How To Surf | Positioning To Catch & Surf More Waves EVERY TIME

In this video Kale teaches you how to position yourself in the ocean so that you can catch more waves in the surf. Positioning is something very difficult to teach because, in reality, it requires hours of time in the water analysing waves and learning about their habits and patterns. That being said though, we think we’ve done a fine job of getting you started on this journey or speeding up your progress at the very least. There are two major factors when it comes to analysing waves and positioning yourself accordingly in the surfing lineup. 1: the specific wave itself you want to catch AND 2: the spot you are surfing (the conditions on the day essentially). This is the most detailed guide on positioning in the surf that you'll find on the internet and we're proud to be sharing it with you. If you'd like to come and learn more from myself & Ryan personally, we encourage you to come to our surf retreat this year at Whale Beach in Sydney; Sydney's most uncrowded and pristine beach. Point break is much better to catch waves but beach break can be harder.
Even if you sit in breaking point, waves might close out.
Local shaper who living in northern beaches catches waves much more than others including myself.
He sit in bit close to the beach and aiming to catch smaller waves which have more space to turn.
Besides he can manage board choices and building for types of waves.
Paddling techniques are definitely necessary I guess.

+How to Rip Yes, I am "struggling" in the sense I'm trying hard, but have a way to go. Exactly the audience, I had assumed, the video was intended for. It had some tips, but hardly described a way to "Catch & Surf More Waves EVERY TIME."

Hi! I know its really not the done thing to name breaks on the internet, but im going to ask anyway. Im able to stand up and turn on my surfboard but i really need a wave long enough to practice on. Are there any mellow long reef/point breaks within 2 hours drive of sydney that you could recommend?

It's a great idea to show the same waves and rides from multiple perspectives! It's so easy to stand on the shore and pick out good waves and take off points, a lot harder to do when you're in the water amongst the waves. I think you should also do this for other tutorials.

Really great video! It really pulls together all the 'nuts and bolts' of getting to your feet. Trying to develop that awareness of what your environment is doing and responding to it. The part about 'mind-surfing' as your walking down the beach is bang on the money!

Great Video, really helpful!
This might be dumb question but what the heck...I recently started surfing, I've been doing it for 3 months and I'm completely hooked.
I started surfing on a soft-board, size 8.6', now, I have a transition board, Bic Malibu 7.9, at this point I'm still acquiring basic skills and confidence with each wave I catch.
looking forward, I can't imagine moving to a short board, it looks way to, well...short!
When I surf an 8.6' or a 7.9' my legs are on the board, because It's long enough, this helps me to pop up to a standing position, because I have a firm surface to leap off of (maybe this is a mistake....?) can you please demonstrate how to correctly position yourself and pop up on a short board?

I also pick landmarks on the beach/cliffs to help me stay in the best position consistently. Get in line with my landmark each time and I know I'm going to be pretty close to the best takeoff zone. I hope that helps.

Hi guys, thanks for posting this. I noticed you (Kale) starting from a point a little to the inside (beach side) of the spot, then calculating and paddling out a bit before turning around. This seems better to me than sitting too far out, and having to race in, only to miss the wave. Since you did this, I will also continue to do it this way.
Jim McCarley
Jim McCarley - 5 years ago
Thanks Kale. I understand about editing limits. You can't possibly cover everything. It's ok to generate ?? and interest. My wife does vid editing for horse sales. Just a 2 minute video takes at least 4, 5,  or even 6  hours to shoot, clip, add sound, polish, and upload.
Kales Broccoli
Kales Broccoli - 5 years ago
Jim McCarley yeah because it helps your positioning to always be facing the wave that you want to catch it allows for a better assessment of what’s going on. Almost could have mentioned it in the video but was getting too long

Amy, I am also at this stage.  I go to a beach break which is often too big for me. I have gone out a few times when the swell is smaller, and have found much more gentle waves. A slow, crumbly wave is much easier than the rapid forming giant walls that I often see there.
