How The Right Almost Killed This Local Hellman With a 3-Wave Beatdown | SURFER Magazine

Western Australia’s infamous slab, The Right, did its strangely beautiful-yet-terrifying dance last weekend, which allured a crew of slab-hunting madmen to tango with the heavy, shape-shifting beast. Among the chargers were Bradley Norris and Jake Osman, who decided to whip into one of the session’s larger waves as doubles-Osman out front, Norris deep with a housed camera. One second Norris was behind Osman, snapping photos of the amazing view inside the tube, with a wide-open exit for both in sight. The next he was bucked from his board and slammed straight into the bottom -where he was held for two more waves before resurfacing, nearly dead. Norris gave a play-by-play of his harrowing wipeout on The Grin Reapers Podcast, which serves as the audio to the footage of the incident above.

Zack Kay and sV3Z1, I think those small cannisters are available, strapped to the front of your vest. As you say you can't hold your breath but it must give the surfer a certian amount of breaths. I have only seen photos of them, I don't know if they are widely used, mabye they are dangerous.

Big wave surfers need to start doing some deadlifts to deal with the pressure of the impacts they deal with. Waves like this are too rare to train for using just surfing and cardio.
Goober tuber
Goober tuber - 6 years ago
Some big wave surfers do alot of underwater breath holding in pools, some have trained to hold their breath for up to 5 mins in a calm water, would be less being thrashed around in the ocean but enough to survive being dumped by waves this size with the equipement they use.

Why can't they attach a small pressurized air canister on their vests in case this happens, enough for two or three breaths, making it safer? Surely they've thought about it, would cost much, isn't heavy...etc. What are the problems with this idea?
T Stedman
T Stedman - 5 years ago
The big risk is fucking around with air cannisters and trying to breathe and then do a controlled ascent in the impact zone, the next bomb that breaks is going to try to kill you. You might be lucky enough to survive a few hundred tonnes of water trying to mash you into the reef once or twice but your luck will run out quickly!

Stewart Gartland
Stewart Gartland - 6 years ago
The big risk is air embolism. You take a slug of compressed air, hold your breath for even a second, the wave rolls you up into half the depth of water and you've got burst air sacs in your lungs and you're drowning in your own blood. If your lungs are full, you can get air embolism in 8 feet of water or even less! Too risky!

sV3Z1 theoretically (bear in mind I don’t understand the specifics of the device) there would be no danger of the bends providing the surfer in question looks upwards and breathes out continually as they come back up. oxygen expands as you ascend, but if you breath it out in time you’ll be fine as the other effects of the bends usually be an issue unless you go really deep.
shane brady
shane brady - 6 years ago
nathan megalegend...At 10 meters air inhaled from a cannister MUST be exhaled as you ascend! 10 meters is deep enough for the air inhaled from a cannister to over inflate your lungs and cause serious damage if you just hold it in!! Hey, i dive SCUBA as well as surf, believe me, i know, ive seen this happen to an idiot who got in trouble free diving and took a breath from a SCUBA divers spare reg then shot to the surface in a panic without exhaling! Here is an analogy. Ime diving at 10 meters, i take a breath of compressed air then exhale it into a balloon then let the balloon go. As it ascends the air in it expands as the pressure decreases till the balloon ruptures, just as your lungs could. Its more likely with lungs that you would get air diffusing into the blood by pressure causing AGE..Arterial gas Expansion. Leading to air bubbles that can go to the brain causing paralysis, brain damage and possibly death!!! A sever over inflation WOULD rupture the lungs just like the balloon!!10 meters is not deep but the pressure difference even at this depth is enough to be catastrophic! In WW2 guys free ascending from subs trapped on the ocean floor found this out the hard way. At great depth it is VERY difficult to exhale fast enough to stop this happening no matter how hard you are trying to blow air out!! Rate of ascent in this case must be controlled if you are going to make it safely to the surface. This is an entirely different condition to the "bends" which as mentioned by some is Nitrogen saturation that on rapid ascent causes nitrogen bubbles to diffuse out of the blood..QED:/

