I seriously am having trouble catching any wave with an 8ft soft board. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I keep nose diving or when I do "catch" a wave I feel like it's crashing on me and it does not allow to even try and pop up. So frustrating.

Go back to white water take offs to build confidence and work on back extension muscles activate them whilst paddling in!

Timing is key. practice catching a wave without paddling. By using the upward momentum of the wave. This will help you create more speed when you do catch it. Sit in the impact zone and take a few on the head to learn this lesson. Then you can create speed from the waves momentum

Hi Kale. I’m Ming, a rookie surfer from Taiwan (hope you know where Taiwan is. )
Firstly, my English is so poor hope you can understand what I like to say.
I love your video so much and I think this video is one of the best surfing videos on YouTube.
Could you please let me put some Chinese subtitle on your video, cus I really hope to share this video with those surfers who can’t speak English.
Maybe the process of translation will take me lots of time. But I will do my best. And I’m appreciated you can grant my request.
Best regards
.

Terrific stuff, lads. I am a recent subscriber so you might have some videos already on this. When on a board, the surfer sees that view, not the view from the beach which tends to make it look easy and also seems to make the waves look smaller. Do you have any lessons from the surfer's view to show how it is on catch and pop up? Glad I found you!

Been surfing for 20 years, randomly discovered your video today; good stuff! I used to watch and re-watch Kelly Slater's pop up on the rogue wave he finds in September Sessions (Mentawai's). Your footage is far more realistic and easier to digest than the best surfer in history popping up over an exposed reef! Just subscribed, keep 'em coming!

It's amazing how much looking down the line affects whether you catch or don't catch a wave. I always used to look straight ahead while paddling at an angle and often either end up spinning straight off while popping up, or going straight ahead and completely missing the wave. As soon as I started looking down the line, everything fell into place - that natural inclination to push down on the inside rail to turn the board across the wave face came naturally, and because my head was facing in the direction the board was moving, my body ended up in the correct orientation without spinning off because my head was going in one direction and the board the other.
Tips like those in this video save you a huge amount of time by pointing out things you probably wouldn't normally think of, and have a huge impact on whether you're successful or not.

Hi kales, i have notice that in some cases you put your chest and head down near the surface of the board...do you need to do this in steeper waves??thanks

This is to propel my weight forward to ensure I catch the wave :) and then I proceed through the normal take off motion :)

Hi Kales, thanks for the very informative videos. Sometimes when I catch the wave and I'm still lying on the board, I find it difficult to actually pop up as I feel sort of "locked" there, in that lying position. By the time I overcome this and do pop up, it is pretty much too late to properly position myself on the wave. Any ideas how I may overcome this "hesitation" to pop up? Thanks in advance for your reply.

Practice practice practice. Could also be core weakness. An inherant sense the body might have to protect the spine by telling you not to get into that vulnerable position. So, on land core training (Swiss ball is great) and practice practice practice in the water. Also consider a BIG board to make it easy

so am i just seeing things or when you pop up do you keep your back knee tucked till your front leg gets up? you mentioned it and said it was unstable but it looks like you just do it faster but its still there. just wondering :)

It’s low and off the board still :) but yes in smaller waves I tend to do that - when it’s big and powerful I don’t.

Mate, i run surf schools in the States, and was watching your entire vid to see how you go about explaining how to generate speed/pumping.. I felt like i never got your take on it for the most part. Just my thoughts. Love what your doing, just thought id chime in as a fellow surf instructor. Let me know if that makes any sense. all good. good on ya

Take off and generate speed moreso looking at how the two link together hence the emphasis on the ‘look’ and the initial movement up or down the wave accordingly. Generating speed once already up would probably be a video of its own and indeed we’ve covered it a lot in both our major videos.

As a begginer im always in doubt if i should pop up with my hands on the board or grabbing the rails, when I stoped grabing the rails i realised that i pop up better. But looking to the pros videos I realise that the most of them grab it so... what is you recommendation about that. Cheers! Great channel.

Thanks for answering!! Which one is suppose to be grabbing? The clossest one to the wall? And any explanation for that?. I use to grab rail unconscienous when i go left but on the deck when I go right... cheers!!!

Often it’s only one of their hands which grabs and the other is planted on the deck. I still think the majority of the hand should be on the deck

Nice breakdown. One thing that I struggle with is taking my eyes off the nose of my board as I'm taking off. Just looking down the line as you pop up sounds so simple, but I find it incredibly hard to do, without that initial peek at the nose of the board. Is it just practise practise practise or do you have any hints to stop this habit ? Cheers.

what do you recommend for taking off in waves that break somewhat unpredictably. ie my local beach break. some crash and close, some are mushy, others are just right and the difference in appearance is subtle it's hard to read which is which.

I was finally able to pump and gain speed on a wave the other day after years of trying and hours of YouTube. What a feeling!! The wave I surf is a really fast reef break and I found that on a lot of my takeoffs I was just going straight to the bottom of the wave and losing all my speed. I had to angle the takeoff and stay high from the start. Keep at it! The feeling is really worth the effort! Thanks for the great videos.
