How To Surf Small Waves | And Why You Should Do It More!

How to surf small waves really well. It's a difficult area of surfing because many people don't want to do it, however I think that it's imperative for your surfing progression. If we look at surfers such as Kelly Slater, Filipe Toledo & Julian Wilson, we find that they all grew up in small waves and yet are some of the best surfers on the plant (even in big waves!). Of course, there are surfers who come from Hawaii or Portugal where solid waves are the norm rather than the exception, but this small-wave originating surfer phenomenon is impossible to ignore. In this video I chat about some important factors which will help you to surf better in small waves and also recognise how great surfers apply these techniques. So True! Had my second 'Eureka moment' of surfing just the other day! (First was a feind 'pushed' me onto a green wave and I caught it-super awesome, thanks Lee!) Surfing, surfing, every time maybe catching a few waves, more or less, maybe not.... True I took surfing up the year I was waiting for a double hip replacement and by this session, (Glory be to God, or more rightly the surgeon)-I could finally achieve a squat position, so grateful !Anyway, the surf was small and it was an unbelievably beautiful day AND I was the ONLY surfer out- not a single other surfer entire sessions, and only three or four momentary very momentary swimmers-due to it being winter here...anyway...the waves were that ideal 'smallness' for a beginner, yet with jutst enough power-about 2-3 foot and my God, it gives me a real buzz just to think of it now; I caught EVERY SINGLE WAVE that I went for! Every single one! It did take my news hips fully 'rehabbed,' Ok, OK! It did also however, take enough 'wave reading experience'...I did 'turn down' several approaches and take off's to several waves..earlier in my surfing carer, maybe I would have tried and 'failed'...yet if you think realistically, it isn't really 'failure' rather, it is learning, until the day everything, your body-mind-heart-spirit click with conditions and experiences-understanding and you finally get that 'Eureka Moment' with an art, such as I enjoyed just the other day...the real 'icing on the cake' of which was that I had a minute, initially maybe non-existent it seemed window of opportunity to execute it; I was on this day due on school pick-up for kids and only if I got to the beach extra-quick and everything went just better than you could expect normally, really I was pushing it just to get in the and straight out if that did happen!...and it was unexpectedly Fantastic! Fantastic! But why say this? Because if it had been six foot I very much doubt I would have caught half as many, who knows maybe on for two or three or even NO waves, especially since I have a significant rotator cuff injury now, dagnabbit, but not enough to stop me performing on small waves...on this day on every single beautiful one!
Thanks of the ACE surf vids Kale! Really enjoy them! Happy surfing everyone and remember save Nature, look after our Home Planet! Example; Pay your carbon off-sets of surf trips! Happy days!

Crazy gr8; more please on using SmoothStar (Carver, if you are USA - I don't see where you can buy SmoothStar in USA) tricks, tips but these next gen skateboards appear to have potential to teach riders how to pump, create speed and turn. And then - bit more on board tech; fish template, flat and volume; you just don't hear enough about it and these waves - they are the waves most surfers will actually see...! Nice job... (Edit just to say I'm not making distinction b/w SmoothStar and Carver or any other brand; this is an Aussie site - go AU all the way - and was only encouraging Kales to expound on his 'land based' techniques...)

Hey Ken. We send boards all over the world, its not an issue. We have over 100 coaches around the world using SmoothStar for coaching their students because it has the closest feel to surfing - there really is no comparison. When you do a turn, the board responds, there is no delay or stiffness. Also - when you put the board on rail, it will hold consistently. SmoothStar represents surf functionality not necessarily fashion under the arm - this is why How to Rip use it. If you got any specific questions just drop us an email.

I have a question, everybody is telling me to move forward on my board but when I get to that sweet spot I always nosedive no matter how hard I paddle. What else can I do? I'm sure my paddling is on point but when I see other surfers they don't paddle nearly half as me and still catch the wave. I've come to the point today where I just could not pull a strong paddle because I was so exhausted. Any tips? I weigh about 60kg and ride a 6'4, 36L
nick Verneck
nick Verneck - 5 years ago
Practice on a pool paddling while maintaining the nose of the board up. Or if you wanna be lazy keep the position you currently use but instead pull your legs in. This will shift the weight more towards the front and if you feel like you are nose diving you can just extend your legs and you will shift your weight back. Once you learn how to shift your weight back and forth catching waves becomes so much easier than sometimes you won’t even need to paddle. I have caught few waves without paddling just by shifting my weight on the right time to create momentum

To all you learners out there. This video is not for you. This video is for someone who has learn't to surf and who can ride bigger waves and shred but can't generate power in smaller surf. Please please please don't think that as a beginner you will be able to follow the advise on this video and suddenly be able to surf like this guy (bloody good surfer that he is). He started surfing and passed through exactly the same phase as you are at and it took him many many many more hours of surfing before he could do anything with the info he provides here.
What you need to do is get out there and surf. And then you need to get out there and surf. And then you need to get out there and....................surf.
What he is telling you is something that you will quite likely pick up as you go, if you mainly surf small waves, BUT there is no point in trying to put it into action while you are struggling to stand up and stay upright. Just get used to riding the board, have FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN.
Next, have FUN.
Eventually you may reach a point where you can shred in big waves but not in small waves, that is the point when this video may be of use to you.
In closing I'd like to say that surfing is in my opinion the greatest thing you can do for fun, every wave and day are different and I wish you the same amount of stoke that I have had over the years doing it!.