So many brainless answers:/ Of course you CAN have a mini cannister of air or oxygen as long as you have a regulator attached:/ These can be bought and are used sometimes while SCUBA diving in case of stupidly running out of air, or a problem with your primary gear. Military use them for bailing after Heli crashes. They have also been used by some big wave surfers:/ RESEARCH before making a dick of yourself with stupid answers:/ Check out the "Spare Air" model 170 with custom pouch that can be attached to wettie. 20 odd breaths! Of course some knowledge of SCUBA operation would be handy. In the event of a forced, RAPID ascent from 10 meters by wave forces [very rare] you need to exhale or yes, it would cause rapid expansion of air in the lungs. Certainly not for use by many commenting here, but a lifesaver in some big wave or any other long hold down circumstances, for those with a brain:/

There was a kneeboarder who surfed in my area and he had a custom vest with a small built-in air canister on his chest with a mouthpiece. Always thought it was funny since I'm in Cali where waves aren't like this but who knows maybe he had an ailment or something.

nathan megalegend

Zack Kay you can safely breathe air at 10m and bounce to the surface . 20 to 30m plus and its all about nitrogen saturation in your blood. More time= greater risk
nathan megalegend
nathan megalegend - 6 years ago
sV3Z1 bends is nitrogen saturation built up over time. When you ascend the bubbles of nitrogen expand too quickly if you do and damage your vessels

Imagine being 10m under water with a hose connected to the surface that you can breath through. Every time you try to suck air through the hose from the surface your diaphragm has to generate enough force to displace the same volume of water as the air you just pulled-in. However, because the pressure at the surface is much lower than the pressure at your depth, it's really difficult to do this (in fact I doubt you could at 10m). The way around this is of course to use pressurised air in canisters, which are at a high enough pressure to overcome the pressue of the water around you. The trouble is, as you come up to the surface the pressure acting on your body decreases, but the pressure of the air in your lungs, and oxygen in your blood-stream, doesn't. That means if you take a breath of pressurised air at 10m depth, and a wave scoops you up to the surface, the air in your lungs, and oxygen in your blood, will expand rapidly because of the reduced pressure. This can rupture/damage your lungs and cause air bubbles to form in your blood stream (called an embolism) which, if they reach your heart, can cause a heart attack, or a stroke if they reach your brain, and a whole range of other problems. Of course you can prevent these dangers when diving by ascending slowly. The trouble in surfing is that the wave is likely to throw you around a lot and take you from deep to shallow water really quickly, before you even have a chance to exhale. On top of that you're likely to be in panic and have been bashed around from the wave impact. I'd guess more people would be killed by pressurised air accidents than from actually drowning.

girabaldy tasty
girabaldy tasty - 6 years ago
+sV3Z1 idk exactly but it has to do with the pressure of the air. When you breathe the air from the surface and bring it down the air at the surface is at a different pressure than air you bring down with you. If you hold your breath while breathing air from a tank, and a wave or swell goes over your head the depth and water pressure changes causing the air in your lungs and blood to expand witch does something too you.
sV3Z1
sV3Z1 - 6 years ago
Cheers for the reply. Isn't the bends caused by rate of ascent, so if they took a few puffs of oxygen and took their time getting to the surface, and breathing out excess oxygen gradually they would be ok? Better than drowning. I am not a biologist-doctor-or diver-so if any biologist-doctor-divers out there, would be good to know!

Hell no, I don't like the feeling of a hold down on the ocean floor! That 3 wave hold down is damn terrifying when you hit bottom to not move forever in pitch black, when you're coming up to get held again right when you start to see some color in the water to get oriented upright, and almost back to the top when you start sucking in sea foam that's over your head... I quit, gave up on mine... The interval was shit.
Don't like to hear about it at all... Bad things come in 2s and hell is coming in 3s!
