only thing I like about charging big days at the wedge in socal.. its either you're going to break a bone/paralyzed, but no drowning chance really.. wedge in california I think is the safest place to take off on really big waves.. when it gets over 12ft at wedge it breaks in about 8ft deep water with sand bottom - not nearly as scary as 8 foot pipe over a reef... i never get used to riding anything bigger than 6 over a reef... its always fear in the back of my mind...great video though... that shipsterns wipe was mental.

I had this wipeout in Cloud9. My board stuck between my legs. It hit me right there. So painful that i cant hold my breath anymore. And theres a set of waves coming. The third and biggest wave almost toke my life. I had this final surface and one last breath. Still lucky. Lesson learned. Never understimate the power of waves. One Love!

I'm skateboarder. Unfortunately I don't live near any ocean to surf. My question is; why don't surfers wear a small oxygen tank in a pocket? Sorry if this question and idea sounds stupid. I'm just trying to better prepare myself for when I do get to go surfing someday. Not that I will be dropping in on any walls like these.
AJ G
AJ G - 6 years ago
Because 1, Try skating with a bulky metalic object if your pocket, its uncomfortable and it weighs you down. 2, even IF you had some sort of oxygen tank you wouldnt be able to grab it. No matter how strong you are you have pretty close to zero control over your body when youve wiped out. Youre at the mercy of the wave, and if it holds you down there is nothing you can do exept relax and hold your breath.
Pete Pompies
Pete Pompies - 8 years ago
Things happen so quickly and violently that trying to get hold of the canister would be futile. You have no control over your thoughts, let alone your limbs. These people train, learning how to hold their breath without bursting their lungs, how to relax so the body uses less oxygen, and how not to panic. These days the big wave surfers have safety vests that can inflate when you pull a cord to help them float to the surface quicker, and you'll see most surfers now pull the cord, or get a hand on it, just before being hit by the whitewater, because they know that the carnage that's about to ensue may leave them unable to find or pull the cord. Check out the recent event at Pe'ahi on the 'world surf league' website for examples.
Joseph Izzo
Joseph Izzo - 8 years ago
+G.B.C. in addition to lorood's comments. the oxygen would be torn off and create more damage than help
Lor00D
Lor00D - 9 years ago
+Kūpara Most of the time its not the oxygen supply that they are worried about, its more about the ocean floor/reef below. Its a part of the thrill! Some skateboarders don't even wear shoes or t-shirts, so its like me asking you why a skate boarder doesn't wear a carbon fibre exoskeletal body suit so you never smash your nuts on a rail or get hurt when you land on the concrete. imagine how different the sport would be, it would kinda suck but also be awesome..
If you can skate you are probably fit and can take a beating, you will do just fine ;)

I had a wipeout on a ~5ft wave when I was a kid that made me lose my sense of direction of up and down for about 5 seconds, which felt like an eternity at the time, and since then gained a very serious respect for the power of the ocean.  I can't even begin to imagine what this stuff might feel like.

I got pitched at pretty big west swell sunset and landed right on my back and it knocked the breath out of me. then the whole ocean came down on top of me. got fucking worked through the impact zone over by boneyards. finally made it to shore and laid on the beach breathing for an hour. respect the ocean, and mother nature, or she'll snatch you in the wink of a pretty girls eye.

That's no joke! I rode one of the biggest waves I've ever ridden in Costa Rica. And got worked, in comparison to the waves in the video I rode a tiny wave. But getting the air knocked out of you, or swallowing water and being stuck in the impact zone is scary as hell!

If your wiping out, face your butt to the water, acts like a cushion, make your body relaxed and spread your body out. Stay calm, once you start panicking you lose your breathe. Ik I'm just 15, but i've been surfing spots like pipeline, sandys, and makapuu for years.

depends, Teahupoo breaks on a reef, as the wave rolls in in goes from 20 ft deep to about 5 feet deep where it breaks, where as Mavericks, waves travel from Alaska to Half moon bay, bringing twice the wave mass and power, some surfers have been pushed all the way to the floor there, which is about 40 ft deep.

@Peter94686.- Hilarious spills? You obviously have never surfed mate. Even a 3ft grungy wave can work someone ove. My limit was about 12 ft, and that was scary. But Shipsterns, Teahupou,. Mavericks, etc. That's life and death! Fun to some but even Kelly Slater said " Anyone who isn't scared of teahpou at 8ft is crazy".
I had my steamer stipped of me at 10 ft 'Caves' at Cactus. It didn't worry me, but no way would i have the balls to surf these Death waves. Fun for me is 6-8 ft. Fun to others is mental. Glad to watch though.

its not that the water 'knocks it out of them' if anything it would just knock out carbon dioxide. just when you panic all of your muscles 'eat up' all of the oxygen in your lungs. But you are also right in the fact that the pressure acting on their body would cause their muscles to tense up and hence same process. Thats why they all say they just try and relax.

These guys can all hold there breaths for 4-5 minutes plus. Just when the force impacts your stomach and knocks the wind out of you as your gasping for that calm cool breath, thats what causes the deaths. That and entrapment under water. But these big wave surfers are so fit, show no panic and hold there breaths so long.

Begs the question: why? Here's a possible answer: We've proved that time is relative. I think that those 10-15 seconds in the falls must feel like decades. So maybe these guys have figured out how to prolong their life by almost killing themselves? Impressive, but still not for me. Great vids.

flakoman27 you do have to relax. It saves oxygen. You could be held under for minutes at a time, you need every bit of oxygen you can get, and panic/movement wastes oxygen and energy.
