to post with copyright music and not royalty free music?
mooosestang

To answer your question, i post lots of videos with copyrighted music and it gets monetized by the copyright holder, not me. It may very well depend on the country you live in, but i've never had a video that was pulled due to copyrighted music.

Total BS, wold record for drone payload was set by Engineers from the University of Oslo, 61kg for 37sec. the guy surfing looks about 175 pounds. thats 80kg, and this is way longer that 37 seconds, plus the record drone Had 8 drones tethered together for lift. this is BS! nice vid, but BS. http://www.industrytap.com/drone-sets-world-record-heaviest-payload-lifted-remote-controlled-multicopter/34104

I'm not sure I get it. Why would they "fake" this? What would they have to gain?
I"m no expert at all but the surfer is not being lifted, he is being towed. I can't lift my 1.63 tonne car, but with a bit of momentum I can keep pushing it for a while. It's a shit car so I frequently push it.

+kmehrkens Yeah - its not that i doubt that it could be done, or that the drone could do it. I'm just on the fence about whether they actually did fly him or not.
kmehrkens
kmehrkens - 7 years ago
Absolutely real. Did you see the size of those motors? They are permanent magnet motors capable of bursts of power output that are much higher than their rated continuous output. Seriously, we have DIY, one-man helicopter builds and somehow people think that if it's a drone it's fake? The hardest part is making it work with electric motors due to costs of batteries. Motors not so much. Stuff is getting cheaper and cheaper, lighter and smaller though, and soon enough all this will be very real for everyone. Remember, higher RPMs only plays right into the hands of these drones. Higher the RPMs, more advantageous for the motor weight, which is better for flight. And with higher RPMs and higher voltage systems, less current draw on the battery pack, which is longer flight times. It's all real in my opinion.
VlogLikeNoOnesWatching
VlogLikeNoOnesWatching - 7 years ago
+kmehrkens what do you think of Caseys latest human flying drone? Do you think thats legit? I'm on the fence personally..
kmehrkens
kmehrkens - 7 years ago
Totally real. One, he's not an overweight guy. Two, he's on a wide wakesurf board to provide more bouncy than a pair of skis or even a wakeboard. Three he never does a start 'out of the whole' to bypass the hardest effort required by the drone- the deep water start. Four, his wide board also requires less velocity. Five and probably most important, the angle at which the rope pulls on him is very high, which produces vector forces in the Z (vertical) axis AND X (horizontal direction of riding) axis. This means that there's a component of the drone pull actually keeping/lifting him as he is pulled forward on the water. That requires even less velocity to keep him from sinking. If you've ever compared riding behind a boat with a cable park, you'll know exactly the concept. Totally real.

That short clip does not help your case imo. it just shows how quickly the the drone is overcome by the drag. Can a drone pull a guy on a skimboard for a short distance, sure, can it do some of these things shown in this pieced together video? No way.

Casey Van Nyhuis

I've worked in the drone industry for about 5 years now at some of the top companies. I can assure you this is possible and is in fact real. When a company lists maximum lifting capabilities it is for sustained use at a throttle level that allows room for error. Often times this can account for as much as 50% error so they can guarantee performance at max payloads in high winds. This is actually more comparable to pulling a person in a wagon then anything else...not a wakeboard. These are not designed for carving in water but more closely related to a surf board that is made for gliding across the top of the water. Trust me...you're really out of your element on this one. ;)

I'm on your side dude, I'm sure some of the shots are real, but then it just looks like the drone is pulling even thought he got all the inertia from pushing himself. But for example the shot at 0:23 does not seem feasable at all, espacially compared to the raw footage from their IG account.
bajou patterson
bajou patterson - 7 years ago
The friction coefficient would still be much lower than the force of gravity. It only needs to pull a fraction of his weight. Forward motion over a low friction surface requires much less energy than vertical flight.

cptnjarhead1 -Damon Hendrickson
cptnjarhead1 -Damon Hendrickson - 7 years ago
Look at the raw footage posted inside this thread. After a running start his inertia is gone, the load/drag increases beyond the drones pulling capacity, and he is dead in the water. Never takes off past the shore. Now, if they can show all the raw footage, i might change my assessment. but, even then, I would probably have to see it in person.

cptnjarhead1 -Damon Hendrickson
cptnjarhead1 -Damon Hendrickson - 7 years ago
The video you posted, is two men on an an inflatable towing raft. The raft does not need speed/force to keep it above the surface. Its a raft, made to hold a certain amount of load and stay above the surface. The "low friction" board will not stay above the surface with a human standing on it. Therefore you need force to keep it above the surface.

No way no how they are going to be able to pull anything above 20pounds. Its just not possible,
Johnathon Selstad
Johnathon Selstad - 7 years ago
They claim their drone can fly for ~8 minutes with a 20 pound payload: http://freeflysystems.com/alta-8/dependable

I could imagine this working at 20 pounds of force if they always gave it a running start.
cptnjarhead1 -Damon Hendrickson
cptnjarhead1 -Damon Hendrickson - 7 years ago
Lets say your correct, that drone looks to either be: Freefly Systems ALTA 8 - Max take off = 18kg for 10 min or the DJI S900 - Max take off = 8.2kg for 15min. So lets take the heaver of the two. 18kg = about 40pounds. Then you need to do the math for surface area, drag, and speed to keep the object above the surface. Its just not feasable.
Murat Odabasi
Murat Odabasi - 7 years ago
Forward flight requires less power than hovering. Or the drone will tow more weight in forward flight than it can carry hovering. Like double.

Re = P (density) x L (obstacle length) x V (flow speed) / v (viscosity or internal friction)
cptnjarhead1 -Damon Hendrickson
cptnjarhead1 -Damon Hendrickson - 7 years ago
Water equals friction/drag. The larger payload on drones/electric motors, the larger the battery needs to be, batteries are heavy, so this compounds the problem. The drones motors do not have enough force/lift to pull that much weight.

I absolutely agree. Anyone who has ever tried to water ski or wake board knows the strain this puts on one's arms. Freefly provides a hint that this is fake with their "Don't try this at home, folks." comment.
