IF that was a shark, 9:35 which by all accounts is likely, it was headed on a direct path towards JJF just at the apex of him entering the barrel. Thankfully the creature didn't try to take a bite, maybe couldn't quite identify JJ as a potential seal-snack. There's a preview scene in the new Jurassic World movie of a Mosasaurus attacking a lineup of surfers out at some big wave spot that looks eerily similar.

Good to see JJ back in some form, that will reset his confidence. Looked like a dolphin to me, they always ride waves like that, never seen a shark ride a wave like dolphins do., They had seen dolphins all morning and made comments about them earlier in the day.

The tail is moving side to side not up and down! It was a shark. I surf with juvenille great whites almost every session where I live! I have become an expert on what they look like under water.