One of the best surf vids I've seen. Thanks!
Would love to see a video on catching more waves and not getting caught in the lip. I just learned from a friend that it helps to push the front of the board down into the wave as you catch it by pressing your chin to the board.
Colin Bovet
Colin Bovet - 5 years ago
+Kales Broccoli Thanks, that makes sense - I think it's a helpful way to think about leaning that far forward even if you don't put your chin on the board
Nunchuk For Grandma
Nunchuk For Grandma - 5 years ago
+Kales Broccoli Yeah its not necessary for learning to surf, but definitely helps in heavy barrels. Maybe not so much in 1-2ft slop. You're right tho, not so much chin more just being as low to your board as possible.
Kales Broccoli
Kales Broccoli - 5 years ago
It’s not really to do with the chin it’s the forward weight of the upper torso which helps catch the wave
Colin Bovet
Colin Bovet - 5 years ago
Nunchuk For Grandma ha yes, meant chin.
Nunchuk For Grandma
Nunchuk For Grandma - 5 years ago
He probably ment your chin. If your forehead was on the board you wouldnt be able to see. As for getting caught in the lip, it sounds like you need to get to your feet earlier before the wave starts breaking. Which means you need to work on your paddle power and your drop-in (pop-up), i'd recommend doing push ups. The last 3 or 4 paddles you do should be your deepest and hardest which is when your chin will be touching your board.

Something to maybe cover in future videos. I was surprised how quickly I was able to progress my surfing as I started doing yoga. Hip flexibility is the king. I guess it is what you don’t realise is even a problem if you surf since being a kid. But when you start in your late 20s it becomes a huge issue (after all the years of sitting 9-to-5).

Question: Your recommendations about volume... I am confused, it seems low. Small and somewhat weak waves I would go for 33-36L board.. I consider myself intermediate and weigh "only" 65kg - maybe the thick 7mm winter wetsuit that we need here in Denmark adds 4-5kg, but still..
Bradley Naughton
Bradley Naughton - 5 years ago
It's good that such low volume boards are recommended. The end result is that half the people in the water can't catch waves. More waves for the people who know what volume they should be riding!

Sick boys! When you're flying down the line trying to build speed, whats your weight distribution between your front and back leg? Are you putting more than 50% on your front leg to drive you down the line? I feel like on a skateboard it doesn't matter too much its more about the craving to generate speed. But I've seen clips of john john flying down the wave where it looks like he's almost putting no weight on his back foot at all?

Another pearler. I would love to see a more detailed breakdown of the progression from going straight, to using your feet/toes to trim the wave. Just basic trimming
AvocaFC247
AvocaFC247 - 5 years ago
My wife has the same issue. Currently getting a board to help her with that. It helps if the board is not too wide... and some sort of V or round V in the tail (even in a double concave helps or forces her onto rail).

Getting her take off at the angle right is important as she can trim immediately. The best angle varies from steep waves to flat waves (check the angles of better surfers who are out there with you)... and also varies with the tail rocker of the board.

Then I've got her to use the smoothstar in the bottom 1-2' of a skateboard bowl. The smoothstar has been awesome for all of us too.

Amazing breakdown, advice and visuals guys. Our customers ask for this sort of thing all the time so well done - you guys nailed it especially about weight and board size. The one element that would be great to cover in a video is how taller surfers should ride small waves. The distance of a pop up and the immediate acceleration is longer (more time required) for a taller surfer than a shorter surfer. We know there are lots of taller surfers out there that really, really struggle in small waves. Some pointers on this would be epic to help improve surfing technique. But hey... great job guys. Well done.
Nunchuk For Grandma
Nunchuk For Grandma - 5 years ago
+SmoothStarSurf what your'e talking about is absolutely pointless in surfing and there is no difference in method whether youre taller or shorter.
Mathieu Revel
Mathieu Revel - 5 years ago
I d say however that it might be easier to surf when you are short because of low center of gravity, for tall guys it comes down again to this flexibility issue to make it up. Yoga and daily stretching, tissue release with foam roller, spiked balls, loosing up the lower body is key. My 2cents
Mathieu Revel
Mathieu Revel - 5 years ago
I still dont get it lol but that s fine. It s more about how quick you are to get to your feet, some shorter guys are slower than taller guys to get to their feet. I think you just need to be fit enough to get quickly to your feet AND landing your feet in the right spot to maximise weight distribution. Unfortunately for taller guys I think our challenge (at least it was mine when i started to surf) is hip flexibility, being able to land your front foot between your arms. I understand your point but I d disagree that this tiny difference is the reason why taller surfers are struggling in small waves. +SmoothStarSurf
SmoothStarSurf
SmoothStarSurf - 5 years ago
+Mathieu Revel Hey Mathieu - the video title is called "how to surf small waves". The reference was particularly in popping up first - there is more distance for taller surfers from paddling onto a wave to getting to your feet. We are not talking about generation of speed - its the bit before that.
Mathieu Revel
Mathieu Revel - 5 years ago
Not sure I understand why a taller surfer would have more trouble generating speed than a shorter guy ? how is this related ? ( im 6'2 so i m interested)
