It is the natural submarine canyon in Nazaré Portugal. Those waves are permanently big.

Great movie in which I'm pretty sure Lori Pettys character states "big wave riding is for macho assholes with a death wish" and Patrick goes out into the huge swell at the end knowing full well he's going to die.
I understand fully everyone lives their own lives and people get their thrills in different ways, this just smacks a little of lunacy because there ARE SO MANY uncontrollable variables that could lead to you having thousands of tons of water coming down on top of you. You really are playing with monsters.
Hats off to them tho, this is courage (wrapped in a large dose of insanity) that most could never understand.
