Although I've been surfing since 1968 I still can learn from watching these videos. We didn't have any surfing schools back then, or even surfing coaches. I didn't have any friends who were experienced surfers to take me out and teach me things. Everything I learned was from trial and error. I had to learn things the hard way. Watching this video shows some of the mistakes I make even after 50 years of surfing!

I've been surfing for over 20 years off and on, but struggle with explaining how to do it to those new to it. This video is great at explaining the things I do without even thinking about it. One thing I would add is that the conditions make all the difference in the world on whether you have fun or struggle. Unfortunately when there are good conditions, everyone and their brother goes out. One other thing that I would have added is to immediately start your turn left or right as soon as you pop up and don't just ride the wave straight in. Also, most beginners struggle with paddling out, so I would have addressed that in the video.

Nice explanation. I'd only add please, beginner surfers, watch videos to learn what "dropping in" and "snaking" are. Dropping in causes collisions and can be dangerous. Learning to avoid this keeps everyone safe. Thanks!

Great video! Thank you. My local wave (Muizenberg, Cape Town) is weaker and more varied in breaking position. Often when you think you're too far out, you're perfect. When you think you're too far left, you're in the correct channel. I've been missing a lot of waves because of my head not being forward and my paddling not being strong enough. My positioning is much better but at high tide, the waves are stage A (lump) with them breaking far closer to the beach.

Glitzy Todd i think lots of beginners pop up too early and stall the board. I tell people to count a second or two after you catch the wave to build up board speed before you pop up. If you pop up early you stall and miss the wave. If you pop up late you still catch the wave, but you miss some of the ride but you at least catch the wave and next time you can adjust. Good luck

that too has been my problem too. i get the wave okay but then i do what planes sometimes have to do "pull up, pull up, pull up" and totally bail.
i think part of my problem is that i haven't got enough speed behind me and also my pop up is still a little erratic and at times i end up being left behind by the wave.
i ride a longboard 9ft6 (120kg or 264lbs with a lot of volume, but i have had to relearn the popup as i had originally learnt by using my knee. problem is, is when it's steep the knee is less-efficient.

Hey @commentoria, there is no shame with being paralyzed from fear looking at the drop beneath you.
That feeling is totally normal. Our advice is to start with smaller waves. The more you do it the more comfortable you will get and the more comfortable you will get slowly moving to bigger waves. Also, if you go for a wave, the more you commit to it, the better it will go. The hesitation is usually what leads to wipeouts.

i tried catching green waves for the first time during my last surf trip but what happens is i either 1. get sucked into the wave as it forms into a curl and no matter how hard i paddle i don't move forward (although i do catch the wave like this but it is rather confusing) or 2. the nose of my board does not stick out of the water and i "wipe out" although my surf instructor instructed me to push down on the tail of the board with my knees to keep the nose over the water but it's more easier said than done since it is nearly impossible to exert any force with my knees with me lying down, any tips?

you are right, i've actually noticed advanced surfers hardly even paddle but always seem to be able to catch a wave. one more thing though, the majority of the waves i caught were all due to me getting sucked into the wave as it begins to curl, i noticed i barely even tried to paddle but was able to catch those waves which was really weird. is that what you mean by timing? was that the perfect moment? and does getting sucked into the wave as it begins to form into a curl behind you how it's supposed to be? i'm really sorry for troubling with these questions

Hey @Alex, its hard to put the finger on exactly what it is that you could be doing wrong. But it seam like you might be catching the waves a bit too late, at stage C (see 0:25). This mistake is very common for surfers learning to catch their first unbroken waves. Try to focus on positioning yourself in a way that you are paddling on a wave that is transitioning from Stage A to Stage B (So that you end up catching it and popping up at stage B. It is important to always keep looking at the wave over you shoulder to know how to adapt your paddling to the wave. If it feels like the wave is forming faster than you were expecting, it is better to stop paddling for it to prevent ending up catching it at stage C. The timing is everything. Often beginner surfers feel like advanced surfers next to them seem to be catching waves without even paddling. That is because their timing is perfect, it allows them to take advantage of the wave's power, rather then paddling very strong. If your timing is good, your nose should never tend to dive. We hope this helps.
