Wonderful van, I seriously am looking for these LED Spotlights as seen in 10:41 (https://youtu.be/anzPk-m2Ek8?t=647). Can somebody point me out how they're called? I want to have the same in our bus with the light former.

Help me out here, why get a van with less amenities vs a small RV with twice the amenities? MPG is not a factor considering both are poor. And yes, RVs can also have solar panels inputted.

This is hands down my favorite van, very beautiful - not too much weight on the wheels, table and bed merging together is a wonderful idea too. You seem to be enjoying a lot and look very happy too. I think for 20k, this has definitely been worth the while, even if you had to spend another 10k, it's still worth it. We only live for 2-years (long story), you are living longer for sure and while young.

What a time we live in today, and what an amazing country NZ! Way back in 1981 two buddies and I traveled through Mexico by bus and it changed my life and we were only gone for just two weeks. Surfing is like nothing else on earth, it is a connection to the soul and that is why you see people like Johnny making his dreams come true. Like a older man once told me when I was living out of my truck traveling the USA, he said " if you wait til your older you wont be able to climb the mountains to see the views." As an artist I have never liked being tied down for to long it gets hard to find inspiration and before I get to old I may get me a bus and just take off and finish out our trip down along Mexico's Pacific coast we never made it to Escondido.

It's refreshing to see someone with a tangible job. So many of these tiny housers have some mysterious "home business" that they can apparently run from an iPhone. That said, it looks like Johnny meets fellow electricians at whatever job site, because he has no equipment whatsoever. And I guess he lives off canned food. Well OK. Absolutely magical. Well done Johnny and once again a terrific production Bryce. I’m a Dad with a wife and five kids. Not something I could do so I am very envious of this young mans freedom and autonomy. The van alone was a great find but to be able to have a job where you can pay for what you love to do.
So amazing to see young people finding alternate lifestyles that don’t involve huge amounts of debt.

You can buy what you need for ethanol production of the official web site of David Blume, author of 'Alcohol Is a Gas' and other producers of ethanol, shown on the You Tube documentary, 'Pump.' Try to copy what Brazil did with ethanol, to end all imports of gas and oil. 'Pump' shows how this created 30 million cleaner jobs for Brazil!!! All this should be translated into Portuguese and Spanish.
happy days
happy days - 6 years ago
Everyone should watch this video. It should be translated into every language. Try to get every van and tiny house to run on ethanol and denatured alcohol, wind turbine electricity (radio antennae), as well as solar panels. You could do this by getting every micro brewery, winery, canned food company, soda company to donate their 'waste' into the production of ethanol and denatured alcohol. What you don't use, you could sell as fundraisers, instead of the dangerous fireworks. Even in transit, and storage, fireworks can explode and bring down a freeway overpass or garage. The sale of fireworks makes billions for the far right who don't care at all about preserving nature. California has 15! major fires or firestorms right now. Even Yosemite is closed because the air quality is so bad. Ideally, all 7 billion people should own a van like this, to be able to leave a firestorm, (or other 'natural' disaster) and survive/thrive amap, as much as possible. All the charities are going to be overwhelmed by the thousands of people left homeless by these firestorms. Many people think they were caused by arsonists out to make millions by buying up the burned property to 'flip' and to 'flip' elections. Check out the magazine cover for Cal State East Bay, with the football field size lasers used at Lawerence Livermore Labs. They brag that the lasers can cause bombing the size of 1945's Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The BBC did a documentary showing how one tiny laser can start a wood match on fire. Maybe their needs to be security cameras at all entrances, etc. to catch wildfires early, and to hopefully prevent some arsonists who don't want to be shown on security cameras. You are in heaven in New Zealand. Be careful to not let it become like America! August 2, 2018

Hi Bryce, wow ... what a find! Johnny may have started out not really knowing what to do but that young man is a craftsman now. When you showed the pic of him in the empty van with insulation along the sides .. I was thinking, That's tiny! Isn't it strange how roomy it looks with everything in there after the build? It's so open ... roomy. Many many happy years to come for Johnny. Thanks for finding and sharing ... many new ideas in my head.

$20 000.00 is easier to pay off than $100 000.00. Seriously, in Ontario a small one bedroom condo can set you back over $100 000.00. Or even more! And it WON'T drive you to the good surf spots!
He has what he wants in his van, he can get to work or to the beach. He works when HE wants to work. I'm seeing very little stress here.

+David Ackerman ... may be true but you can easily save or earn millions in 20 years when you have excessive funds to invest. So, payoff a 20k van in a year or two and save 100% of your income or spend 30-50% of it on a mortgage (not including prop tax and maintenance) and hope you maybe earned 10-100k in equity? So now what?

Mavericks. Living to surf in Half Moon Bay California, being just coastal of Silicon Valley, you couldn't buy a place there to live for under US$800k. Rent in the region isn't any lower than like US$3000/month. Usually it's several people to an apartment, just so they can afford to even have shelter at all.

people dont realize that a custom built van like this would actually increase its value by at least double, most people don't know how to put together a full functioning van with electric, plumbing, solar, woodwork, that labor is valuable. Custom van builders would start at $70k and up, doing it on you're own is a fraction of that price.

Yeah but there's also condo fees, city taxes, condo fees, etc. PLUS : the difference between van payments and mortgage he can still be put in investments. Also, you might be needing a car $ with your condo. Finally, I'm sure the utility payments on his van (essentially fuel & propane) are less than in a condo.

exactly this is how life was meant to be lived, not stuck in some office 9-5 for 40 years till you hit your pension. Building my van in a few months and will tour the states full time

He clearly doesn't care about something like this based on his interview. Just because you do, doesn't mean someone else should. He's perfectly content living the way he chooses. As are most people I've found who choose this lifestyle and really embrace it. Why mention this? It seems to serve no purpose in context.

There's something to be said for fulfillment: For the next 20 years he gets to surf daily and experience all of it while he's healthy and able. Having a stick-and-brick home might appreciate over time, but no one is guarenteed that time. Who's to say he'll be alive in 20 years to "capitalize" on that house investment? I've had four friends die before the age of 30-- We're not promised anything. Do what makes you the most fulfilled.
(And he'll make money working now and can save it all without a mortgage or rent. Suppose mortgage is $1200- He saves that monthly for 20 years = $288,000. If invested in a Roth IRA or something, then you'd really be set for retirement).
josh foster
josh foster - 6 years ago
Good point! However, to counter, investing the 80k minimum that he saves between the 2 housing solutions (not to mention savings on living expenses) will certainly put him even farther ahead than paying into a mortgage!

Very nice van conversion, Bryce next time you talk to a van life convert could you ask them how much a change they have seen in their gas mileage? Vans generally are built to haul to an extent but I've always been curious how much of a damper all the extra weight puts on it's distance output

why is it that some people need to tint their windows or have like super thick curtains to completely close off their van because otherwise they'd get problems with cops etc and other don't? does it depend on the setup or the country?

When I was in NZ I saw a car with the key in the lock and open windows on the side of a road with not anybody in sight and it was a car from a local. I always felt that it is just very safe in NZ and that is not that much need for security, to be honest. That being said, doesn't a van have a lock? How is that not safe enough?
